Actually, just one afternoon -- the afternoon before dress rehearsal.  And the back-up flame is actually lit by assistants -- not the designated High Priestess.

Meant to be a joke Baron lol, just saying a lot of preparation goes into it and the flame doesn't even touch  the cauldron

Who cares if performers are world famous or not? As long as they work for the show, in the moment, that's what matters most. These ceremonies are about cities showing the world the face THEY want

Omg guys, u need to sotp! It's boring how you're jugding the hole cerimony just by pictures. LETS RIO SHINE without yours negative comments. I'm loving everything, it's so colorful, so alive. They are

I watched quite a lot of the videos and pictures you guys thankfully posted here, and I must say, that I'm looking very much forward to the opening ceremony. What I have seen so far is surprisingly im

I think the transmission will be shitt. Does the height of the stadium bother anyone else? Looks so short and too much going on with the metal structures =\

Disappointing . It seems to be made of people or vegetation. Also this outline that forms a sort of avenue near the rings is crooked ( believe it will be straight to August 5 ) but it is unnecessary . After the amazing rings London , Beijing and Athens ... we have this in Rio . The arenas are beautiful inside, the Olympic Park is getting pretty out too. But the ceremony still worries me ... maybe something very simple . The good news is the fireworks ! I love fireworks! How nice it will be enough!

I dont think we should judge how this will come out considering it wasn't even taken during a full rehearsal and we have no idea if this will be the main olympic rings thing (since strong rumours point they will be formed in Copacabana).  Same for the crooked look of the outline. This seems to most likely be the parade of nations, though.

I'm excited for the fireworks, they're using much more than both London and Beijing's so its safe to asume Copacabana will be used as well for them?

I have this feeling this is going to be a very basic, cheap, retrograde and amateurish opening ceremony ala LA84. I hope I'm wrong.

Diss LA84 all you can, WITHOUT what was achieved then for only $5 million, you wouldn't be having the $62 million Beijing, $65 million Sochi and $95 million Baku 2015 openings,  If Brazil's show turns out to be less than unique, I think it will be OK (I can't believe I am actually saying this   ) because at some point, the level has to top off.  You can only do so much with heads rising out of water, or inverted islands floating by, or fire-rocks rising from the stadium floor.  Plus, the host country's economic and political climates are rather borderline and touchy, so a not-nearly spectacular opening ceremony wouldn't be the worst thing.  And if anything, it will be the Brazilian political scene and the Russian bans that will be the dominant stories by Opening time.

Yes .

I believe que for the fireworks will use Copacabana or even the Olympic Park or the avenue que leads from the Maracana to the other pot .

To focus on Maracana and Maracanazinho probably the organization will drop sequentially from beginning to end of the ceremony ( laughs ) .

The idea of the parade of athletes have my support ... it is a boring time of the ceremony. It would be nice to bet on more artistic presentations .

Eu tenho esse sentimento é que isto vai ser uma cerimônia muito básico, barato, retrógrada e amador abertura ala LA84. Espero que eu esteja errado.

Yes, it is my fear !

Something so basic is shameful.

Do something worthwhile to see ... because they do not want to lose four hours of my life with a basic show.

Please be great Rio de Janeiro !

..or it will be the greatest ceremony ever maybe? How can it not be great with all the experience of Rio has with costume parades etc?

...or maybe they spent all their ceremony budget to develop a time machine that will take the stadium and audience back to 1984 so a ceremony that would be sub-par in 2016 would look like something new and important?

Lol, people are pulling their hairs right now after seeing that pic when it wasn't even taken during a full rehearsal and we basically know nothing of it (even if it hints it will be related to the Parade of Nations). Remember Sydney 2000 had at least 3 representations of the Olympic Rings (Man from Snowy River, Arrivals and Heroes Live Forever, respectively)

I suggest people don't jump to conclusions, at least until the full rehearsal is done next weekend. Then we will know for sure how the quality of this show will be.

When I see the interviews of the directors of the ceremony . It seems that the show will be a moral or philosophical lesson.

We need something big . Incidentally, the OC is the time that is marked in the future , in 2020 when the channels are disseminating promotional to Tokyo , we see images of the Opening of Rio ? Or will we be confused with Los Angeles 84 ?

London 2012 was not sumptuous but it was worthy of the Olympics that followed Beijing.

I do not expect Rio take Beijing as a reference, but should not take the 80 and 90 .

Beijing (and London too for the Paralympic closing) had fireworks at multiple locations across the city. With an entire forest between the ceremonial stadium and the Olympic Park, Rio could really benefit from a similar approach!

And a Sochi-style parade of nations alternating left and right half-laps would be a smart thing to do.

A última coisa mais ridícula que se pode imaginar seria uma lição de moral ou filosófica do Rio e ou o COI, a não ser é claro que eles estão indo para a comédia pura.

Do not doubt.

From what I read about the bet the ceremony will be :

' A ceremony to show the diversity of Brazilians, and as our nation could live with diversity ' .

' Will have a segment for the Indians , another for Afro-Brazilians , one for European immigrants , a lot of Brazilian music (which is not necessarily the music heard by most people ) .'

All very simple , focusing on dance and etc.

Something in the style of presentation of Brazil at the end of London 2012 .

If I were the organization bet on World show the following message:

'Hey world, are different from what you think of us ... are modern and as good as you.'

What is everyone complaining about? RELAX!!! Give Rio some space. Beijing completely messed all of you up when it comes to expectations of an opening ceremony. I remember the organizers of London were definitely trying to lower expectations of the OC because Beijing was so incredulous. That's why they adopted the approach of reveal as much as you can before air time in order to temper expectations. Rio already told you all, this is not going to be the budget of London or Beijing so calm down.

To be honest I feel where Rio will try to capitalize is on pure human energy. If you've ever been to Rio you'll know exactly what I am talking about. There is a life, an energy to that city that can not be replicated the vibrancy of the people is almost tangible. From the pictures of the performers I can tell in their faces that they definitely tapped into that. now it is to see whether it comes across like that on tv

I'm remaining calm. I don't want to jump to conclusions until I see more things when the Dress Rehearsal happens. After that we'll have permission to be either excited or scared.
