Canada in Rio.

Recommended Posts

Since my fellow Canadians don't seem too interested. I will just talk to myself.

Absolutely gutted for Santo Condorelli. 0.03s from a medal.

Biyarslanov won his opening round bout and the British commentator thinks he has an outside chance at a medal.

WTF! This Olympics has been weird. I hadn't realized how back-loaded the schedule was for Canada (similar to Beijing). But 7 medals in 6 days plus the potential over the next two days, Canada could blow my prediction of 11 medals in a week.

A new Canadian Olympic star is born. I never expected Canada to do so well in the pool. All these medals are bonus as no one predicted us to medal in the pool. Canada should surpass its medal total from London, or dare I say surpass Atlanta 1996 (22 medals).

Faster, your probably the best person to ask this. How many legitimate medal chances are left?

I am more pessimistic than intoronto. So we would probably have different attitudes.

Broadly speaking Canadian athletes/teams should be in the finals/medal conversation in:

Athletics

Andrea De Grasse, 100m, 200m

Canada 4x100m relay

Brandon McBridge in 800m (should be a finalist)

Any one of the three in the 20km racewalk

Derek Drouin in high jump

Shawnancy Barber in pole vault

Damian Warner in decathlon

Brianne Thiessen-Eaton in heptathlon

Melissa Bishop in 800m

Very outside chances, but Nettey, Gleadle and one of the 100m hurdles all possess enough skill/speed to get into top 5

Basketball

Definitely feel that the Canadian women have a chance at a medal. If they can beat Spain and finish 2nd in their group they will have a relatively straight-forward quarter-final against Turkey/Japan

Boxing

I am not convinced by this, but the BBC/OBC commentators think all 3 Canadians have legitimate to outside chances at a medal.

Canoe/Kayak

Oldershaw, van Koeverdan and de Jong all are potential medalists. de Jong being the favourite in the 200m but has looked off this season

Cycling

The women's team pursuit will have to step things up to be in the medal conversation. Not confident with this one anymore. Beveridge has a outside chance in the omnium. Batty and Pendrel are both potential medalists in mountain biking.

Diving

All 4 female Canadian divers are talented enough to medal, they just need to put it together over 3 rounds of diving. Hopefully Abel/Ware can medal to make up for the disappointing miss in the 3m synchro

Equestrian

The equestrian circles I pay attention to think that Lamaze is a dark-horse for a medal individually. He has been very good over the last 4 months. Including a few wins against an almost full field.

Football

Canada is in tough against France, but win and they are a strong medal contender.

Golf

DeLaet had a strong start, lets see if he can finish or if the likes of Justin Rose, Martin Kaymer and Henrik Stenson can put it together. Henderson has a great shot at a medal.

Gymnastics

Burnett and MacLennan both have the skill to medal. Burnett just often can't put it all together.

Rowing

LWT double sculls should medal, the women's 8 looks good and the men's 4 is in with a chance. Keeping with the Australians in the 4's will be key

Swimming

Chantal van Landeghem is a potential medalist in the 50m free, especially with the head case Australians. She would need to swim a NR to get in the conversation. Hillary Caldwell is a strong medal contender in the 200m back. The 4x100m medley relay should medal. Ryan Cochrane will be in tough in the 1500m. But who knows.

Tennis

Nestor/Pospisil are favoured to win bronze tomorrow

Volleyball

Bansly/Pavan are in the conversation in women's beach. Unfortunately the Canadian teams face each other.

Wrestling

All 6 Canadian women are medal hopefuls. The lighter 2 and the heavier 2 being the most likely.

Rowing Canada has maintained their medal strike for Canada, it now stands at 24 years. Diving is at 20 years, wrestling is at 20 and likely will join rowing at 24.

BTE had a rough start to her heptathlon. 6th place, but gave a lot of points up to JEH. What is with all the double-barreled names in heptathlon.

I'd just like to say - Ellie Black created history when she placed 5th in the Women's Individual All-Around last night, Highest ever from a Canadian Gymnast! Also, Shallon Olsen qualfied for the Vault Event Finals and Isabela Onyshko qualified for the Balance Beam Event Finals.

If she had went for a bit more difficulty she could have done even better. She gave up a lot on vault and floor.

i have to say i love rosie and want to steal her for my country. she's just about the best thing about the games 2 times running.

sometimes i feel like canadians choke a bit too often in sports like diving, but rosie performs like a cloistered chinese athlete or a romanian gymnast circa 1976.

staying for her medal ceremony cause i saw her london one too. really love this girl and hope she's back for tokyo. this good news was literally just tempered by the fact that USA is out of archery gold as of 30 seconds ago, but whatever. as canadians know, you win some, you lose a lot.

I wonder who will step up to win our traditional 3rd Olympic championship?

Brianne Theisen-Eaton had a rocky hurdles, but a good high jump. She is in the same position as in the WC last year, but with a higher point total. Though further behind. She should make up a lot of ground on those ahead of her tonight. Hopefully. Ennis-Hill looks unstoppable.

Wondering if Cochrane played possum, or is really out of it?

So Canada has gone 2/4 in medal chances today and 2/3 in SI predictions. So SI had us at 6 medals today, Canada is at 9 and hopefully 10 by end of day.

Tomorrow there is women's heptathlon, women's team pursuit, women's 8's, men's 1500m, women's medley relay. Outside chances on men's trampoline and women's 50m free.

Unless wrestling goes really well, 18 to 19 is probably the finishing mark now.
