OCA looks ahead to high-tech, legacy-focused Asian Games 2018

http://aroundtherings.com/site/A__58433/Title__OCA-looks-ahead-to-high-tech-legacy-focused-Asian-Games-2018/292/Articles

Quote

The Director General of the Olympic Council of Asia, Mr Husain Al Musallam, is looking forward to a high-tech Asian Games in Indonesia in 2018 – and a games that will leave a lasting legacy for co-host cities Jakarta and Palembang.

Speaking after the 5th OCA Coordination Committee meeting at the Mulia Hotel in Jakarta on Wednesday, Mr Al Musallam said the OCA’s 18th Asian Games would contribute to the development of the country in general.

“We have had a very successful meeting and received firm assurances from three leading ministries in the central government that Indonesia fully supports the 18th Asian Games in 2018,” said Mr Al Musallam.

“The government showed a high level of commitment to secure the success of the Asian Games. Three high-level ministries - finance, public works and human development and culture - gave their assurance and, moreover, their support of the citizens of Indonesia and the parliament, especially since it will be 56 years since Jakarta last hosted our Asian Games in 1962.”

Mr Al Musallam said the OCA expected a high-tech Asian Games due to the new technology available in 2018, as well as an event that will leave a strong legacy.

“We can see the Asian Games integrate with the city of Jakarta with a new airport terminal, a new ring road and Mass Railway Transport system. In addition to this, all the sports venues in Jakarta and Palembang are being renewed to the highest levels of the International Federations,” he said.

“The OCA expects 11,000 athletes to participate in the 18th Asian Games and 5,500 team officials – a total of 16,500 participants from our National Olympic Committees.

“The volunteer programme will start soon and produce 40,000 volunteers to be on duty during the Games.

“We are confident that Indonesia has the manpower, technology and experience to organise a successful Asian Games, and we will emphasise how to put all this together for a more international look.”

The OCA Director General summed up a number of points from the 5th OCA CC meeting:

SPORTS PROGRAMME

We have finalised 41 sports with the option of finding a solution for surfing, which will be in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The OCA wants to prepare the Asian surfers to be ready in terms of experience and to improve their level. We are studying minor technical issues with the International Surfing Federation and organising committee, especially concerning the venue and logistics involved.

HOST BROADCASTER AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND TIMING

We are at an advanced stage and soon the contracts will be signed for all three elements which are very important for the success of the Asian Games.

TRANSPORTATION

We are satisfied overall, but there is still a worry about traffic because 20 million people are on the move every day in Jakarta city.

ATHLETES’ VILLAGE

The work has already started and in both cities, Jakarta and Palembang, and will be finished at the end of 2017.

VENUES

The competition venues in Palembang are already there and are ready. In Jakarta they are in progress and the target will be November 2017. The test events are set for November 2017.

AIRPORT

The new terminal at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Jakarta has been completed and will be in operation soon. The OCA is satisfied with the air traffic control plan during the Asian Games as Jakarta is a very busy airport with 50 million passengers every year.

HIGHWAY AND MRT

The new Jakarta ring road and highway has been completed and work is in progress on the Mass Railway Transport line connecting the airport to the Athletes’ Village at Kemayoran. We expect this service to be completed by March 2018.

PALEMBANG

The co-host city – capital of South Sumatra – already has an Athletes’ Village and the expansion work is nearly complete. The roads are complete, the venues are complete. The organising committee will provide a certain number of free air flights to National Olympic Committees who have teams there on a daily basis during the games for the Chef de Mission and other officials.

JET SKI AND PARAGLIDING

The organising committee has confirmed that they will shoulder the cost of all the equipment internationally and locally for all participants.

*The OCA’s 18th Asian Games will run from August 18 to September 2, 2018.

President ‘Jokowi’ says 2018 Asian Games is a matter of pride

Jakarta, Indonesia, December 17, 2016: The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, has called for “maximum efforts” in the preparations for the Olympic Council of Asia’s 18th Asian Games in 2018. Writing in the first edition of the organising committee’s official magazine, Energy of Asia, “Jokowi” says there is no time to lose as Indonesia prepares to hold the continent’s largest multi-sport event for the first time since 1962.

“As President, I urge all preparations must proceed on time because it is a question of our pride and will underline Indonesia’s capability in hosting the Games,” he writes.

“For the success of the Games, the government of Indonesia focuses on three main topics, namely infrastructure readiness, the competitiveness of Indonesian athletes and transportation facilities between Jakarta and Palembang, the two cities that will be hosting the Asian Games.”

President Widodo said it was important to make progress in all aspects of preparation to avoid any obstacles in the countdown to the Asiad, which will run from August 18 to September 2, 2018. “That is why I have instructed to hold a weekly meeting to evaluate the progress of the preparations in order to pay attention to details, since the time is near.”

Describing the Asian Games as “a gigantic international event”, the President has instructed all related institutions and the organising committee to plan carefully and accelerate the development of infrastructure such as the new Terminal 3 at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, LRT and other transport networks, as well as the Athletes’ Village.

“I call on all parties to work quickly since there is still time to check and recheck. Hopefully this great event is held with maximum efforts,” he concluded. On December 2, President Widodo visited the Gelora Bung Karno sports complex in Senayan, Jakarta, and said the government had allocated Rp 3.5 trillion (USD 259 million) for renovation work, which is expected to be finished by November 2017.

OCA opens representative office in Jakarta

Jakarta, Indonesia, December 13, 2016: The Olympic Council of Asia held an Inauguration Ceremony for its representative office in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Tuesday evening. The office will assist in the smooth preparations for the OCA’s 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang in 2018 by providing a daily communications and operations hub between the organising committee INASGOC, the Indonesian Olympic Committee and the OCA.

The Director General of the OCA, Mr Husain Al Musallam, said: “This new office will definitely add value for the Olympic Movement in Asia and especially for the Asian Games in 2018 with close coordination with the organising committee.

“The inauguration of this representative office is a special occasion and will be a very positive step to show the cooperation between the OCA and the organising committee of the 18th Asian Games.” Mr Al Musallam said that the new office followed the strategic roadmap approved at the OCA General Assembly in Vietnam last September, when the OCA decided to open a series of offices in all five zones of the continent.

“The OCA has learned from past experiences how to have smooth continuation in our work and in our preparations for the youth and the Olympic Movement,” he added. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the OCA’s Hon. Life Vice President, Mr Wei Jizhong, said it was a very significant moment for the OCA and Jakarta.

“The preparations for the Asian Games are going smoothly, so we need close cooperation and close communication,” said Mr Wei. The OCA representative office is located at Plaza Asia in the Senayan district of the capital, close to the Gelora Bung Karno sports complex – the focal point of the 18th Asian Games.

It will be under the control of the OCA Vice President in charge of the 18th Asian Games, Mrs Rita Subowo, who said the Indonesian Olympic Committee and government had enjoyed close cooperation with the OCA since hosting the inaugural Asian Beach Games at Bali in 2008.

“Hopefully, after the Asian Games in 2018, Indonesia will be able to go to the next step – the World Beach Games and, who knows, the Olympic Games,” said Mrs Subowo.

On behalf of the government, Deputy IV of the Ministry for Youth and Sport, Gatot S. Dewa Broto, thanked Mrs Subowo for providing the office space and said it would lead to more intensive cooperation with less than one and a half years to go until the 18th Asiad, which will run from August 18 to September 2, 2018.

A tour of the offices followed the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and a press conference brought the inauguration to a close. Speaking at the press conference, Indonesian Olympic Committee and INASGOC President Erick Thohir said the new office showed the commitment of the OCA to the success of the Asian Games.

He also looked ahead to the 5th OCA Coordination Committee on Wednesday, when OCA representatives will meet with three ministers from key government departments on the sidelines of the meeting.

The Indonesian officials also included Imam S. Ernawi, Chairman of the Infrastructure Taskforce for the 18th Asian Games, and Ahmad Najib, Assistant Governor of South Sumatra, of which co-host city Palembang is the capital.

Jakarta to provide extra loan for Asian Games projects

Jakarta to provide extra loan for Asian Games projects

The Jakarta administration will provide additional funds for city-owned developer PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro) to cover the high costs of three projects ahead of the Asian Games in August 2018.

Acting Jakarta governor Sumarsono said on Wednesday that the city would give the company an extra Rp 1.95 trillion (US$146.25 million) through a regional loan scheme for the projects.

Jakpro has been tasked with building three projects, comprising a velodrome and equestrian facility in East Jakarta and light rail transit (LRT) from Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta to the velodrome. The LRT line will connect the competition venues.

“We will propose the loan in the revision of the 2017 city budget that currently is being discussed,” he said.

Sumarsono said the scheme would be easier to execute than proposing another capital injection. “We have committed to holding the event. Therefore, we will help the company as much as we can,” he said.

Jakpro estimates that the three projects will cost around Rp 5.9 trillion. The company received a capital injection from the city administration worth Rp 1 trillion in 2016 and will receive another Rp 1.95 trillion in 2017.

Jakpro president director Satya Heragandhi previously said the company would try to find a private loan to cover the Rp 2 trillion needed for this year’s costs.
