Ikarus360 Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 I expect a spectacular yet solemn and slow paced opening ceremony, to be honest. My idea is that they might condense all the historic periods of Japan (from Jomon, passing through Heian, Sengoku, Edo, etc. ) until reaching Heisei and showing their technologic achievements after WWII (the robot idea could work) As for the closing, they could do a more lighthearted show where they make fun of themselves like London and Vancouver did (salarymen, bullet train, anime, etc. ). However I think we'll still have to wait until 2017 to know who will direct the ceremonies (I hope they can convince Hayao Miyazaki out of his retirement to do one final job) Quote

In Nagano '98 they played it on Gagaku style (court music from the Heian Era). 1 Quote

phandrosis Posted January 26, 2016 Report Posted January 26, 2016 Some information about the handover ceremony... J-pop diva Sheena Ringo to help produce Tokyo’s handover ceremony in RioJapanese pop diva Sheena Ringo will serve as a production consultant for the flag handover ceremony at this summer’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic organizers said following an executive board meeting on Monday. Sheena was one of eight named to an advisory panel to help produce the eight-minute segment to be held during the closing ceremony at the Maracana for the Rio Olympics on Aug. 21 and the Paralympics on Sept. 18. “I hope to fulfill my job as a consultant in helping showcase Tokyo as well as Japan (to the world),” Sheena, who wrote the official song for the NHK broadcast of soccer’s 2014 World Cup in Brazil, said in a statement.. Joining the chart-topping singer-songwriter on the consulting team are choreographer Mikiko, former synchronized swimming Olympian and Tokyo Games ambassador Mikako Kotani as well as Paralympic shooter Aki Taguchi. “It will be a tall order to squeeze everything into eight minutes,” Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori said. “But I hope we can offer some highlights about Japan that will give the world an idea of what our country is up to.” “Something like this cannot be left to amateurs. We need experts as well as those who have experienced the Olympics and Paralympics to get this right.” The organizing committee on Monday also rubber-stamped the expected appointment of Panasonic Corp. President Kazuhiro Tsuga as vice president to replace Toyota Motor Corp. chief Akio Toyoda, who stepped down last month. http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2016/01/26/national/j-pop-diva-sheena-ringo-help-produce-tokyos-handover-ceremony-rio/#.VqfkoiorKUm Here's a few of her videos, including the song referred to in the article. Ikarus360 Posted January 26, 2016 Report Posted January 26, 2016 I can't help but feel this is somewhat of a Take That and Korea and a reminder that K-Pop was inspired by J-Pop on the first place Btw, Mikiko is the choreographer of three popular J-Pop bands in Japan (Perfume, Sakura Gakuin and BABYMETAL) Perfume are the band which did Monochrome Effect, which you might recognize if any of you guys watch/watched American Dad. Ikarus360 Posted July 9, 2016 Report Posted July 9, 2016 A bit of necroposting but I seriously hope they hire Joe Hisaishi for the ceremonies. He's easily one of the best, if not the best music composer in Japan, Perhaps he's a familiar face for some of you guys who watched the Studio Ghibli films. He was the guy who did all of those memorable songs. Hiring someone who worked in anime for ceremonies wouldn't be weird. Osamu Tezuka's son did the ceremonies of the 2001 East Asian Games in Osaka. 2 Quote

If Joe Hisaishi did the music for Spirited Away (which features my favorite musical score of any Studio Ghibli film) then the Tokyo ceremony could potentially have the greatest music ever composed for the Olympic ceremonies Quote
Ikarus360 Posted July 31, 2016 Report Posted July 31, 2016 A man-made meteor shower launched by satellite could open the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo http://qz.com/689794/a-man-made-meteor-shower-launched-by-satellite-could-open-the-2020-olympic-games-in-tokyo/ A very crazy idea, but it would be awesome if they actualy did it. Ikarus360 Posted August 1, 2016 Report Posted August 1, 2016 Part of the roof is translucent. Also i'm sure it can still be seen at many angles or the screens. The Maracana roof didn't stopped people from seeing the fireworks. This kinda reminds me of that bizarre idea they had of showing hologram football matches for their 2022 WC bid. Quote
Ikarus360 Posted August 10, 2016 Report Posted August 10, 2016 Remember when I mentioned I wanted Joe Hisaishi to take part in the ceremonies? Well, he already worked for the Olympics before. Since he's a native from Nagano, he wrote the soundtrack of the 1998 Nagano Paralympics as well for its theme song. The music used in the Paralympics ceremony was done by him as well, apparently. This is the theme song of the 1998 Paralympics wrote by him, performed live at the Opening Ceremony As heard from the official album. You can listen to excerpts of his album which was released for the games on this website: http://www.mclub.com.ua/vcat.phtml?album=92079 Quote
olympiaki-agones Posted August 11, 2016 Report Posted August 11, 2016 From 2018 to 2022 we all be stuck and get fed up of boring, solemn and cheaper ceremonies. Quote
Ikarus360 Posted August 11, 2016 Report Posted August 11, 2016 ^^ Implying China's not going to waste tons of money to deliver us a 2008 opening ceremony 2.0. And you know they will But yeah, I know your feel. Nagano ceremony was one of the most boring ever (even though I liked the solemn tone which you rarely find anymore in today ceremonies, plus the synchronized Ode to Joy through the world, which was an impressive technological feat at the time). And tbh I don't have huge expectations for the handover either. But lets hope they give us good surprises, after all they're known for their technological feats. I'm actually more scared for Pyeongchang, specially after the abomination the 2014 Asiad ceremonies were. Quote

I completely agree with you about Beijing 2.0 but I wouldn't be so fast to write off 2018 or 2020. I suspect one of their ceremonies will show off some truly innovative technology that their countries have become known for. Plus the KPop segment in 2018 will surely be a sight. Quote
Ikarus360 Posted August 11, 2016 Report Posted August 11, 2016 If both London and Rio paid homage to their respective musical culture (both old and modern) on their ceremonies, its almost certain we'll see it in Korea. Japan's J-Pop is also very popular, however the rise of K-Pop on recent years on what's been part of the Korean Wave has reached the extent their own tourist companies also advertise it as one of Korea main attractions. However, Gwangju 's Universiade opening was so packed with it I got quickly tired. I hope they balance it for the Pyeonghchang ceremonies. I kinda have a feel Japan won't want to give a full history lesson about their country in their opening ceremony. I predict they might do an obligatory segment condensing some of its history or legends but i think they might want to focus on the message of the games and the future, or about sports/daily life in modern Japan. They might do a remembrance for the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake for sure since they're still kinda promoting it (one of the venues for the 2019 Rugby WC is a town which got heavily damaged by the tragedy and is still recovering. Also for what I heard a series of images/videos of people from the most affected areas will be shown at the handover) I also think they won't talk much about multiculturality like Rio did (they could but it might seem a bit hypocrite considering they're among the most homogeneous societies in the world). Maybe they'll do something like London, where they do a historical portion starting at a specific point later in history. Then again, I think Japan is so well know for it's specific artistry in ancient art, to manga and anime and even J-Pop that they could come up with something that goes outside the box of what we've come to expect. I think Japan will present an impressive show in 2020. Quote
