mattygs
It's not a bad ideia at all. The favelas had started on the begining of the Republic, part of that during the big reform of Rio in the early 1900'. The favelas are part of Rio's history. Also we have the culture of the favelas, it's not all about poorness. The RAP and Carioca Funk comes from favelas. Also the urban culture. Why would it be a bad ideia? But I don't really think they are gonna work with that. I get the favela concept as a part of the ceremony, there is no reason they should not make an appearance at some stage. Im just not so sure about basing the set design of the ceremony around it. As iconic as they may be, the set design still has to function for the entire ceremonies, including protocol. There needs to be some kind of gravitas and formality about it as well as being a creative space. The Tor in London worked that perfectly, as did all the stage designs for Sydney and Barcelona. Im just not so sure how a colourful yet grungy representation of favela's would work in that respect. The closing though is a totally different kettle of fish. Of course, I also didn't understand how a segment based around the NHS would work, so Im open to be proven wrong.

baron-pierreIV
Minimalist presentation? Or a clean floor for projections?
Ikarus360
Some details unveiled for the Paralympics opening http://www.lance.com.br/rio2016/abertura-dos-jogos-paralimicos-rio-tera-atracoes-samba.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter Artist Vik Muniz to make a live work during the show. There will also be lots of samba. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vik_Muniz
Blazerblaz3
I feel like the white is just a base for projections. I'm sure there's going to be lots of green and rio colors built up ontop of it.

JMarkSnow2012
leociriaco Instangram From that it looks as if the white may just be an undercoat. But bright blue for the notorious stacked cuboids? Are they reversing everything so the sea looks like a mountain?

Rob.
what about one big divided screen? With government supporters on one side and opponents on the other?
luizfernandobr45
From Paralympic's OC. It's in Rio 2016 official website. I really liked the propost of the directors.
baron-pierreIV
Oh yeah!! Carmen Miranda hat, here we come!!! Or is that a mock-up for the 7m cauldron???
Conor15
I'd love to see a Carmen Miranda reference. With a few of her songs featured. After all, she did make Brazil and its culture well-known back in the 40s.

Ikarus360
That stage looks really chaotic. I'm starting to agree with some here they will most likely represent the Favelas. Though why are they coating the boxes with blue colors?

Durban Sandshark
Favelas certainly to me from the looks of this. I could add they may offer LED/LCD characteristics. That segment might be where we could see the typical local Opening Ceremony kid, representing the Brazilian youth, comes from as a centerpiece. Ikarus360
Maybe they will project lights onto the boxes? Now that you mention it, I just took a closer look at those structures.Looks like they're actually big screens and not color coating. Already looks like a very innovating idea. Conor15
So that means they could put those screens into good use like London did with the LEDs on the stadium seats. Like they could put up the Sugarloaf Mountain onto the screens or something like it.

baron-pierreIV
The boxes will obviously glow different colors and projections; and will be in action when the events on the main floor are transitioning.
Ikarus360
So it's pretty much a futuristic version of the human screens you used to see at 70's-early 90's opening ceremonies through the world. I wonder if people who are sitting at the sides will be able to see the images depicted well or if only those looking at the front (and the TV broadcast) will be able to show it properly. I hope they find an idea to solve that.
baron-pierreIV
The boxes will obviously project all the faces that make up probably the most multi-racial society on the planet. I think that's one of the themes of the OC.
