Well, I guess the final nail for IOC credibility in the Western world has been put into the coffin.

Bach is a spineless coward. This is embarassing.

let's see how this will affect future games. we're already seeing some effects now.

Would it.?The fact Sochi 2014 is now a "dead" Games doesn't seem to have shaken them up enough to take any action.

It's either that - or the Olympic Games suffering the fate of the Tour de France...

Well, who thinks that all Russian athletes take drugs?

Well, we shall see. I have a funny feeling that a large number of Russian athletes won't even be able to meet the IOC testing rules . . .

... that is exactly what I meant with "ban through the back door" - Russia will be very careful to send athletes to Rio now, due when there is one positive drug test, Putin's friend Bach will get into a very serious situation...

You seriously think they care if Bach gets into a very serious situation? That situation is already here - my guess is there will be some poisoned IOC meetings ahead.

Bach can't take such decision alone himself...

You are right that the IOC is already in serious situation, but it decided to bear it at the moment - the situation will become worse when there is one single positive drug test of a Russian athlete in Rio...

What a rotten month, and I'm not just talking about the heat. First Hillary, now the Russians...where is the accountability? Shouldn't  all of us be held accountable for our actions? Needless to say, R.I.P Olympic Games 1894-2016

Yes, it wasn't him, it was the whole pro-Putin gang, under direct orders probably. The IOC is also internally obviously in a very divided state, I'm sure we'll soon get some juicy leaks...

Oh and I just read that Stepanova, the whistleblower, is not allowed to participate because of her previous doping ban ("does not meet ethical requirements") - IAAF would've let her in as independent.

Ridiculous beyond words.

That pisses me off also - the IOC denies her participation, due it decided that all Russian athletes are banned, who used drugs in the past - she took drugs in the past - therefore she is banned also...

Interestingly Putin founded a new Russian Drug agency between the CAS decision and today - it shall be run by Vitaly Smirnov...

It is said now that this was done to prevent a general exclusion...

Just another smokescreen.

Rio 2016 must be relieved that nobody is focussing on the fact their Olympic Village is "uninhabitable".

Eh, not really though.  A lot of those stories about preparation and the issues surrounding the host city largely go away when the Olympics start and those narratives are replaced by competition.  But now, this is something that potentially comes to the surface every time a Russian athlete is competing and especially if they win a medal.  This won't go away.  Everyone involved loses out.  What a shame.

I don't know why so many are shocked. Is not like the IOC has ever been a beacon of credibility anyway. They're just a little less worse than FIFA. That's all. And we all know the sole reason Sochi beat Pyeongchang in 2007 was because of Putin's influence.

I'm curious how this will impact the IOC session before Rio. We already know several IOC members supported a blanket ban, so is it at all possible to establish a sort of no-confidence vote to re-elect a president that will stand up for integrity instead of give in to corrupt institutions that will host extravagant events in exchange for being allowed to dope?

I can just imagine what Reedie, Coates, DeFrantz and Lindberg were like during the conference.

I mean in some sports it would have just been a doped up Kazahk/Turk/Azeri/Belorussian etc replacing a doped up Russian on the podium.

Now every time a Russian wins a medal, the other athletes are going to have the same thing going through their heads. Did I just get beat by a doper. Having to stand there with someone that more likely then not cheated, having to listen to the cheaters national anthem.

Did any of you read the IOC decision?

Every single russian athlete lost the right to the presumption of innocence and has to prove himself clean based on specific criteria>>> Am i wrong?

No.  The IOC essentially punted responsibility for this to the IF's.  They can handle this how they see fit.  The IOC could have made the statement themselves and said the whole of Russia is banned.  Instead, they basically said "we don't want to deal with this, we'll let others take care of this."  They're asking the IF's to handle this in a matter of just a couple of weeks, so given that timeframe, it's more than likely that a few dirty athletes will slip through the cracks and be competing in Rio.  And that means every time there's a Russian in a competition, especially if that athlete does well, there will automatically be suspicion.

THE GUARDIAN

Russian athletes will be allowed to go to the Games if they satisfy their sport’s governing body they can prove “to the full satisfaction of his or her International Federation (IF)” that they are demonstrably clean. However, crucially, the IOC has raised the bar on Russian entry by deciding that “the absence of a positive national anti-doping test cannot be considered sufficient by the IFs”.

Instead, individual federations will be required to “carry out an individual analysis of each athlete’s anti-doping record, taking into account only reliable adequate international tests, and the specificities of the athlete’s sport and its rules, in order to ensure a level playing field”.
