The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, scheduled for August 5, at the Maracana, will address the history of the Brazilian people. This was the theme chosen by the organizers, which, contrary to what was done in London 2012 and Beijing 2008, avoided using the ceremony to highlight the country itself and will focus on the formation of their society, according to the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo on Monday. With creativity, but without Chinese pom or the Britsish technlogy , the event will send a clear message: that immigration is positive.

The ceremony, which will be directed by Fernando Meirelles, Andrucha Waddington, Daniela Thomas and Rosa Magalhaes, will highlight the indigenous origins, the arrival of Europeans, the African slaves and the Asian to the country. The theme was enthusiastically received by the UN, which in recent months has made a broad campaign against right-wing and xenophobic movements, with governments closing borders and the worst refugee crisis since the Second World War.

In a time when political parties and candidates like Donald Trump, the United States, gaining ground with proposals to build walls, the UN and the IOC estimate that the message that Brazil will be the world "powerful."

The Olympic flame passed through UN headquarters this weekend at an event that was attended by the Secretary-General of the organization, the South Korean Ban Ki Moon. "We want to send a message of hope to the world. Sport builds bridges and creates no walls. What we share is greater than what divides us," said the IOC president, the German Thomas Bach.

The organizing committee does not give details about the ceremony. In its latest statement, the organization said that one of his priorities at the moment is the party of the test. "In May, we started in earnest In the cast that will perform choreographies we already leave the Maracana ready:. Have to cover the grass and set the stage," said Leonardo Caetano, director of ceremonies of Rio 2016.

I was wondering whether they would release any details on the ceremony. Four years ago yesterday I started my 1st rehearsal for the London 2012 ceremony - so am imagining that Rio will have started rehearsals by now? Also we moved into the stadium at the end of May - so am imagining that this will be the same for Rio - so they must have started preparations in the Maracana? Also I seem to remember that Danny Boyle released some images of what the staging would be like at this time. So perhaps Rio may start to release more details now?

That was Boyle's style. Rio is/was in the hands of Ballich (and Birch) who adhere more to the 'secrecy' rules than Boyle's team did. (Besides, we all know that Carnaval will feature somewhere in there -- Opening and/or Closing. But we'll be getting unauthorized sneak-peeks I am sure.

Got me thinking again: will we hear in the Parade of Nations some of that MPB and bossa nova music mix that holds a strong cult following in music outside of Brazil? London of course had British music and artists with strong nods to London--to numerous to mention here but some examples include West End Girls, Heroes, Rolling In Deep, and Staying Alive. With the greater adherence towards secrecy under Birch and Ballich as opposed to Boyle, they may like to surprise us with the music about to be used, Torino of course used largely disco classics starting with Chic's Good Times. We might hear Milton De Nascimento, Seu Jorge, cult faves Cansei Sur Sexy (CSS), Luisa Maita, Virginia Rosa, Aline de Lima, Gilberto Gil, maybe some Heitor Villa-Lobos, and maybe even some Brazilian rap. Then again, we could again get an original composition for the parade with a techno DJ--like in Sochi--who may incorporate Brazilian music influences into the techno. DJ Tiesto's in Athens was all entirely from his own album Parade of Nations including the track Heroes.

Better yet, YouTube had barely got off the ground in 2008 (and was presumably firewalled in China anyway) and Instagram wasn't founded until October 2010. By 2012, spying on Opening Ceremony preparations was easy, and leaking details of rehearsals was easy. Hence #SAVETHE SURPRISE, and hence Boyle's drip-feed of information in hopes of keeping the British press onside. It wasn't enough for some of the slimier papers, but it just about did the job.

Now remote controlled drones are easily available. They wouldn't be permitted to fly over the Olympic Stadium in London, but I don't know what the law is in Rio.

Depends when it was shot, Coldplay played there in early April so it could be the setup for them?

A slow paced and soft version of an anthem is not an entirely bad thing. I liked the Canadian anthem at the handover for the Pan Am Games. (go to 5:15)

Now I hope there is music accompanying it. I guess some people are dissapointed because they expected a more powerful and louder version. We might have it for the closing.

^^ That was a grim moment, though. The airplane which crashed in the middle of the games at Sao Paulo, so the raising of the flag was in memory of the victims.

Also I have a weird feeling that they might try to tie the Tokyo 2020 handover with the numerous japanese diaspora in Japan (specially at Sao Paulo). It would be a nice touch if a chorus of japanese-brazilians performed Kimigayo, though i'm just assuming stuff.

The news say the OCOG confirms his participation but he will NOT sing the anthem.
