phandrosis
Wikipedia claims about Vancouver's cauldron: "Under IOC rules, the lighting of the Olympic cauldron must be witnessed by those attending the opening ceremony, implying that it must be lit at the location where the ceremony is taking place. Although another IOC rule states that the cauldron should be witnessed outside by the entire residents of the entire host city, this was not possible since the ceremony took place indoors" So if that's true, and I bet there are some experts on this site that can verify this. Does this make Vancouver 2010 W.O., and Toronto 2015 P.A., the only two olympics/regional games to have an opening ceremony indoors? Sochi 2014 was also indoor, with the cauldron outside the stadium in the middle of the Olympic Park.
Victor Mata
There won't be another Pan American Games ceremony like Toronto 2015. It's one of its kind and had a very different language compared to 2007 and 2011. That being said, its weaknesses were evident with some technicalities like the LED placards, the very dark enviroment and long segments. It was too much a cirque show and too little ceremony sometimes. but the uniqueness of the show last night will stand out in Pan American history and send hints to future canadian ceremonies: IMO, Toronto 2015 was more artistic, more inclusive and had the best soundtrack of any PanAm spectacle and tops the more refined Vancouver ceremonies in that same aspects too. Pros: - Great soundtrack; - Video and entrance of the flame; - Abstract execution of overused themes; - Beautiful rendition of O Canada; - The final torchbearers; - Long but fun athletes parade. Twitter loved the dancing volunteers Cons: - Too much wrong stuff during the final leg of the relay: lady lost in darkness; Steve's flame almost died; that cauldron, and there's two of it; - The stadium was so dark it looked like Toronto was hosting a South American Games opening ceremony; I know it fits Cirque's indoor stage focused productions but still; - LED placards were a good ideia but didn't worked for TV; - Segments were a bit too long and momentum was dropped often;

LatinXTC
Please RIO 2016 hire CIRQUE DU SOLEIL to 2016 Summer Olympics opening ceremony Eww no. Rio has no cultural attachment with Cirque Du Soleil so it will be rather pathetic of them to even consider it. This is the Olympic games, not the Pan American Games. Nacholympic
Please RIO 2016 hire CIRQUE DU SOLEIL to 2016 Summer Olympics opening ceremony Brazil has culture enough to create by their own ceremonies and any kind of show... just remember there are many samba schools.... Despite I think they won't create "carnival style" ceremonies, the samba schools can perfect work on them.... as they did on 2007 Pan Am ceremonies which were truly spectacular... TorchbearerSydney
Circ de Soliel in this context seems to me a lot of incredibly beautifully executed colour of movement - signifying nothing. I am so glad they got an outside team (an Australian one at that) to interpret and create a Canadian story in Vancouver. Brazil creativity in telling their story should trump this 'extravaganza formula' anyday. Just watched the Pacific Games- wow there was some amazing passion and ingenuity there. Each team marched over a central platform and gave an impromptu 30 second 'mini show' of dancing, singing, war dances etc- absolutely electric. The ceremonies will not be created by carnival but officers directors will call a carnival to help in the creation of ceremonies. And certainly most of the volunteers are members of the samba schools of Rio.
woohooitsme83
I JUST FINISHED WATCHING THE OC AND OMG IT WAS SO EPIC. EVERYTHING ABOUT IT WAS SO BEAUTIFULLY EPIC. I FELT SO PATRIOTIC EVEN THOUGH I'M NOT CANADIAN. I WAS LITERALLY CRYING WHEN THE FLAME WAS HANDED TO THE TORCHBEARER'S SON. Dissapointed that the cauldon wasn't the CN Tower itself though :-(
Roger87
Please RIO 2016 hire CIRQUE DU SOLEIL to 2016 Summer Olympics opening ceremony[/size] HELL NO!! First of all, Cirque du Soleil has a cultural history for Canada but not for Brazil. Second, the spectacle would be small for an OC for a summer Olympic Games and third, it's a ridiculous idea related to the background and history of Brazil.
Roger87
Also considering this is an unique chance for Brazil, why would they use a foreign formula instead using particular cultural elements like Samba schools, Music from many groups of Brazil and capoeira? Cirque du Soleil worked for Canada, but that doesn't mean it worked for the others. Case point: Nagano 1998 -It was a mess. Every country has a different formula and cultural elements to work for an event like the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics.

LatinXTC
Ceremony cost $30 million That's a lot more than I expected. I bet half of it went to Cirque du Soleil
Lord David
30 million? For that? I expected a huge stage, taking good advantage of the baseball diamond field size. Larger 5 panel screens, covering the Rogers Centre signage and other temporary stuff like the royal box. Even if the roof was never a factor (they could have at least tried to do something with the retractable roof), most of us expect much more for 30 million, especially if much of the cast consists of volunteers.
Nacholympic
Ceremony cost $30 million I think the price is reasonable for the spectacle we watched. Not for having a main stage in a theater style it could cost cheaper.... Spaces have nothing to do with prices but the show itself, and it was quite cool!!!!!
