Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games medals to include recycled metal

The Brazilian Mint will produce the objects most desired by the world's top athletes in the next few years – the medals that will be awarded at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Having become an official supplier of Rio 2016, the company has committed to producing 4,924 award medals and 75,000 participation medals for the first edition of the Games to be staged in South America.

“The medals are one of the most important symbols of the Games and we are very pleased that we can count on the Brazilian Mint as our partner in this unique moment in the history of the Brazilian sport,” said Rio 2016 President Carlos Nuzman.

Made of gold, silver and bronze, the award medals will also include metal derived from recycled electronic equipment, illustrating Rio 2016’s commitment to sustainability.

Conceived by the Rio 2016 design team, the medals will be developed by designers at the Brazilian Mint.

“The Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro is a very special event and we could not stay out of it,” said Brazilian Mint President Francisco Franco. “We hope most of these medals will be won by Brazilian competitors.”

The Brazilian Mint also produced the award medals for the 2011 Military World Games and 2007 Pan-American Games, which were both held in Rio de Janeiro. For Rio 2016, it will produce the medals, medal ribbons, award diplomas, certificates of authenticity, participation and commemorative certificates, as well as the commemorative medals, which are special collectors’ items.

The medals themselves are nice and clean after London's really very messy ones. And the ribbons are in the Games colours. I'd say they're a success.

The podium looks really cheap, like somebody's stuck some fake grass to three cardboard boxes and coloured them in with crayons. Not liking it. Preferred London's more "victorious" design.

Well, regardless of medals. The repercussion in the Brazilian media is low so far. Reflects the absence of the Olympic atmosphere in the country .

The three largest news portals ( UOL , G1 and R7 ) do not put on the front page medals .

TV stations should only show on the evening news .

On the internet, out of Trending Topics on Twitter, which is dominated by Euro'16 (Iceland and Hungary) , dismissal of the coach of the Brazilian national football team, and the name of the congressman ' Tia Eron '.

There's something VERY big going on at the Chamber of Deputies at Brasilia this afternoon. Can't blame them.
