Who cares if performers are world famous or not? As long as they work for the show, in the moment, that's what matters most. These ceremonies are about cities showing the world the face THEY want

Omg guys, u need to sotp! It's boring how you're jugding the hole cerimony just by pictures. LETS RIO SHINE without yours negative comments. I'm loving everything, it's so colorful, so alive. They are

I watched quite a lot of the videos and pictures you guys thankfully posted here, and I must say, that I'm looking very much forward to the opening ceremony. What I have seen so far is surprisingly im

I loved it. It was very down to earth, classical and elegant ceremony. They didn't showed off like fucked up countries where people live as bad as Brazil such as Athens and Beijing did. Hiding their embarrassing reality. They broke the taboo of poverty.

The image of the games are one of the best ever. Marana stadium looked superb. The only didn't i didn't fancy at all, was the pace of the music. It kept people not so cheerful. More Samba was needed instead of Bossa Nova which relaxes. Rio gave a good lesson to Athens, Beijing and Sochi.

Ooooookay. Looks like the IOC is getting heavy-handed with YouTube.

Let's see how long these last. First, one from a good series by user apertodemao:

Second, the final fireworks (I'm trying to find one where the drunk spectators are going ape crazy just off-camera, but no luck so far):

It's a good thing they didn't have Gisele scale those buildings in her high heels.  She surely would've fallen and killed herself -- and we wouldn't have wanted that.

BTW, is she really from Ipanema?  I bet she's NOT!!

UK and Canadian versions of the 360 "VR" Opening Ceremony sampler (really intended to be viewed with a headset, of course- apps available from broadcasters who are running the videos). Aroung 100 hours of live 360 video to be broadcast during the Games.

Reviews of the outfits worn by athletes are starting to come out. More or less what I also thought. South Korea uniforms were pretty much my favorite ones of the night. And people going crazy over the Tonga flagbearer.

USA and Germany outfits are being bashed once again by social media :S looks like they're going to have to try a bit harder for Pyeongchang and Tokyo.

Despite the shirt looking like the Russian flag the way the stripe colors were produced, I think their outfits were great!

Canada and team GB the best? lmfao f**k no. Those jackets on the men from team GB are awful and they look like they're swimming in it, while that outfit that Canada is wearing looks like it was designed by the douchebag that is Justin Bieber.

BTW, posted this video on the reviews thread but thought I'd post it here just for the hell of it. John Oliver from Last Week Tonight did a hilarious review of the opening ceremony

Question about the medal ceremonies.  Haven't seen one. Any videos? I guess they are at the end of the event, not in the evening like Sochi.

One minor detail we were all too drunk to think about during the OC: Britain's "head of state" at the ceremony, at least as far as TV coverage was concerned, was Sir Craig Reedie. And of course, what he's actually head of, is WADA. More of ye olde subtle British politicking?

Anyway, Rio de Janeiro has truly inspired me just as Barcelona did. Both didn't display all that technology show off that other cities need to inspire and failed on me. And honestly, these scenes of urban architecture and nature such as Barcelona, Athens and Rio are keeping my enthusiasm on for the Olympics. Ironically, all of them come from "developing countries". I can imagine what Istanbul and Cape Town might offer for the games, romantically and nostalgically talking. Mexico City and Sarajevo were touching. New frontiers are needed to keep inspiring (me, at least).

Even the cauldron and the sculpture are already gone.

So no cauldron for the Soccer finals/Closing/Paralympics? Or....... what? Is it being moved somewhere else around the stadium like London?

As the Maracana will be out the public gaze until 16 August, they could just be storing the cauldron to keep it in good condition.

Top 10 reasons the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremonies looked cheap.

960.jpg

No. 10: "We can't afford a whole orchestra, so let's just use some of the string section and a guy with an acoustic guitar for the anthem."
No 9: "We don't have a choir, so we'll just get Paulinho da Viola to sing the first stanza, with the audience mumbling the second one."
No. 8: "You're not paying attention in French class? OK, the French will have to be half assed then."
No 7: "I would have loved more cities to have been presented in the polar ice caps melting video, but we simply can't afford to do more animations of more cities."
No 6: "You can only have one aerial stunt. so make it good. OK then, it'll be the "flying" of 14-bis by Santos Dumont, even if it will be mostly video trickery."
No 5: "We're reusing Carnival props and costumes from this year, but there's not enough room in Maracanã to bring in the floats."
No 4: "Bring out your 70's Afro-wigs, we need them for the Samba segment."
No 3: "We built this huge block/favela stage end but we'll only show 20 minutes of it, tops."
No 2: "Forget a massive fireworks display, leave that for the Closing Ceremony where three quarters of that 6 million dollar budget can go for it. Heck,
the Japanese will finance their own handover ceremony anyways."
No 1: "We have an unused soup pot from the Athlete's Village, that can be our cauldron!"
