The great GB census! 2015 edition.

Tony, in case you have ever travelled outside Her Majesty's Realm, it might occur to you (when you look at that red passport of yours which you use to, you know, fly to other countries) that your country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, of which England is merely a constituent sub-national unit. It is no more a country than Catalonia is within Spain, constitutionally speaking.

Actually, constitutionally speaking, England is a constituent country of the nation state of the UK. There is nothing at all controversial or wrong about calling England (or Scotland or Wales) a country, as that's how they're recognised culturally and geographically (and indeed, in acts of devolution which came into place at the end of the 20th century, in law). It's normal nomeclature to call them as such. I'm not sure you could say the same of Catelonia as I don't know how the language translates the word "country" or how Spanish law describes it.

Point taken. That said, I was merely objecting to Tony's perma-nationalism on here. Diplomatically speaking, it's quite irritating on a board with members from across the world. I'm usually quite suspicious of boasts stating that a particular country is "the best in the world". Love of country is one thing, but blind, ignorant nationalism is quite another.

So England is both a country and not a country. England is ߷. Tony loves England, which is ߷. So Tony loves ߷.

England is a Country. There is nothing wrong about being passionate about my Country. I have nothing against other Countries, just that I love my Country. Also, check back quite a few pages, I didn't start this whole argument. This thread had no replies for ages, then someone decided to post something about me and England. Have a look if you don't believe me.

You didn't have to comment and push the argument along.

You need to learn when to give a **** and when not to give a ****. Once you get that down in life, your life will be so much easier. This was one of the times not to give a ****.

Nation is the more appropriate term though. Country implies sovereignty which England, Scotland and Wales are not. The UK is not a nation state, but a federal state. 3.1875 nations make up the country that is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I know it is pandemic political geography but the use of the terms country, nation and nation state have very specific meanings.

Ireland is a perfect example. The Republic of Ireland is not a nation, but a state and country. The Island of Ireland is a nation made up of a state and a substate entity.

Yugoslavia was another example. It was a country, made up of 6 nations. Nation is in terms of people. Hence nation-state is a group of culturally independent people that control territory that is governed as a politically recognized entity.

England is a Country. Anyway, can we just agree to disagree. I'm not trying to be in control, I just want the arguing to stop.

Tony we would but a few things:

1. No one here really respects because of no. 2

2. You say you will stop but you give in again and again

3. You go beyond just loving your country, you can not fathom why anyone would not love your country. That's ignorance and nationalistic.

4. Your grammar is really bad (mine is as well so I can not really talk)

5. You are arrogant

6. You are ignorant

7. You take everything too literally

Those are just a few reasons why no member here in their right mind would agree to disagree with you.

You do realize that your posting limit will never be lifted, right? It was all just a clever ploy by the mod to appease the other members while at the same time follow GB's forum rules and not infringe on your rights to free speech. I don't see the point in continually posting this nonsense five times per day if it's not going to get you anywhere down the road.

Precisely. From my reading of threads in the past few months, it seems that Tony hasn't learnt a single thing. Continually blaming external factors isn't going to cut it. Additionally, given the strife and stress he causes to other members here by continually spouting nonsense, being ultra-nationalistic, picking fights and constantly drawing attention to himself, I believe that his IP address and account should be completely banned from this forum.

One thing I notice in his "contributions" is his tendency to constantly blame others and repeating (ad nauseam) really that he has made progress. I am/have been friends with individuals who have had mental health issues as well - but they have been more willing to work on themselves than Tony seems to be, and to seek help from healthcare professionals. I could tolerate his constant repetitiveness and unwillingness to change if he showed particular insight on Olympic affairs. But far from doing that, his understanding of the entire bidding process is, at best, tenuous.

Tony, this site isn't going to give you anything - but a mental health specialist, for instance a counsellor or psychotherapist, may very well be able to help with cognitive behavioral therapy. Instead of spending your time here and repeating the same old things, why don't you just think about getting medical help by people who are familiar with your condition and can actually help you live a productive and fulfilling life in the mid- to long-term?

<_< I think the rest of us here kind of treats Tony as a form of Entertainment during these "quiet tween games times". We do egg him on probably unintentionally all the same.

See, if you think his post was bullying you, you haven't understood a thing.

It's a pity, but there was some great advice in therr for you and you chose to ignore it.

Feel free to resort to name-calling, Tony. I'm not impressed by it, and I doubt many on this board are. I'm generally very loathe towards people who complain about their lot in life, but are unwilling to take active steps to address it - all the while being surprised that a fairly large number of individuals on here quite simply dislike your attitude. I doubt they dislike you as a person, Tony, since they quite simply don't know you. That said, they have seen the way you act. And it sure ain't pretty. That said, the fact that you're spending so much time on here and permanently trying to justify your frankly irritating, petulant, childish and generally unedifying conduct only demonstrates that you've not been particularly successful with building a dependable circle of friends and friendly acquaintances.

Now, whilst I'm not standing in judgment of you (who the hell would I be anyway?), I do have to wonder whether you're not actually living a lie. The lie I'm talking about, Tony? That it's everyone else's fault, but never yours. You permanently talk about self-improvement and use all the buzzwords, but you don't act on it. You ask for compassion from others, yet lack compassion for yourself as you trap yourself in a perpetual cycle of justification, loathing for those who dare tell the truth and failing to admit your (very substantial) role in the mess that is your status on this board (and presumably in other stations of life). Every one of your posts lacks thematic substance, substantive insight or original thought - you just parrot what you picked up on the internet or, worst, what other posters already said. You make grandiose statements like "I knew Durban would get the Commonwealth Games" (and please don't do a detailed counter-rebuttal on this point, this is merely an example) and don't back them up.

It's this, besides your immature attitude to life and your unwillingness to give a quarter to anyone of us, that turns people off. I know that some among us on GB have turned you into a joke. Whilst that's rather unfortunate, it is an expression of the frustration and anger people feel with individuals like you who abdicate all responsibility - taking credit for things that go without saying and apportioning blame for their stuff-ups to the rest of the world. Your medical condition is NOT your fault, but your attitude towards dealing with it certainly is. You are like the cricketer who walks onto the pitch and destroys the wickets before asking the other side to bowl.

Contrary to your modus operandi of self-pity, I offered some constructive advice for you: Your strategy of permanent (and tiresome) self-victimization is just that, a strategy. You're an attention-seeker and not even a particularly adept one at that. It's quite evident that you do require help by a professional who can assist you with a change in behaviour, something that cognitive-behavioral therapy is designed to do (here is some more info and an online register from the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies). That's what counsellors are for, and I'm pretty sure the NHS does offer these services. I have friends who needed help and felt better for it. So I'm not talking out of my backside, and I certainly take exception to being called a bully. How dare you!

There is absolutely no shame or disgrace in seeking assistance from medical professionals, and getting your loved ones on board with that as well. True change takes time, especially when attitudes like yours have become very ingrained. So don't be discouraged. Speaking to a medical professional who will know your entire biography and issues with family, friendships, traumas etc can set you free. But spending time on a board dealing with bids for the Olympic Games will always generate discussion, debate and, yes, sometimes even spirited arguments. This is not the environment in which to act out. Admitting that is not a failure, Tony, it would be a great sign of strength.

However, it's entirely up to you to seek help and accept advice given to you. Your course of action and conduct to date don't suggest that you're either willing or able to get out of the role of a victim. Maybe you're quite simply too comfortable being a victim than standing up for yourself.

I'm not sure he does realize that. It is quite clear to me (and Tony and I have exchanged some PMs, the nature of which I will keep private) that Tony's presence here is almost more of a chore than what it is for most of the rest of us.. a diversion from our regular affairs to discussion a subject that we are interested and/or passionate about. Tony clearly has a very specific window of time he spends online and comes to this site. It's almost robotic how consistent it is too, so that's clearly not a coincidence.

Tony, I'll express this to you again privately, but I'll say it again here.. walk away from a discussion like this. Coming to this site obviously causes you stress and anxiety that you shouldn't have to deal with. You choose to come here and deal with it in your own way and yet the cycle continues. I would like to think the half hour you are here each day would be enjoyable for you, but it is apparent that it is not. So why bother? I'm not saying that to make you leave this forum. I'm saying it because you are struggling with being here and can't seem to simply get away from this all when we can all see it's causing you stress.

PBE brings up a lot of good points. He's not trying to bully you or insult you. I've said it to you before.. we can accept and forgive you for your faults if you took responsibility for yourself. And you know what, for a while you most certainly did. You were a better poster here for a while and even some of the people in this conversation acknowledged it. You were giving more thoughtful and insightful posts and showed that you do have it in you to contribute to these forums even after you kept saying your issues couldn't be overcome. You accomplished that and you should be proud of yourself. But now you've fallen back into this cycle where you're arguing with members here (and make no mistake.. YOU were the one who inserted yourself into the conversation and took offense to a comment that was not directed at you) and now you blame others for it. You can make this all stop by simply not posting in this topic anymore. You don't need to reply to everyone to mentions you. And you certainly don't need to start the "back to topic" nonsense where you're trying to get in the last word and think that's the end of it. Just let it go. Let it go and find your way back to the new and improved Tony. We know he's in there somewhere and sure, some people here don't make it easy for you, but some things aren't easy. You overcame that once. Do it again or else you shouldn't be here. For your own good.

Anyhow - thoughts on 'Rebel Heart'? I've just given it a skim but love the title track, 'Ghosttown', 'Joan Of Arc'... I like my Madge slowwwwwww. She is such an under-rated balladeer. Balladess?

All flapping in the wind?
