zekekelso
I assume if you have 18 gold medals and you are competing in your 5th Olympics, you get to carry the US flag.

Not if your event is on the next day (and at 1AM to boot)....ala swimming at every Olympics. Probably the closing ceremony after his latest 'retirement'! Olympic Fan Darcy
Hahahahah Wozniacki one of the most successful tennis players of the last decade? I like her but all she'll be remembered by is getting to number 1 in the world without winning a slam.
gotosy
Pellegrini selected as Italy's flagbearer for Rio Games ROME (AP) — Swimming world-record holder Federica Pellegrini has been selected as Italy's flagbearer for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The Italian Olympic Committee made the announcement Wednesday, which marks 100 days until the opening ceremony on Aug. 5 — a date that coincides with Pellegrini's 28th birthday. Pellegrini set the world record in the 200-meter freestyle at the 2009 world championships in Rome. She took gold in the 200 free at the 2008 Beijing Games and silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics as a 16-year-old Pellegrini has also been on the medal stand in the 200 free at six consecutive worlds stretching back to the 2005 edition in Montreal. Durban Sandshark
Luis Scola was selected to carry Argentina's flag as Team Argentina marches into Maracana Stadium. What will the Brazilian fans' reaction be when hated Argentina is announced? There will be some polite applause for sure. He's the second basketball player with this honor after Manu Ginobili in Beijing 2008 for Argentina: http://www.coarg.org.ar/index.php/component/k2/item/2040-luis-scola-ser%C3%A1-el-abanderado-argentino-en-r%C3%ADo-2016 I should really say the Australian Olympic Committee instead of just Australia on my last post Also archer Zahra Nemati, the first Iranian women to win gold at either the Olympics or Paralympics, was selected as the Iranian flagbearer http://www.tasnimnews.com/en/news/2016/01/23/978587/zahra-nemati-named-iran-flagbearer-at-olympics

baron-pierreIV
What will the Brazilian fans' reaction be when hated Argentina is announced? Actually, just having been down there; the hated/heated rivalry is a little overblown. The 2 cultures are very complementary to each other. The Brazilian way of life is more easy going, the Argentine, more cosmopolitan. But both know that Brazil is the giant of the continent; and #2 Argentina keeps #1 on its toes. Loved Buenos Aires!! Rio was OK, but too muggy. Don't like muggy.

Must make a huge amount of difference what time of year you go. I was in Buenos Aires in a January, and it was unpleasantly hot and humid. Really yuckily so. Whereas in Santiago at the same time it was near perfect - warm days, cool nights - from its higher elevation in the Andes foothills. I assume being a local "winter" games should make Rio more bearable than it is at other times of the year.
