Asian Games in Jakarta

Acting Jakarta governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama has said that he plans to to propose Jakarta as the host city of the 2018 Asian Games.

The Asian Games is a multi-sporting event held every four years among athletes from across Asia. The first Asian Games was held in New Delhi, India, in 1951, while this year's games will be held in Incheon, South Korea, from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4.

"Jakarta once hosted the Asian Games back in 1962. I plan on proposing the capital city to become the host of the Asian Games in 2018," he said at City Hall in Central Jakarta on Friday, as reported by Antara news agency.

Ahok plans to travel to Kuwait in the near future to meet with the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) because he believes that Jakarta has a very good chance of becoming the next host country.

He added that if Jakarta was officially appointed as the next host city, it would be a tremendous boost to renovating much of the city's existing infrastructure, especially its sports facilities.

In addition to infrastructure, Ahok said that Jakarta also needed to improve its public transportation networks if it truly wanted to host the games.

"We hope that the construction of the mass rapid transit (MRT), the light rapid transit (LRT), loop lines for the electric trains, six toll roads and the improvement of the city's bus system will all be realized by 2016 or 2017," he said.

Furthermore, he said he hoped for the full support of the central government regarding the possibility of hosting the Asian Games 2018.

Well, that's not OCA's doing. Then, why should you bid for the Games knowing full well, they want to move it up to 2019 -- because OCA wants it to be in sync with the other continents -- for those Games to serve as qualifying for the 2020 Olympics? And here, a prospective host is asking a multi-national organization to take a back seat in its overall synchronization with other federations because you are having a domestic event? Then maybe Tokyo/Japan shouldn't host 2020 because they're having a monsoon that year? I never heard of such baloney.

Well, the OCA was probably desperate to find a host at such short notice.

I thought that...but that desperate to scale back on the bigger picture??

But if Surabaya was content to bid for the 2019 Games, now all of a sudden, the Indonesian gov't changes the calendar for OCA?? Would it even take place in the same season (as the elections)? And that'll mean that the various federations will still have to stage other competitions in 2019 to find the qualifying teams/athletes for Tokyo 2020 -- which means they will have to find a whole new set of hosts for the individual 2019 competitions as well??
