Half a year later and this is still painful to remember what could had been if not for Covid and massive disorganization/bureaucracy/sexism from the ceremonies team.

I guess it hurts more because most of us had a lot of expectations after the wonderful 2016 handover. If there is something I learned after 2021 was to never trust the overhype handovers cause because the final result can be very different.

I think even without Covid, given the other stuff which happened, the opening ceremony was always doomed to be a mess.

posting it here as this thread is a much better fit than the LA28 thread -

But the way that moment was presented, whether it was in memoriam to 1972 or WWII, etc, it was the format that the producer used that I went "WTF?!" about. Instead of the segment being moving or heartfelt, it struck me as odd or bizarre.

you didn't read the article, did you... what we saw is how Butō is performed...

"Common features of the art form include playful and grotesque imagery, taboo topics, extreme or absurd environments, and it is traditionally performed in white body makeup with slow hyper-controlled motion."

Its been almost a year and it still hurts. What could had been and was ruined because of bureaucracy, Cancel Culture and Dentsu messing around. The only positive is that it made me change my view toward Nagano ceremonies to a more positive one.

Condolences, Yuriko.  So that's another sad factoid to add to Tokyo 2020.  It was the only Games/country whose prime minister was in office when he participated in a performing capacity (the Closing at Rio) and then was assassinated afterwards.  He was a good man, was he?  :(

It's a little off topic, his national funeral(September 27th, at Nippon Budokan) is going to be conducted by Dentsu.Dentsu also took charge of  the funeral of Emperor Showa in late 80's. Tokyo 2020 started and ended with Dentsu.-_-
