Rugby Sevens At The Rio Olympics

Recommended Posts

Little bit unsure when we got a yellow v NZ for shirt pulling, a Canadian nearly pulling a GB top off over her head is not a problem.

Whatever....best team won, can't really complain. But that was my first 'swear at the tele' moment during these Games.

Gold medal Australia 24 v New Zealand 17 Silver

Too slick, the reason they are number one ranked.

The niggly discipline issues of NZ showing through.

Overall a great future for Olympics Woman's Sevens with some teams really showing up 2020 as an even tougher event.

Feels like it's been in the Olympics for years. Such a good fit.

Yeah, the 7s format is like it was made for a major games tournament lie the Commies or Olys.

Nice breakfast timing for the kids now leaving to head off for school now. Probably a lot of kids now having just go bitten by the Olympic bug.

Fair enough cheering NZ Rob - I'll take it as a sign f the olde rivalry and respect :)

An inspired choice having sevens rugby in the Olympic Games. It is great that it is there and this will help grow the game globally.

Congrats Australia on the Gold and also to New Zealand and Canada for their silver and bronze medals!

Beautiful night at the Rugby stadium, but not even close to a sellout. People who were there did have a good time.

My first rugby match, and I loved the format... thought what's up with these loooong medal games, they should stick to the format. In an ADD world, there should be "sevens" versions of every sport. Strong cheering sections for both NZ and Australia. Canada was well. USA was there, put pretty week. The Australians managed to sneak in a few kangaroos. I thought the IOC was determined to put a stop to that. Many of the NZ women were crying after the match... but they still had to do this war dance thing. Seems like a fun thing after a win, not sure about after a loss.

Now its time for the mens competition and the question is can Fiji win their first ever olympic medal?

Eight teams are very serious contenders for the Gold.

As seen in the Women's Tournament, all teams will have to be on their top game. No room for error or a blink in discipline.

Sevens fits in nicely for the first week events...Unlike most sports outside the pool that are building up to medals...Sevens has instant sudden death excitement.

Men's rugby sevens has begun!!! Yay!!!

Man Spanish team has been destroyed by South Africa, and they got pissed about it to. Towards the end Kyle Brown was holding onto one of the Spanish player's legs after the ball has been passed. The Spanish player slapped Brown on the back of his head, hard too lol

And right before the last try when the Spanish player tackled Cecil Afrika getting into the goal(?) it looked like he hit him right in the balls lol and you saw the look of pain on Cecil's face. He almost lost possession of the ball too.

Wow the Kiwis just let Japan make the first try! For a team that is extremely dominant in this sport, that's kind of embarrassing!

Just noticed that Sonny Bill Williams made the cut. Hopefully for them that decision pays off. And my bearded beast DJ Forbes is back yay!

New Zealand just got SHAT ON

by Japan...

Japan 14 - NZ 12

Sonny Bill Williams typical show pony going off injured... And probably home.

If Kenya beat them later today...they gone!

NZ v Kenya

Biting nails at the moment

Half time NZ 14 - Kenya 5

Still a very rattled NZ.

Second half.

A better half as NZ settles and pulls away...at last.

Full time and phew...

NZ 28 - Kenya 5

Move to second in Pool C for the day.

Japan have really stepped up with a win against New Zealand and also running Great Britain close! New Zealand were better against Kenya but will really need to step up tomorrow if they want to progress. Lets hope they have had their bogey game of the tournament. I also see Argentina ran Fiji close in the final game. This competition really is wide open.

And in another upset, the USA lost to Argentina. What a shame, but did you see all the sexy Argentines on that team? Dear god are they built!

The Americans losing to Argentina is not an upset. Argentina is one of the top rugby nations in the world. In 7's it is more evenly matched, but Argentina has a stronger history and pedigree overall.

New Zealand Mens is out of the Medals finals after an utterly miserable campaign...

Beaten by GB 21-19 in its final pool play...but getting through to the quarter Finals as the best 3rd Place pools team on points...with help from Fiji winning in their pool.

And then getting bejesus smashed out of them by Fiji 12-7.

Well done Fiji.
