Tokyo 2020 Ceremonies

I think the era of the mega Opening Ceremonies- Sydney/Athens/Beijing/London (and throw in Sochi) needs to be over anyway...they were getting way too big and expensive. Rio was just fine.....

Will just pretend Tokyo never happened.

But this is the opening of the greatest show on earth and a huge country promotion.

The mega opening ceremonies actually started in Moscow and were again excelled in Barcelona onwards.

I have faith LA 2028 will save us

And Italy in 2026.

Thank you Tokyo for doing what you could... Just wish there was a greater effort to include fun and happiness to lighten up the hearts of those of us who are in lockdown. Obviously, I'm not expecting the same energy as Rio 2016, but I think Tokyo could have been more creative. It doesn't look like they even tried. Rio will probably remain one of the most joyous and colourful Olympic games ever!

I call these the Emotional Games- highlighted by Biles and Osaka, but evident across the board, the athletes seemed to be  on the edge of tears as a difficult training, qualification and competing cycle came to its climax in Tokyo...so much physical and emotional suffering and hardship...so many hurdles and depravations....and thank goodness Tokyo was hosting. The Japanese did these Games with great expense, order and safety.

It matches the motto, "United In Emotion" too. It was a very emotional Games.

Well done to the people of Japan and Tokyo for trying their damn hardest to bring these Games to life despite this awful pandemic.

Hoping they can replicate that with the Paralympics.

Tomohiro Ishii from TBS is speaking to BBC Sport now.

Also the cauldron from the opening is back. The Fuji part where it sits has been shortened slightly.

I can expect the bigger Fuji mountain to back for the Paralympic ceremony. Or the shorter one will probably stay but modified slightly to help with those on wheelchairs (if the final lighter is on a wheelchair)

Yes - imagine if 2020 was happening in Rio (wand no disrespect to Brazilians) or any other ‘less organised’ host. Could have been a disaster.

Closing Ceremony was much better than the Opening, but sadly also heavily restrained due to the Pandemic. You could see potential for so many things which could had been and weren't in the end.

Hopefully Japan will have a better chance to shine ceremonies wise in Nagoya-Aichi 2026.

Barcelona was great , but not on the scale of SYD/ATH/BEI/LON....and neither was Atlanta.

I disagree about the scale of Barcelona. It was huge-scale, just not in a baton-twirling sort of way, setting the tone for the more idiosyncratic episodes of Sydney 2000 in particular.

I have always thought that what could have happened if Madrid had won these games…

Wow!!! Spain was one of the most affected countries by the pandemic…

In 2013 when they lost against Tokyo they felt so disappointed. Today I thin Spanish people are grateful of not being elected for these games… They could have a new try for 2036!! It could be so nice to have the Summer Games back in Spain.

I really am curious as to where the Tokyo ceremonies budget actually went . Would be fascinating to find out the breakdown .

No trapdoors or holes , no fly wire system , no large props , no imposing stage construction , limited costumes…. They didn’t even have that much pyro .  Are hiring drones really that expensive …. Or was a big chunk of it golden handshakes to the multiple creatives that left .

The postponement didn’t left enough budgets for ceremonies… That must be the reality.

Cheapest ceremonies of the latest 30 years.

Everyone, I found something amazing...and sad. On the Olympics Reddit forum here (I don't take part, only browse in only that bit during Tokyo because they pick up on lots of stuff I miss), is this thread:

And on it is this link, with the full (69 pics) proposal of MIKIKO for the opening ceremony:

https://bunshun.jp/denshiban/articles/b1486

It's in Japanese so use Google translate. It's actually so sad to see, because it would've been every bit as incredible as the handover and the snippets hinted at. They would've gone absolutely all out. I know as I said earlier, the ceremonies aren't the most important thing Covid hit* but this just makes me more sad about what Japan, and we, missed, and even more certain that if they want to, Tokyo really must get to host properly asap. If they show any positivity towards it once the virus is gone, the IOC must strain every sinew and give Japan every demand they have, and then some. For what they would've done if normal, and for what they did do to save the Olympics, it's the least they deserve.

*Although from the Reddit comments, it seems like there was quite a lot of bullying and possibly corruption at Dentsu, this company they had in charge? Can't have helped. @Palette86is this well known?

Q: I might be alone but I loved Atlanta’s opening,

I wasn't criticising Atlanta's Opening, just saying it wasn't on the scale of SYD/ATH/BEI/LON....

You're not alone. I love them, too even though they are the americanized version of Barcelona.

I love them, because they were the first Olympics I saw when I was 15 and I fell in love with Olympic ceremonies...

So, Atlanta is to blame!!!

Dentsu is a giant and leading advertising agency and has strong connection with politicians.I don't think Mikiko was bullied but was probably excluded by something of a huge power.

Here's an older article by bunshun.(2021/7/28 bunshun digital)
