Shadowriver
Well as i read manga (which i prefer) and watch some anime i notice that not much people know Captain Tsubasa in english contries. In Poland there was chanell in 90s called Polonia 1 which was airing lot of anime, it's legendary TV era among my generation, airing quite hardcore for today standards stuff like Yatta-man, Daimos and ofcorse Captain Tsubasa ^^ Even polish broadcaster in news outlet recognized Tsubasa i in that promo but not Doraemon which is complily unknown in Poland So they didn't just hit south america with it and i was plesently suppriced they include him in to this.,. not only i in Poland i guess as it hits childhood memoeries ;]

Did they like it, or was it too stereotyped? (I say that, because I remember one of the few Japanese to come on here and post in the closing days of the 2020 race said most of the comments we were making about manga and such were stereotyped). I hope Palette comes on at some stage to give us in idea of what the public in Japan thought. Well it happens i'm learning Japanese ;p and i browsed #東京2020 hashtag on twitter and it seems positive but i'm too novice to fully understand it, it spawns some fun memes
illustrado
i predicted that rio would have a favela scene. so i thinkg tokyo's OC will have a shibuya crossing section with references to amine and otaku culture. i don't think it will be traditional. may be for the protocol like the flag raising ceremony. unless they do a pandemonium, i think it should focus more on technology and media. here are list of characters (and shows) we should watch out on 2020 detective conan, lupin the 3rd, naruto, blech, ghost fighter, dragonball z, full metal alchmist, samirai x (which may appear on an historical section), slum dunk, hatsune miku i would also like band like baby metal and world order

Ikarus360
I think Japan, much like London in 2012, wants to give a more modern, upbeat and youthful presentation, rather than depending on tradition, and to show how much they've changed on the last years. They weren't used to be known to be self deprecative in the past but things have changed over the last decade and self deprecation seems to be something very usual these days (An example of how crazy they can be, they did a manga depicting the former PM Koizumi as an expert shogi player in Yu-Gi-Oh style, fighting many other popular figures in politics around the world). They often make some criticism/parodies of their own culture in many anime/comics). I think their ceremonies will mostly focus on how they modernized. Maybe some small nods to ancient Japan but not taking the entire show. We already know how bad it was to do a 100% traditional ceremony back in 1998. And since reception to the handover has been very good I'm sure organizers have taken note and will try this approach once more for 2020. I think Shina Ringo might be involved once again in the ceremonies choreography-wise due to her marvelous work, though the director/producer might be someone different this time. Some of us want Ghibli but thinking about it again I think they would probably do something more traditional and storytelling-wise which would clash heavily with the futuristic message/theme they want to use. Athan
Awesome handover by Tokyo! I remember saying that I didn't find their bid particularly exciting and the video done to present their logo was dizzying and definitely not as good as Rio's, but it all changed with the handover. The introduction video was perfect. I liked very much the dark steampunk style of it that allowed them to show traditional Japan in a non-traditional way (this could be a good approach for their ceremonies) as well as modern Japan with skyscrapers, anime and videogames. Having Captain Tsubasa and Doraemon there has been a great success in Spain. They're two of the most popular TV series here, everyone knows these characters and many people were talking about the handover yesterday. Of course, Mario is also very well known. The artistic segment was cold in the sense that it didn't show emotions as a Rio carnival would, but that's exactly what best represents a futuristic technological society like Japan and it's a good contrast to Rio, which I think is great. So very well done, Tokyo! This is the way to go!

Oh, don't mind him. He probably expects something along the lines of sushi roll costumes, ninja, karaoke, game show references and honorable Ken Watanabe. The only acceptable music should be shamisen.

eternalcobi
If there is any hint of Macross, mind the opposition yelling DECULTURE! No worries, there is no Zentradi at present. Anyway, I mean it seriously. Shoji Kawamori must step into the Olympic stage with the best he got. The ones from the United Voices of Macross (Lynn Minmay, Ishtar, Sharon Apple, Fire Bomber, The Nome trifecta of Sara, Mao and Sheryl, followed by Ranka Lee, Mina Forte and the most recent entrants: Walkure) needs to have an expected effect aimed at the athletes. Like this, if the Japanese delegation is hideously troubled in making it to the top of the medal count: And Shonen Knife, yes, an Olympic remake of Michael Macdonald's Ain't No Mountain High Enough

I think Hiroshima is quite outdated problem and not much relevent to current politics other then just being a symbol. 3.11 (not just fukushima which is only a consequence) is probably what is more in Japanese people mind then that and same as 1964 games showed Japan rebuilding it self from war, in this games probably want to show that they recovering from 3.11 and ensure the world that they keep Fukushima in check which same as Chernobyl will be a scar on the map for decades if not centuries. Not to mention they been on axis side during war so i don't think they want to dig much in that part of history.

Or possibly in the centre of the arena for part of the show, like the big house in the London OC. Rio reminded us again that the vertical dimension is particularly important for spectators within the stadium.

The OC is supposed to include a presentation displaying the culture of the host nation (and preferably the host city). Ikarus360
Miyazaki doesn't likes Abe revisionist politics, since he wants to make Japan a big player once again in military, something Miyazaki strongly opposses to since he always gave an anti-war message on his movies. Take a look to "The Wind Rises" and "Grave of the Fireflies" for example. He even called his intentions despicable if you read the article.
