Olympic medals dumped in Melbourne rubbish

6 November 2015

MEDALS: A bronze Olympic medal worth thousands of dollars and other Olympic memorabilia have been found in rubbish outside a Melbourne home.

Despite five months of work, police are yet to find the owner of a bronze medal from the 1952 Helsinki Games, a 1948 London Olympic participation medal, and other memorabilia.

The items were handed into Ringwood police on June 15 after they were found dumped with hard rubbish outside a house in Menzies Crescent, Ringwood North.

"We can't link them to burglaries reported to us, or whether they've been reported as lost," Senior Constable Damien Bowman told AAP on Friday.

The Australian Olympic Committee's records have not been able to shed any light on who the medals belong to either, police say.

"Whether they were handed down from one generation to another, or they belong to another athlete from another country, we don't know," Snr Const Bowman said.

"I wouldn't limit it to Australian athletes at this stage."

It's understood the bronze medal from the Helsinki Olympics could be worth up to $10,000.

Police hope a member of the public will be able to point investigators in the right direction.

"We'd just like to get them back to the owner safe and sound," Snr Const Bowman said.

Anyone with information should call Ringwood Police on 03 9871 3000.

Seems very odd that someone should just dump them!

Evidently whoever it was didn't realise how much the medals would fetch or they wouldn't have just casually chucked them in the bin!

Can't believe they still belonged to the medal winners. At least I hope they didn't!!

Listened quite a bit to this story and the media discussed that perhaps the athlete or a family member they have been passed on too may have died and perhaps family were rushing to clear the stuff out and threw them (by mistake?). I just can't imagine throwing anything out that would look like a medal but in this story someone must have seeing as their was a bunch of olympic memorabilia!
