Hello everyone. Long-time, no see. So, with a year out until the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Do you think that Japan and Tokyo will reference or present their unique anime and video game culture, i.e Sonic, Mario, Pokemon, Studio Ghibli etc.?

They have to talk Japan's history from the Paleolithic era to the Jomon era to the Reiwa era.

Opening performance of the One Year to Go events a couple of weeks ago. Panasonic implemented some kind of new mapping/projection techniques which actually looked pretty amazing. Is this a sneak peak of what await us in 2020?

Tokyo should put on a fantastic Opening Ceremony on 24 July 2020

Opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup. Probably a different team that the one in charge next year, but for being a simple ceremony it was actually nicely done (focused mostly on japanese folklore this time). It's a shame FIFA ceremonies are in such an embarassing absolute state the Rugby ones are doing a better job these last years.

Interesting revelation about the Opening Ceremony for Tokyo..

Olympic Opening Ceremony Parade of Nations order changed slightly

The refugee team will enter 2nd, right after Greece (as opposed to Rio where they were 2nd to last, before Brazil).  And future hosts will be moved to the end of the order.  That's a huge win for NBC.  Remember they had lobbied to get the order changed in 2016 so that the United States would march later and theoretically would keep people tuned in longer

Great change. Three huge television markets all the through the end. Not sure where the USA and France would've been if it had stuck with the Japanese alphabet but this is a change I can get behind. Hopefully it follows through to Beijing as well, with Italy before China at the end.

According to Wikipedia, for the 1998 Opening Ceremony in Nagano, they used the English alphabet to determine the order.  Not sure what they are planning on doing this time around.

with this new change to the parade I wonder if NBC will finally broadcast the ceremonies live or they broadcast it live NBCSN and do a primetime replay on NBC just like the Canadians do on CBC

I doubt it makes a difference.  Presumably, it will be the same formula as PyeongChang.. they'll stream the ceremony live, no live TV broadcast.  And it'll be in primetime as usual on NBC.  And I am perfectly fine with that

The only bad thing about that is that I have to say off of social media and here all day - can't risk any spoilers! :D Depending on what my shift is that day, I'll watch whichever one I'm not working for, because I leave for Tokyo the next day, so I may be working double shifts or whatnot. But, I remember during Pyeongchang having to not check my phone all day, and that was hard, because I was so excited

Who's going to Tokyo 2020 and is there going to be a Gamesbids meet up?  I'm trying to finalize my plans now.

I am going, but I have not heard about a Gamesbids meet-up. I would maybe ask this under the Tickets and Travel forum, or maybe create a new thread? I don't think that would've been planned in the thread about the Tokyo Ceremonies, but I could be wrong

I like this change.  Approve it.  The only really big change for it would be in Paris 2024 when the US would normally march in early in the "E"s, but then will just be before the French team.

Big, important reveals for the Opening Ceremony, which appropiately have come up now that we've arrived to the olympic year.

Anime will play a big role in the opening ceremony, as famous characters will make an appearance delivering a message for peace. Also, origami doves and an hydrogen Cauldron (the later which was already somewhat confirmed a couple of months ago) are revealed to be part of the program.

Seems they know how well the handover segment was liked and are not going to try being subtle anymore, going all out for what Japan is known for around the globe. I bet everything Doraemon will take a leading role in the ceremony.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic opening ceremony to be character-driven appeal for peace

TOKYO

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony will employ characters from Japan's world-famous animation industry as part of its international appeal for peace, games sources told Kyodo News on Tuesday.

The ceremony's theme will be coexistence among diverse races across the globe with animated characters delivering the powerful message of peace through sport in a way that is easily accessible.

One idea being considered is for rival characters to shake hands while calling for an Olympic cease-fire during the games. In keeping with recent custom, Japan proposed a resolution at the United Nations in December for an Olympic truce that was adopted unanimously.

In 2016, iconic Japanese animation characters such as the robotic cat Doraemon, legendary soccer player Captain Tsubasa and Hello Kitty took part in the handover portion of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics closing ceremony. Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe also played a role, making a dramatic entrance in the guise of Mario from the "Super Mario Bros." video game.

The sources said the game character might also take center stage during Tokyo's opening ceremony.

To be hosted in the newly built 60,000-seat National Stadium in Tokyo, the sources said papercraft doves, the bird of peace, could also be used to send out the message of peace to billions across the globe on one of the world's most-watched events.

The opening ceremony, which could involve people riding in flying cars, will also be a platform for Japanese technology. Hydrogen, a next-generation energy source, has been settled on as a fuel for the sphere-shaped Olympic cauldron.

One idea is to fuel the flame using hydrogen produced in a plant from Fukushima Prefecture, part of the area that was hit hard by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami and the subsequent nuclear disaster.

In a time when divisions along the lines of nationalism and the gap in wealth are becoming more acute around the world, the games organizers seek to emphasize peaceful coexistence as athletes from diverse backgrounds gather and compete.

Japan's history of individuals pitching in to overcome the adversities brought on by natural disasters is also being considered as a potential element in the opening ceremony.

Rather than four distinctly different events, the organizers envision the opening and closing ceremonies for both the Olympics and Paralympics as coordinated elements of a four-part series to be staged by Nomura Mansai, a performer in Japan's traditional Kyogen comic theater.

I had a good look at the official merch featuring characters, and I started to question if everything being used to highlight the pop culture is intended to have a worldwide appeal, or just things the Japanese will recognize while the rest of us are scratching our heads.

Considering its the olympics, makes sense they are going for mainstream things. Though there might also be some stuff only japanese will recognize as you said.

I'm also curious about what Mansai Nomura meant about the four ceremonies not being separated shows but having some form of connection between each other.

Also,  interested about the spherical cauldron as well. Not sure if the roof will be strong enough to hold it so my guess is they will put it in one of the tribunes. After all the plan seems to be to make another cauldron for the public just like in Rio 2016, and this seems to be the norm now.
