Wozniacki to be Denmark's flag-bearer at Olympics in Rio

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Former top-ranked tennis player Caroline Wozniacki has been chosen to be Denmark's flag-bearer at the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Explaining its decision, the Danish Olympic committee says the 25-year-old Wozniacki is one of "most successful tennis players" of the past decade.

On Twitter, Wozniacki called it "a dream come true."

The national Olympic committee says Wozniacki is the 25th Dane to bear the flag at the Olympics and only the third woman.

Pellegrini selected as Italy's flagbearer for Rio Games

ROME (AP) — Swimming world-record holder Federica Pellegrini has been selected as Italy's flagbearer for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

The Italian Olympic Committee made the announcement Wednesday, which marks 100 days until the opening ceremony on Aug. 5 — a date that coincides with Pellegrini's 28th birthday.

Pellegrini set the world record in the 200-meter freestyle at the 2009 world championships in Rome.

She took gold in the 200 free at the 2008 Beijing Games and silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics as a 16-year-old

Pellegrini has also been on the medal stand in the 200 free at six consecutive worlds stretching back to the 2005 edition in Montreal.

Italy's most popular female athlete, Pellegrini will become the fifth woman flagbearer for Italy at the Summer Games.

Australia is slated to announce its flagbearer before the team leaves for Rio De Janeiro at a team function in breaking one of Australia's most famous sports tradition to avoid a Lauren Jackson in London 2012 scenario with her having to play basketball the next day after the Opening Ceremony

Luis Scola was selected to carry Argentina's flag as Team Argentina marches into Maracana Stadium. What will the Brazilian fans' reaction be when hated Argentina is announced? There will be some polite applause for sure. He's the second basketball player with this honor after Manu Ginobili in Beijing 2008 for Argentina:

I should really say the Australian Olympic Committee instead of just Australia on my last post

Also archer Zahra Nemati, the first Iranian women to win gold at either the Olympics or Paralympics, was selected as the Iranian flagbearer

Actually, just having been down there; the hated/heated rivalry is a little overblown. The 2 cultures are very complementary to each other. The Brazilian way of life is more easy going, the Argentine, more cosmopolitan. But both know that Brazil is the giant of the continent; and #2 Argentina keeps #1 on its toes. Loved Buenos Aires!! Rio was OK, but too muggy. Don't like muggy.

Must make a huge amount of difference what time of year you go. I was in Buenos Aires in a January, and it was unpleasantly hot and humid. Really yuckily so. Whereas in Santiago at the same time it was near perfect - warm days, cool nights - from its higher elevation in the Andes foothills.

I assume being a local "winter" games should make Rio more bearable than it is at other times of the year.

I live in BA and I can confirm, December-January-February is just unbeareable here. Horrendous humid heat that just makes you want to stay next to the air conditioner all day, every hour.

Limardo was Venezuela's ONLY medalist from London 2012. But he certianly made it count.

Malaysia could very well have its flag (the Jalur Gemilang) carried into the Opening Ceremony by badminton legend Chong Wei with diver Pandelela Rinong still in contention as the Olympic Council of Malaysia makes its decision Thursday
