zekekelso
In practice, a temporary stadium may make the most sense. But to the average person, it's insane. $350 million for something that's going to be torn down after two weeks??? There's simply no way the average Joe can accept that. You have to at least pretend that the stadium has a future.
baron-pierreIV
How about an "imaginary" stadium and an imaginary T&F competition? That would be the cheapest and most affordable.
Anthony
One of my favorite parts! baron-pierreIV
SF 2024's temp stadium planned in Brisbane (take that, Brisbane, Australia!!) http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Inside-S-F-s-bid-for-2024-Olympic-Summer-Games-5967054.php#photo-7288470 SF 2024's venue plan Could change a little depending on like, if Coliseum City gets built. I guess they're dropping SHOOTING (or at Stanford since the Modern P. is placed there). Also, no use for AT&T Giants Park so far. I don't know what all that earlier talk about putting Ping-Pong in Chinatown, was about. Utter rubbish. Now, it's going into that very tight Kezar Pavilion (where I used to play some volleyball). I'm intrigued. Not sure how much I like the stadium design, but I could see this working. Like anyone else, there's a couple of things I'd change to the venue plan and we all know there will be plenty of opposition and political red tape. Overall though, not bad. Not bad at all

Usa2024olympics
Let's not fuss about the stadium design, it could be worse. Plus, if San Fran is awarded the games the design will most likely change, remember London's in 2005 and how many transitions it went through. Yep, and looking at that render above reminded me of some of the issues London had. A roofless stadium was considered at one point but wind modelling at track level showed a minimal roof was needed to ensure ideal conditions for athletes. That big section with no roof may have the same problems. But as you say, this is a very early render.

Alas it will undergo many changes even if they do not win the bid.
TorchbearerSydney
I would love a thread of all the 'proposed venues' in bids, next to photos of actual venues.... change is the norm!

Not bad at all That struck me too. But the stadium design is just an architect's rendering (doesn't even show a cauldron!). $350 million ain't gonna get you that kinda roof. Plus, it never rains in June-August down there; so what do you need the roof for? That's merely a visualization of something to include in the bid. Reality will be far from that. Good example is Beijing's Bird Nest which was designed after the bid and was supposed to have a retractable roof.
DamC
San Jose is so far from San Francisco, I was thinking they would stage more indoor sports at the Moscone Center... Otherwise I think it's a decent venue plan, though it's quite spread out and not very "clustered" (unlike Rio)
paul
... I was surprised not to see Moscone as a hub for more...of course it would be utilized to the max if this happened. Stayed at the W for a bio-science convention earlier this year....everything soma was INSANELY busy......cant imagine an Olympics....but then I'm usual in a car....wouldn't be so bad as a pedestrian. Also (as someone form SF) I think San Jose is not so far as we imagine, it's just that when you are used to a city as compact as SF any jont out sees like forever.......really anything past Stanford does feel like you are on a road trip. Moscone. With only 2 sports assigned to Moscone, I think the remaining space will be the IBC. Thus no need to build another large cavern thing for 1-time use. (Altho of course, there is the San Mateo Convention Center which was the Media Center in the 2016 plan.) By 2024, if funding goes well, BART may extend all the way to San Jose. Plus having 3 sports in SJ kinda lessens the lodging crush in SF, i.e., like officials and devotees of Volleyball, Taekwondo, wrestling and football could find their accommodations in the San Jose area & environs. So that's actually a wise move. Strange too that there is nothing for Oakland, altho they have the Kaiser Convention center (interior below) there for one of the box sports. It's a 5,400+ seat arena which could easily host wrestling or even Table Tennis. (Just a little hard to get to -- but walkable from the Lake Merritt BART station.) But it could be on reserve for one of those sports if things need changing around.

baron-pierreIV
baron, this might interest you as it concerns Coliseum City.. Report: Raiders renew their lease to stay in Oakland for at least one more year I don't know what a 1-year extension really means. Why not a longer-term extension? Does that mean that CC is still very much in the air?? I guess Oakland still won't give AL Davis more public monies to put up a new stadium. As if donation of the land wasn't already enough. I'd say it's pretty unlikely that Oakland will give Al Davis money considering he's no longer alive. The reason for the 1 year extension is to kick the proverbial can down the road. There have been rumblings the Raiders might consider moving to LA, but the NFL shot that down. So this just pushes the decision til next year. You know the Bay Area better than I do, so not sure if this is just a stay of execution to get some sort of deal done regarding the Coliseum. For better or worse, it probably just means we'll be right back here next year.
