Three Cities Are Bidding to Host The World Games 2021

COLORADO SPRINGS (03/08/2014)

Three cities have submitted an official bid for the 11th edition of The World Games 2021. Birmingham (USA), Lima (Peru) and Ufa (Russia) applied to the International World Games Association (IWGA) before the expiry of the bidding phase on 31 July 2013 and are therefore eligible to host the multi-sport event in 2021. The announcement of the The World Games 2021 host city will be made at a press conference after the final round of presentations at the beginning of 2015. The contract with the future Host City will be ratified and signed at the 2015 IWGA Annual General Meeting in the spring.

The IWGA Evaluation Committee will now analyse the bids. After going through the documents submitted by the applicant cities, the committee will announce a short list of candidate host cities and visit those potential hosts to conduct on-site evaluation. The process will conclude with the selection of those Candidate Cities to be invited for a final presentation to the IWGA Board.

IWGA President José Perurena feels strongly that his impression that the multi-sport event - staged every four years since 1981 - is gaining more and more interest has been confirmed. ”We are looking forward to seeing how the applicant cities present themselves.”

José Perurena estimates that the costs of staging The World Games – which use existing infrastructure – are more than compensated by the new opportunities that being host of the multi-sport event offers to a city.

The World Games showcase more than 30 sports, such as Dance Sport, Squash, Tug of War, Sumo, Beach Handball and Water Ski. Approximately 4,500 athletes and officials from about 100 countries take part in The World Games. The athletes compete for gold medals in approximately 180 disciplines during the event. With Wroclaw in Poland as the current Host City, the 2017 Games will be staged once again in Europe. After Duisburg/Germany hosted the 2005 Games, the event moved to Asia and South America in 2009 and 2013 respectively.

I'm actually supporting Lima, Peru's Bid. I think Continental Games and Minor Multi Sport Games such as these are the best Peru will get. Russia has/is Hosting alot of Competitions, so maybe Peru can have a turn.

Cue Lima...counting down for a certain reaction already...

I don't know how far the IWGA is under Putin's influence, but Russia bidding these days is always something that shouldn't be disregarded, even if "only" with Ufa. I'm actually surprised they didn't put Kazan forward, that seemed to be the current fave for all kinds of events.

Lima Peru got this in the bag great event to follow up after the 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games and would be an great steps to host the Summer Olympics and Paralympics Games in 2028 or 2032.

Peru won't Host the Summer Olympics and Paralympics. This is the best it will be for them. Only Continental Games and minor Multi Sport Events will be Hosted by Peru. Get this dream out of Your mind, because Your going to be disappointed.

The Fact is, Lima isn't capable of Hosting a Summer Olympics. The World Games and Pan American Games are the Best they will get.

If Lima Peru does an great job on the Pan Ams and get's the World Games and does an great job on them and host the 2017 IOC Session and Congress then Lima Peru would have an very great chance to host the 2032 Summer Games. 2024 is likely to go to LA USA then 2028 back to Europe in Berlin Germany but Lima seems to be the city which will host the 2032 Summer Games.

So, GCL, if Lima will have hosted the 2017 IOC Session and then gets the 2032 SOG, how come Durban, which hosted the 2011 IOC Congress -- and which represents a HUGE continent's best hope, has been bypassed (by you) in the next few Olympics? Did the IOC and the African countries all of a sudden have amnesia about wanting to host and WIN even ONE Summer Olympic Games? Pls explain the gap.

Anyway, Hosting an IOC Session doesn't make a City capable of Hosting the Summer Olympics. Durban can Host the Summer Olympics because they have experience, they would take the Summer Olympics to Africa for the First Time and they have the Infrastructure from the 2010 Fifa World Cup, Hosted by South Africa. Peru doesn't have any of that. Peru doesn't have the Facilities or Infrastructure to Host the much larger Summer Olympics.

Durban isn't much more experienced then Lima. And if they are in a bid race past 2019, Lima will have the overwhelming edge in that category coming off of a Pan Am Games. Outside of a stadium, Durban also lacks any sort of Olympic caliber infrastructure. What they do have is a large plot of land ripe for development. I'm not trying to support GCL's rediculous claims that Lima will host within the next little while, but to suggest that they will lack any sort of experience or infrastructure in comparison to Durban is just wrong.

Okay...I'm just going to say it because not one else has...why the hell is Birmingham bidding? Like seriously what the F*ck does Birmingham have? I'm pulling for Lima

They had a whack job mayor a few years back that wanted to bid for the Olympics.

Hey, it's the World Games. It makes the host think they're something special and up their in the international spotlight with the Oly hosts. The rest of the world doesn't know they're on.

Damn Alabamians...they are almost as bad as Mississippians...

Well I understand that, but you would think there is some type of standard. At this rate Baton Rouge could bid for this crap and be taken seriously...

I have the impression that a significant proportion of the US members tend to believe that any event aside from the Olympic Games and their national leagues is a crap event and they're too good for anything else. It is a pity though, given the sports infrastructure of the American cities and the ease that would be for them to host many more World Championships and International competitions tightening their relations to the IFs and the broader international audience.

A PanAms, a YOG would send a nice message of renewed olympic intentions. Just look at how Toronto will be testing the waters in 2015.

Sure. A strategic retreat, IMO. Toronto will not stop at the 2015 Pan American Games. Birmingham won't go ahead of the World Games but a games there can show us a nice, contrived angle of the USA hosting small scale world events. We rarely see that.

And yet, Toronto is opting out of 2024, which seemed like good timing for a bid.

2024 is bad timing. 2028 or 2032 is the optimum time for them to bid. Unless a US city ends up winning, it was smart for Toronto to back out of this cycle.

A potential bid for 2024 is not dead in the water yet. Elections are in October and the possibility of bid can be brought sometime after. However 2024 probably isn't the best year anyways especially if Paris or any capable European city bids.
