Rio 2016 looking for 2,000 ‘show business’ volunteers to work on Olympic and Paralympic Games ceremonies Make-up artists, costume designers and wardrobe assistants among the roles for opening and closing ceremonies and medal presentations

Major international pop stars, hip-hop and ballet dancers mixing it up with circus performers, spectacular fireworks and the best athletes in the world. These are just some of the ingredients commonly seen at Olympic and Paralympic Games opening and closing ceremonies. With a worldwide audience of billions, they provide some of the most exciting moments of the Games – the athletes’ parade, arrival of the Olympic torch and lighting of the Olympic cauldron.

It will be no different at the Rio 2016 Games, and behind the scenes 2,000 volunteers will ensure everything runs smoothly. They will fulfil various roles in costume design, make-up and hairstyling for a cast of thousands, along with providing support for guests and help with set assembly. (Want to play your part? Apply here.)

“Volunteers will get a real taste of what it’s like to work on big events in show business,” said Rio 2016 ceremonies specialist Maria Ilka. “The Olympic and

Paralympic Games opening and closing ceremonies bring together thousands of people on-stage and in the wings, working side-by-side with the great professionals of the entertainment industry.”

Ceremonies volunteers will work in three areas – creative, technical and operations – with many roles to be played by aspiring producers during the opening, closing and medal ceremonies.

Creative roles include costume designers, make-up artists, hair stylists and casting assistants. On the technical side, volunteers will help build and assemble stage sets and scenery, as well as helping the various teams communicate effectively. Operations assistants will ensure that everything runs smoothly, dealing with accreditations and making sure everyone involved is in the right place at the right time, both during rehearsals and the show itself.

At the award ceremonies for winning athletes, volunteers will carry the medals and bouquets, and accompany athletes, helping to ensure they are prepared for their big moment.

To be a volunteer, you need to be 18 years old by February 2016 and available to work during the period of the Games. Registrations close on 15 December so don’t miss out, sign up here.

Be in the cast…

Volunteers who are mad about performance art and want to show off their talents will have the opportunity to become members of the Rio 2016 ceremonies cast through a special process. Auditions are scheduled for 2015, but you can register now and we will let you know when we the auditions begin.

I dont agree the opening and the closing ceremonies of the Olympics in Rio will be like the World Cup. In the World Cup the ceremonies have just some minutes because the best attraction is the match, not the ceremonies.

Will be like the World Cup Final or better...

world_cup_final.jpg

IMAGE FROM FIFA TV

is the final available on YouTube? I haven't seen it yet.

And it is rather insulting to say that the ceremonies will be "like" the world cup ceremonies considering that the opening ceremony was just disastrous. WC opening ceremony is severely limited since the stadium hosts the opening match about an hour after the OC, so they can't really put too much mass on the field or risk screwing up the grass.

Some print screens of the presentation of Rio 2016 in the raising of the flags in the closing ceremony of London 2012.

I believe that this presentation is more similar to what will be the Rio ceremonies in 2016.

Yeah, I found the video of the closing ceremony here.

That doesn't work for me, but found it on Youtube, or at least I think this is it.

If this is it, it's almost as bad as the opening ceremony. The only thing I liked about it is the the hot thick guy who was in the German soccer outfit. The other one, no thanks.

Please send me a good opening/closing ceremony of the World Cup

According to Lance! newspaper, the concept of the ceremonies is done, and this month the organising committee will present it to IOC for aproval during the Coordenation Comition visit.

Here you go -- IMHO, one of the best ceremonies, World Cup or otherwise, for a Closing.

I dont see nothing really interessing in this cerymony. Just a lot of lights, its the only thing differente of the opening/closing cerimony of the World Cup in 2014.

What about the opening cerimony of the World Cup in 2010. Seems really similar with the ceremonies of the World Cup in Brazil, r the South African creativity grows at night? lol

Well, ever heard of "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"? You asked for one; I gave you one. Like everything in life, it's really how each individual person assesses it. You don't like it; fine. Suit yourself. Next time, just don't ask to be shown one -- and then dismiss it.

Dont worry guys, the ceremonies wont be like those big trainwrecks of the 2014 World Cup. That was just Franco Dragone on a very uninspired day (or should I say days) and they did a mistake hiring him for that show. Luckily they're not going to take part on the olympic ceremonies.

Wow- I never saw the closing of the 2010 World Cup- I think it was beautiful. Much better than the opening.

Oh yeah, it was as spectacular as one could get on a space hampered by many limitations; by a country which hadn't done much of these huge spectaculars and where one's imagination was the other limitation. The 2010 Closing too was produced by a local company, VWV Productions with help from Jack Morton Prods..

I just think the World Cup and the Olympic Games are really different events. Both are huge and was host by Brazil, but dont means the cerimonies will be similar.

Ok...

Well they are really different events because they ARE different events. World cup only focuses on one sports while the Olympics features several. And the Olympics is more worldly in athletic participation and the World Cup is restricted to only 32 countries participating.

Also when speaking about the ceremonies, the opening and closing ceremonies for Olympic games are not severely restricted in what they can do. Because the opening and closing ceremony of the World Cup games precedes the first and final game of the tournament, they cannot a lot of mass on the floor because it will ruin the field for the players. Plus they have only about an hour to clean up after each ceremony so there is also that to take into account.

I hope they go really Earthy. Like beautiful, elaborate costumes depicting Brazilian landscapes to the tune of cosmic female vocals. And then BANG! Start the drumming and whistle blowing to symbolize urbanization. Just a midnight idea.

I agree fully with you.

Anyway that would will be a bit similar with the Pandemonium in the opening of London 2012? No?

London did a very literal interpretation. I'm talking about something more artsy. And for most OCs the ideas are the same, but executed differently.

I think the opening ceremony needs starts showing the nature, wildlife and the natives brazilians, Later the urbanization of the city and all brazil, the favelas, samba, etc. But of course not like the Pandemonium, that was confusing.

Pretty much you mean a ceremony similar to that of Sydney's in 2000. It's my all-time favorite ceremony. It started with Deep Sea Dreaming, which is a representation of the ocean life off the coast of Australia, then Awakening that included the native aboriginals, then went into nature, then the Tin Symphony which was the beginning of the colonization of Australia followed by Arrivals, and then ending with an urban tapdancing routine.

I do think that Rio should definitely focus on the natural beauty of the country for their opening ceremony rather than do something as mainstream as London, which I found pretty damn disappointing, with the exception of Pandemonium and the tribute to the victims of 7/7/05 bombings.
