Asia ready for first step on road to Russia

(FIFA.com)

10 Feb 2015

The draw for the first round of 2018 FIFA World Cup™ qualifiers threw up some intriguing ties, as the 12 lowest-ranked Asian Football Confederation (AFC) teams discovered who they will face in their first step on the road to Russia.

...

All the ties will be played over two legs, home and away, with the first match taking place on 12 March and the return game on 17 March. The winners will progress to Round 2 of AFC qualifying, joining the remaining 34 teams in the confederation.

The second round, which begins in June, will see eight groups of five teams play off in a round-robin format. The AFC World Cup qualifiers also double as a qualifying competition for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, with the eight group winners and four best runners-up progressing to the final round of 2018 World Cup qualifying, and securing an automatic place at the 2019 continental showpiece.

Those latter stages seem a long way off for the 12 teams drawn in Round 1, but every journey begins with a single step.

AFC 2018 World Cup / 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifying Round 1

Ties to be played Thursday 12 March & Tuesday 17 March:

India v Nepal

Yemen v Pakistan

Timor-Leste v Mongolia

Cambodia v Macau

Chinese Taipei v Brunei Darussalam

Sri Lanka v Bhutan

FIFA: Zimbabwe expelled from 2018 World Cup qualifying

ZURICH (AP) — FIFA has expelled Zimbabwe from 2018 World Cup qualifying for failing to pay its national team coach.

FIFA's disciplinary committee says it took the action "as a result of the non-payment of an outstanding debt" by Zimbabwe's football federation to coach Jose Claudinei Georgini.

FIFA says Zimbabwe failed to make the payments despite a grace period.

As a result, Zimbabwe has been kicked out of the preliminary qualifying competition for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Indonesia disqualified from 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia and AFC Asian Cup 2019 qualifiers

Indonesia will not compete in the joint 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ and AFC Asian Cup 2019 qualifiers following a decision taken at the extraordinary meeting of the FIFA Executive Committee on 30 May 2015.

The Executive decided to suspend the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) until the PSSI would be able to comply with its obligations under arts. 13 and 17 of the FIFA Statutes. This decision resulted from the effective “take over” of the activities of PSSI by the Indonesian authorities.

In agreement with the Asian Football Confederation, the PSSI have been advised of the national team’s disqualification from the joint qualifiers as detailed above. All of Indonesia’s matches from Group F of the joint qualifying competition are thus deleted.

How does this impact Indonesia's duties as the 2018 Asian Games' host? They do have football in the Asian Games, do they??
