Mainad
IMO there's far too much obsession with Britain on this forum (and I say that as a Brit!) with opinions swinging wildly from Tony's deranged 'Little Englandism' to Faster's (' I like Angela Lansbury and fish and chips but otherwise find you all rather boring and uninteresting). So can we please call a moratorium on this peculiar obsession with what we like or don't like about the UK and start informing us what we like and dislike about the USA,France, Germany, China, Canada, Australia, North Korea and Nigeria, or is nobody interested enough to tell us! There are OTHER countries out there, you know!!!!!

Ripley
This is all very mildly amusing... I asked one of the Polish people I work with why she likes the UK and she said it had nothing to do with boiled cabbage and rain (was quite surprised)... she said for Poles the UK just seemed more free than other places. I tried to play devil's advocate citing class, lack of language skills and general disdain for anything European... but she said day to day life here was a lot easier. She thinks our rabid press are so critical and scrutinise everything so much that it forces things to change for the better to an extent that doesn't happen in some other countries. She said if you took Italy and replaced the Italians with Brits you'd end up with the perfect country. Not so sure about that, but interesting perspective all the same. There are OTHER countries out there, you know!!!!! Nah, that is what makes the UK so interesting. It is so diverse and has so many facets that it is very hard to not find something to love. And as a Canadian the UK is only second to the USA as cultural driver in Canada. No matter what we can't escape your influence. I will freely admit that until recently I never was that compelled to visit the UK. It was reading the final Harry Potter books and the descriptions of the various places like the Forest of Dean that made the UK suddenly a lot more interesting because it became more then just London and more then just the stuffy traditions and classist society that often gets depicted. London's Opening Ceremony also was very revealing about what lies beneath the British veneer. I am not sure many societies would be as confident to pull off some of those segments and it was certainly a departure from the previous 2 summer Ceremonies. Gotta sympathize with a people that put health care as a national symbol of pride.

Lol...seems a tad ironic that Harry Potter is managing to do what even Shakespeare couldn't manage...entice you to visit the UK!

Well I wasn't entirely aware that Shakespeare provided gripping descriptions of the various parts of the UK with maybe the exception of the White Cliffs of Dover in King Lear. Well, Shakespeare's best, most lyrical, most performed and enduring plays today are the ones set in Italy or magical settings (Tempest, Midsummer's Nights). All the UK-set ones are the same old grind.
Faster
Well it is not like Shakespeare had much experience outside of Southeast England so his descriptions of places all tend to be Londonish.

All the UK-set ones are the same old grind. Richard II, Henry IV (Parts 1, 2 & 3), Henry V (partly set in England), Richard III, King Lear, Macbeth, The Merry Wives of Windsor, As You Like It (set in the Forest of Arden) "all part of the same old grind"? Maybe I got you wrong, Faster. Maybe it's our old friend Baron who is the real Anglophobe on here (come to think of it he was really scathing about London winning 2012) and he's not even Canadian! Faster
What's there to be afraid of? The Brits will polite you to death? Become overly verbose? Offer you some tea and crumpets? Or worse yet black pudding, steak and kidney pie or Christmas pudding?

I seem to have grown up and was more exposed to the Italian-set plays (R&J, Julius Caesar, Taming of the Shrew, Gentlemen of Verona, etc.) and Prospero's Island.
