afiqnadzir
(CNN) — A Malaysia Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has crashed in eastern Ukraine, Russian news agency Interfax reported Thursday. Malaysia Airlines confirmed that it lost contact with MH17, and the flight’s last known position was over Ukrainian airspace, the airline said on Twitter. http://wqad.com/2014/07/17/malaysia-airlines-plane-crashes-in-ukraine/
StefanMUC
It's terrible. For the victims, for the airline yet again, but also for the continuation of the war (which it is in all but name) in Eastern Ukraine. A nightmare scenario.
Alexjc
Oh dear god. The news channels are going haywire. All airspace around the eastern Ukraine is now closed to all altitude levels. There was a limited level airspace closure before this tragedy and longhaul aircraft overflew the region well above airspace closure.
BTHarner
Truly sad. Before I heard this news I was thinking about today being the 18th anniversary of the TWA Flight 800 tragedy in which a group from a nearby high school were among the victims. Now others have lost loved ones and to them I extend my deepest sympathies.

Alexjc
US Officials have confirmed the flight was shot down, possibly by the deadly BUK missile. They confirmed a "very modern" tracking system lit up moments before a major catastrophic event occurred over the airspace MH17 was passing and dissappeared off radar. Awful. dave199
This is crazy. Ukraine is pointing the finger at the Russians and vice versa. The pictures from the crash site are immense. Fields of wreckage and bodies. Very sad and sickening.

Durban Sandshark
Really devastating. Terrible for the families and friends of those on that flight. Terrible year for Malaysian Airlines.
TorchbearerSydney
So sad for all the victims, their families, and Malaysia airlines and their staff. There are reports that a number of the world's leading AIDS specialists on the way to Melbourne for a major conference may have died as well. What a terrible loss. thatsnotmypuppy
As someone who flies Malaysian a lot (I get staff benefits through QANTAS and as a One World carrier we have reciprocal rights) I can say they are one of the most professional and safety conscious carriers out there. I was woken early this morning with the news that a number of QANTAS staff were booked to fly home to Melbourne and Brisbane from Amsterdam with KL being the stop over point (MH17 was scheduled to refuel in KL and continue onto Melbourne under another flight number - same plane). In a twist of fate due to the overbooking of MH17 it appears all of them went through customs, checked bags and were at the gate waiting to board when told they would not be able to fly due to overbooking (before anyone says anything their bags were not on board at that point - staff bags go on last these days for this exact reason - saves time taking them off if the staff do not get on). They were re-accomodated on the Cathay Pacific Amsterdam to HKIA flght instead and some on the later KLM flight (who have codeshare agreements with Malaysian even though they are not One World) with connections back to Australia tonight on QANTAS. I've been told as soon as they stepped off the flights at HKIA they were taken into rooms and told what has happened by locally based QANTAS and Malaysian staff (their flights left Amsterdam before or just as the crash happened and for obvious reasons no mention was made mid-flight). Needless to say I am relieved as two of the Melbourne ladies are quite good frends of mine and there had been no official word they weren't on MH17 as planned. Sadly many have lost their lives - in completely barbaric conditions. It has been one helll of a morning but please do not blame Malaysian for this. They are having a horror year and are a really good, quality airline. I really can't add much more as we are being briefed with dribs and drabs of info at this end. Olympic Fan Darcy
I find chatting about Malaysian Airlines irrelevant. More saddened for the families and for the people that perished. Unfortunate circumstances. Seems quite a few on board were top researches for AIDS and were heading to Australia for the AIDS conference. Hearing that video between the people that shot it down and the Russian separatist is just chilling. Awful.
Sir Rols
So sad for all the victims, their families, and Malaysia airlines and their staff. There are reports that a number of the world's leading AIDS specialists on the way to Melbourne for a major conference may have died as well. What a terrible loss. Yeah, there's reports out that more than 100 of the passengers may have been delegates who were en-route to the conference. Confirmed us the president of the International AIDS group, and some really major and important researchers in the area of HIV-AIDS research. Irreplaceable losses and knowledge. There was talk earlier this year I might be doing some coverage at the conference (though that didn't eventuate). I don't want to take away from any of the other victims of this event, but it really is a compounded tragedy amongst the overall horror.
Alexjc
The finger of blame is slowly but surely turning towards Russia. Igor Girkin, the russian separatist has been recorded gloating they had shot down an aircraft moments after the incident. Russian president Vladimir Putin has blamed the "failure of peace" in the region for yesterday's tragic events. A typical response. Still...why aircraft are allowed to fly over war zones clearly lean towards commercial sense rather than common. The whole region is on the "great circle route" to Asia. runningrings
Not booking with Malaysian Airlines anytime soon. This could have been Qantas, Singapore Airlines or any other airline that flies that route over Ukraine. MH has suffered a chain of events of a Titanic proportion. Speaking of ships- MH17 could bear a scary similarity to the Lusitiania, and the outcomes that had. People here in Australia are fuming at Russia. I imagine its a similar and stronger tune in Netherlands.

baron-pierreIV
This is really horrible. Leaves me numb from the barbaric waste of life of innocent people. Numbskull FIFA really better rethink their commitment for 2018 whether or not Muddah-f*cka Russia had a direct hand in it or not. Those are their groupies who fired the shots. More detachedly, an analyst on CNN said that the jet was forced to move to the more northerly and tragic air corridor because of a lot of storms and lightning in its more southerly route...and thus was not expected on that route; therefore mistaken as a Ukranian Air Force jet by those separatist murderers. (I really don't know why Kiev just doesn't cut its losses and let that region go and negotiate for other concessions from Russia. It's not worth hanging on to eastern Ukraine as part of that country today.)
