These are just some of the ingredients commonly seen at Olympic and Paralympic Games opening and closing ceremonies. With a worldwide audience of billions, they provide some of the most exciting moments of the Games – the athletes’ parade, arrival of the Olympic torch and lighting of the Olympic cauldron. It will be no different at the Rio 2016 Games, and behind the scenes 2,000 volunteers will ensure everything runs smoothly. They will fulfil various roles in costume design, make-up and hairstyling for a cast of thousands, along with providing support for guests and help with set assembly. (Want to play your part? Apply here.) “Volunteers will get a real taste of what it’s like to work on big events in show business,” said Rio 2016 ceremonies specialist Maria Ilka. “The Olympic and Paralympic Games opening and closing ceremonies bring together thousands of people on-stage and in the wings, working side-by-side with the great professionals of the entertainment industry.” Ceremonies volunteers will work in three areas – creative, technical and operations – with many roles to be played by aspiring producers during the opening, closing and medal ceremonies. Creative roles include costume designers, make-up artists, hair stylists and casting assistants. On the technical side, volunteers will help build and assemble stage sets and scenery, as well as helping the various teams communicate effectively. Operations assistants will ensure that everything runs smoothly, dealing with accreditations and making sure everyone involved is in the right place at the right time, both during rehearsals and the show itself. At the award ceremonies for winning athletes, volunteers will carry the medals and bouquets, and accompany athletes, helping to ensure they are prepared for their big moment. To be a volunteer, you need to be 18 years old by February 2016 and available to work during the period of the Games. Registrations close on 15 December so don’t miss out, sign up here. Be in the cast… Volunteers who are mad about performance art and want to show off their talents will have the opportunity to become members of the Rio 2016 ceremonies cast through a special process. Auditions are scheduled for 2015, but you can register now and we will let you know when we the auditions begin. JMarkSnow2012
A couple of longer videos from the first part of the show. Towards the end of the first one, note how the parkour looks from a "wrong" angle:
olympiaki-agones
I loved it. It was very down to earth, classical and elegant ceremony. They didn't showed off like fucked up countries where people live as bad as Brazil such as Athens and Beijing did. Hiding their embarrassing reality. They broke the taboo of poverty. The image of the games are one of the best ever. Marana stadium looked superb. The only didn't i didn't fancy at all, was the pace of the music. It kept people not so cheerful. More Samba was needed instead of Bossa Nova which relaxes. Rio gave a good lesson to Athens, Beijing and Sochi.
JMarkSnow2012
Ooooookay. Looks like the IOC is getting heavy-handed with YouTube. Let's see how long these last. First, one from a good series by user apertodemao: Second, the final fireworks (I'm trying to find one where the drunk spectators are going ape crazy just off-camera, but no luck so far):

She surely would've fallen and killed herself -- and we wouldn't have wanted that. BTW, is she really from Ipanema? I bet she's NOT!! Bezzi
No. She is not even carioca. She was born in Rio Grande do Sul State. Aroung 100 hours of live 360 video to be broadcast during the Games.

More or less what I also thought. South Korea uniforms were pretty much my favorite ones of the night. And people going crazy over the Tonga flagbearer. USA and Germany outfits are being bashed once again by social media :S looks like they're going to have to try a bit harder for Pyeongchang and Tokyo. Despite the shirt looking like the Russian flag the way the stripe colors were produced, I think their outfits were great! Canada and team GB the best? lmfao f**k no. Those jackets on the men from team GB are awful and they look like they're swimming in it, while that outfit that Canada is wearing looks like it was designed by the douchebag that is Justin Bieber. BTW, posted this video on the reviews thread but thought I'd post it here just for the hell of it. John Oliver from Last Week Tonight did a hilarious review of the opening ceremony

JMarkSnow2012
One minor detail we were all too drunk to think about during the OC: Britain's "head of state" at the ceremony, at least as far as TV coverage was concerned, was Sir Craig Reedie. And of course, what he's actually head of, is WADA. More of ye olde subtle British politicking?

olympiaki-agones
Anyway, Rio de Janeiro has truly inspired me just as Barcelona did. Both didn't display all that technology show off that other cities need to inspire and failed on me. And honestly, these scenes of urban architecture and nature such as Barcelona, Athens and Rio are keeping my enthusiasm on for the Olympics. Ironically, all of them come from "developing countries". I can imagine what Istanbul and Cape Town might offer for the games, romantically and nostalgically talking. Mexico City and Sarajevo were touching. New frontiers are needed to keep inspiring (me, at least).
