Scotguy 330
The news here is bigging it up big style. Bigger than the Rugby World Cup with an audience of 1 Billion watching the Opening Ceremony. 1,000 performers, the biggest firework display since the Millenium The All Blacks Was going to go watch it at the big screen at the Wellington Fanzone, but I couldn't find it. The Opening Ceremony has been shrouded in secrecy according to the news casters. I wonder what the big secret spectacular moment will be..... Anyway, just over 2 hours to go

mattygs 274
Nothing. LOLOL. Really, it's the Cantabs moment in the sun , they've made this a community event for everyone to enjoy. It's done by a reasonably little known creative team. It'll be awesome at what it is, but a traditional opening ceremony it is not. I don't really think the angle they're taking is a bad thing though. In any case, be fantastic to get this thing underway, a long time coming.
Alexjc 354
I've actually set MySky to record it as I'm off elsewhere for the evening. Still agree with Mattygs, this is more a Christchurch being rewarded for shear determination over the last four years. They even got the new tram route running after a four year delay as well. Christchurch is still very much a city in rebuild, still a lot of temporary facilities of everything and there are still not enough builders to go around. It is getting it's vibe back though and events like this help the city's morale. Great to see the families gathering around the main performance stage. Starts very shortly at 1930 NZDST. ...Now if we can get a new covered stadium built and rebuild the cathedral. *off topic a bit - announced today is that Shirley Boys High School and Avonside Girls College are to merge as one high school on the site of QEII Park...and be named QEII College. mattygs 274
The pre opening at Hagley appears to include various stages around the place, themed. There are also 4 gigantic games of backyard cricket being held, with 80 school kids. The fields are separated into 4 different ovals representing the various playing nations. So Beige, Caribbean As, Spicy As, and Traditional As As much as I love a good old fashioned bit of stadium theatre, I like this angle. It's suiting a city where it would almost feel still a tad inappropriate to have anything too flashy. Amazing weather down in Crikers by the looks of it.
Alexjc 354
Televised opening underway now...Different. Very much a concert atmosphere.
Scotguy 330
Yeah this is an outdoor Granada 2015. I guess its appropriate for cricket.
mattygs 274
Yeah this is an outdoor Granada 2015. I guess its appropriate for cricket. I think that's a little bit of a silly analogy don't you? That was a couple of speeches in a conference hall. This is infront of thousands outside featuring cultural performances, sporting celebrities, music and dance (including popular music acts) and fireworks. More like a Christmas in the Park/ Symphony Under the Stars I'd say. And Granada didn't have him I guess also, while on the theme of music..... While the 2015 cup doesn't have an official mascot, it does have an official song/theme music. *Bobs Beat* by WDL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KQlzkd9K4Y
