Joint Norway-Sweden 2026 Olympic Bid Suggested

Recommended Posts

Well it could be a good idea, that way some of the spending would be split between the two countries, and the public opinion could be ok with it. (though it probably means double the security costs, double the hotel rooms for the IOC, more transportation costs etc etc)

Well, not really. Trondheim OR Are would have to be the anchor city, and therefore that's where the IOC would hold court. The other city will have to be subordinate city and play 2nd fiddle to the main one. Yes, some of the IOC members would have to stay in the 2ndary city; but that would be about the only duplication. Venues, operations would be shared -- so I don't see how there could be duplication of security measures. Each host/country takes care of its own venues -- and since they used to be one country before, it's not like one culture is Vulcan and the other is Romulan. This is where it makes sense to have a joint bid. It's only up to them-- if this proceeds at all, as to who will be the lead city and which one will be #2.

Ha, with the Star Trek reference. But we all know what an "equal" Norwegian-Swedish Games would be like, having to hear announcements in 2 annoyingly similar languages!

Bork, bork, bork and Berk, berk, berk!

Obviously, if it happened, it would be Stockholm-Oslo Joint Bid. Both can Host by themselves though, Sweden having the better chance IMO.

Did you see the part of the article where it said..

The official suggested a joint bid between Trondheim Norway and Are Sweden, which are about 100 miles apart, but said there had been no talks with Swedish officials.

So no, not obvious at all it would be Stockholm and Oslo

Officials come up with suggestions like this now and then which have no basis in how the Games actually work. I cannot see anything coming out of Norway for the foreseeable future and Norway are capable of hosting by themselves. Cross border bids are only allowed if the principle host country does not have the necessary geographical features and Norway clearly does. I'm still holding out for a future Swedish bid from Stockholm.

Ok, let Me re word it. IF Sweden and Norway Joint Bid, Stockholm-Oslo would be the best Bid for them. They both can Host the Winter Olympics and Paralympics by themselves though.

Mountains Tony. You need mountains.

And *you* need to stop adding "and Paralympics"

No Mountains didn't stop Stockholm-Are and Oslo-Lillehammer Bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

Stop moaning. There is nothing wrong with adding the Paralympics.

Homeschooling exercise for the day. Read what you just wrong, then go back and read what you said about Stockholm and Oslo being able to host on their own. With the contractiction!

You'be been told how annoying it is when you add Paralympics. Do you think there is nothing wrong with annoying people?

Get a map (including topography) of Scandinavia.

Look where Oslo is. Look where Stockholm is. Look how far each of them is from mountains. Look how far the capitals are away from each other.

Then come back and tell us if you maintain that a joint Oslo/Stockholm bid would be obvious, or that Oslo 2022 had issues with lack of mountains nearby, like Stockholm 2022.

The mountain issue was less of a problem with regards to Oslo-Lillehammer, they proved that they can move people from the capital to the Lillehammer region, with regards to Norway's bid. But for Sweden, the mountain issue was definitely an issue with regards to Stockholm-Are, it's not like Are is right next to Ostersund where they can use the airport for transport links, it's like a good 80km away by road.

^the mountains were a big issue though. Stockholm wouldn't have done very well based on that alone.

Given the IOC's reaction to Oslo's withdrawal, Stockholm would have been in a great spot to win, distance to Are or not. That would have been a major sticking point in a full field that included Oslo and Krakow. Not so much if their only competition came from Almaty and Beijing.

The distance between Stockholm and Are will never be a problem to the Bid. There are plans to Build a High Speed Train between them.

Stockholm/Are was one of the Favourites to Host the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics before they withdrew.
