zekekelso
While we all react to the lastest news from 2022, is there really a lack-of-quality-bidders crisis? There were a number of strong cities bidding for 2016/2018/2020... there is at least talk from many major cities for 2024. And while we think of Bejing as the "turd sandwich" option of 2022, it's still an extrodinary city and capital of the largest country in the world. I guess we won't know until we see who does/doesn't bid for 2024. And we really won't have a know for sure until the 2026 bids, but it is possible things aren't so bad? Gold Coast Lions
I could see Barcelona Spain and the USA bidding for the 2026 Winter Games with most likely Reno - Lake Tahoe for the USOC regardless if Los Angeles gets the 2024 Summer Games I could see the 2026 Winter Games very likely to go to the USA and have an back to back USA games it almost happen with 1996/1998 games. Tony E Loves Architecture
Beijing is the Best out of this bad situation. Beijing 2022 will happen, not Almaty 2022. Whether GCL and Olympic Fan Darcy like it or not, Beijing will Host, Almaty won't. IF Almaty Hosts, then the IOC has caused a mess.

You just said, twice, in addition to the hundreds of times you've already posted it, that Almaty won't host. So then why the "IF Almaty Hosts" comment? Make up your mind! Quaker2001
Sock puppets! Personally, I think of Beijing more as the giant douche and Almaty as the turd sandwich, but that's beside the point. I think the issue isn't just a lack of quality bidders, but the reasoning behind it. Economic conditions can ebb and flow, so that's not the issue. The problem IMO is that the subtext behind these countries that have pulled out is that they don't want to work with the IOC. Easier for them to cite cost concerns and popular opinion, but that's only part of it. 2024 will probably paint a more accurate picture. Very possible we're looking at a bid from South Africa, one from the United States, and maybe a couple of big cities in Europe. But if any or all of them don't wish to tango with the IOC, particularly the United States where they've been vetting out a candidate for some time now, then it's a sign the IOC might be in trouble. And make no mistake.. this is their own doing if that's the case. It won't be like the 70's and 80s where the lack of bidders were due more to circumstances involved recent host cities. As much as we can claim that Sochi is responsible for this mess, what changed back then was Los Angeles coming in to save the day. There might not be an opportunity for that to happen if the IOC doesn't figure out a way to reform themselves
LatinXTC
Beijing the city isn't necessarily the problem here, it's Zhangjiakou and Yanqing county that they're more worried about, and the potential repeat of another corrupt and overinflated Sochi games. Ikarus360
The IOC was stupid for digging their own grave with all those crazy demands they did to Oslo which looked like something a spoiled rich brat like Paris Hilton would do. But Tony does has a point. Almaty is a very risky choice because of the high probabilities they will spend tons of money a la Sochi,or even worse. I mean, they moved the capital to Astana in the late 90's and invested insane sums of money to turn it onto a theme park. What could prevent them of doing it again Quoted from Wikipedia, taken from the article: Green, Peter (11 June 1998). "Kazakhs Raise Curtain on Remote New Capital, but Many Ask Why". International Herald-Tribune. To some Kazakhs, the move remains controversial with critics citing the city's isolated location in the center of the Kazakh steppe and the forbidding climate in winter.[14] Financially, some resent the massive expenditure of public funds to build the new government complexes, as well as the continuing cost of airfare and hotel expenses for the many government workers who still live in Almaty Also, let's not forget they were acussed not too long ago of using bad quality material such as tiles for the builiding of their theme p-I mean Astana. Even Nazarbayev pointed this angrily, as well for the sky-rocketing price of hotels there http://en.tengrinews.kz/markets/Kazakhstans-President-furious-over-prices-for-real-estate-in-Astana-24331/
zekekelso
I'm not sure the IOC thinks "spending lots of money" as a bad thing. So that's not really a risk (IMO).
Tony E Loves Architecture
Were you raped by a Kazakh? No and that's not even funny to joke about. It's so obvious that Beijing will be Hosting and Almaty won't. I knew Almaty stood no chance from the beginning of the Bidding. The only chance Almaty had was if Stockholm, Oslo, Krakow and Beijing all withdrew. Beijing is still Bidding. Beijing will Host.

Anyway, the IOC´s performances are blamed to scare away interesting cities from the race. I've got nothing against Almaty. I just know that they will have similar problems that Sochi 2014 has. We don't know if Almaty can deliver, we know Beijing can. We can't take risks with Bids like Almaty in these troubled times for the IOC.
