Rio de Janeiro 2016 Ceremonies.

Recommended Posts

First you it is necessary to understand that the military regime in Brazil is a very "ticklish" subject. This regime has finished very little time ago, in the decade of 80, most of my family witnessing it. Many people die and were tortured in this regime, including the current president of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, and it will certainly be in the ceremonies.
I think it should be done album tribute to the dead and those who desapareceram during the dictatorship. I think something like a scenario would be a horror movie. And also not talk about it would be like a hole in Brazilian history.

Uhmmm ... did you see images of the concentration camps in Berlin 1936? Stalinist purges in Moscow 1980? Well, how about the colonels in Greece who threw out the monarchy? Tibetan repression in Beijing? KGB doings in Sochi? Think again.

The thunderbird (and primarily representing the Civil War and the path of destruction that followed in its path) and temporary military dictatorships are different. What would it accomplish? OC's are a celebration of the Games and the host country putting its best foot forward. What would your idea do? C'mon....

I think Ceremonies will have no political content. Probably, even the mention to the President's presence at the stadium will be very carefully studied to avoid what happened to Lula during the Pan Americam Games' Opening Ceremony, in 2007, and to Dilma herself in São Paulo, during Fifa's 2014 WC inauguration match. IMO, the whole Opening Ceremony will focus Rio de Janeiro's history and culture. Of course, some aspects of modern Brazil will be shown ( we must not forget we are talking about the greatest opportunity to sell the country and the city to the world and the Games themselves are nothing but the perfect setting Brazil has paid to do so). Like Baron very appropriately mentioned, there will be no space for the dark side because it is supposed to be kept hideaway, as it happens to happen anywhere, anytime.

The problem is not the president or the brazilians like or not of her. The problem is the military regime is too young. Is like make a presention about the nazism in the cerimomnies of 1964 with the jews wacthing.

Atop of that, a good bunch of lunatics are asking for a return of the military regime during the recent "protests", a mere 3 months after the publishing of the final report on the National Truth Comission, which revealed the extent of widespread violations, forced disappearances, torture and killings of thousands of people.

To have and act featuring dictatorship would send an important, but way too strong message in a very volatile moment of political debate here. A tribute to victims of the various dictatorships we had, slavery and genocide in this country could be done in an elegant, metaphorical way though, like the Thunderbird in Atlanta, or the tributes in London.

There was a lullaby/wooden scowls moment during the 2007 PanAms OC that could somewhat inspire a tribute like this. Lullabies and scowls are used to protect from harm, nightmares and evil spirits of the waters, so... the producers just need to do adapt on those ideas and do the math, leaving the rest to the imagination.

I disagree to your pov, Victor, but totally agree to the solution yout presented to approach some historic facts, if they are willing to make any reference to. By the way, that is a very beautiful song. Actually,I used to sing that to my daughter.

Government will not pay new construction in Maracanã for the Games, if necessary

According to the Rio 2016, the opening ceremony of the project is not yet closed, so it is not known if there will be need to expand the tunnels. But according to columnist Lauro Jardim, the magazine's website See would require US $ 15 million for the work, which may end up being paid just by the Committee. Some temporary facilities required as four pillars placed outside the stadium that would hold 120 tons of sound and light equipment. In an interview with GloboEsporte.com in February this year, Rio 2016 ceremonies director, Leonardo Caetano, said the scenic facilities will have to fit the size of the access tunnels. The stadium underwent a reform of US $ 1 billion to the World Cup.

The photo used for that article is very mischievous- not only does it show an access tunnel partly blocked by a Guaravita advert hoarding, it also fails to show the larger access tunnel behind the north goal.

OK, I think I know now which tunnel they want to create and expand. I think they want one facing the Tribune of Honor stand so that the nations can enter 2 side-be-side a la Doha 2006 and the 2nd Doha Games;and Sochi -- except Rio wants a wider opening. So it's the one for the entry of the nations.

If I've understood the geography of the stadium correctly, that would definitely be "create" rather than "expand". I believe the Tribune of Honour stands directly above an entrance tunnel, with no equivalent on the opposite side !

Wait, it received $1 billion for renovations??? With that price they should have gone ahead and built a brand new stadium!

Maracanã was almost entirely rebuilt so, in a sense, is almost a brand new venue now if one compare it to the face lift the stadium got for the 2007 PanAms.

The Rio 2016 Organising Committee has opened applications for volunteers to take part in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Watched by an audience of billions around the world, the ceremonies will be one of the highlights of the Games and will include memorable moments such as the athletes’ parade, lighting of the Olympic cauldron and handover of the Olympic flag to the next host city – Tokyo 2020.

All the ceremonies will take place in Rio’s iconic Maracanã stadium, and the productions will be run by a selection of renowned Brazilian artists, including Fernando Meirelles, who directed the Oscar-nominated film, City of God.

“The Olympic Movement relies on the talents of volunteers as the backbone of these ceremonies which aim to represent the people and culture of the host nation,” said Rio 2016 Director of Ceremonies Leonardo Caetano. “Volunteers will not only be able to watch the performance, but also be a part of it. There’s no better place to watch the show than from centre stage.”

With 5,000 volunteers alone set to take part in the Opening Ceremony, there are a huge number of roles available. Applications are open to anyone who is aged 16 or over by 1 April 2016, and all nationalities are welcome, although a basic understanding of Portuguese is required.

Rio 2016 organisers have stressed that volunteers do not require any previous experience or special talents, just lots of energy and enthusiasm.

“We’re going to recruit people of all ages and backgrounds, with or without artistic experience,” said Rodrigo Raposo, volunteer coordinator for the company Cerimônias Cariocas 2016. “We’re looking for dancers, acrobats, skateboarders, roller-skaters, jugglers and graffiti artists. But most importantly, we are looking for enthusiasm, energy and a willingness to participate.”

Auditions will begin in November 2015 with rehearsals for successful applicants starting in April 2016.

Sad news guys, we will not have a big ceremony in Rio-2016. The government canceled all adaptation works of the stadium for lack of money and the director said that this should be one of the cheapest ceremony in last olympics, the cost will be 3x less than the ceremonies of London 2012 and 10x less than ceremonies of Beijing 2008. Here's the full article:

Maracanã will not work for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games
Budget will be more modest than the $ 127 million London 2012

The box emptied the state and the lack of arguments for a new work - after a renovation that cost R $ 1.2 billion to the public coffers for a "new" stadium for the World Cup - should make the Opening Ceremony the Olympic Games in 2016 in Maracanã, does not have the gigantism of previous editions. The plan, which frustrates some set designers involved in the operation, aims to solve an equation that has, on the one hand, the necessary glamor of a great television show, and on the other, the structural difficulties of making the party in an arena that was not designed to be an Olympic stadium.

For the opening show, which will be attended by over one billion viewers, as if desired enlargement of four of the five tunnels of the stadium or building a new one, with about 15 meters wide. But the 445 days to the opening, organizers and technical experts admit, privately, that the party should take place with no permanent work. On April 8, 2013, when the Maracana was in the works for the Confederations Cup a Rio-2016 document to then Secretary of Staff, Regis Fichtner, leaked. In that letter of 7 November 2012, the committee called for the extension of four tunnels in a meter wide and almost 3 meters high. Rumors of a work increased, despite the negative party.

To adapt the Maracanã, guys temporary interventions and large will be made mandatory to ensure the event an Olympic standard. But today, the promise is that such structures, especially to support the party of enlightenment, are paid with private money. According to sources present at a meeting between the government and the concessionaire that runs the stadium, the governor Luiz Fernando Bigfoot said "would no more real at the Maracana."

- The cost of a new reform for only four performances (Olympic and Paralympic opening and waxing) would not be justified. Brazil is not an Arab emirate. This is a principle that is used. The cost of opening the river, as far as I know, will be 10 times less than the cost of Beijing and a third of London (which was about US $ 127 million) - said the filmmaker Fernando Meirelles, one of three artistic directors of the ceremony. - It would be a delight burn money in thousands of technological tricks, but would not make sense. The world is no longer in an age where extravagance is desirable and makes sense. I think for the COI this change cost paradigms is good news. These ceremonies are getting so astronomically expensive that should already be difficult to find countries willing and able to host the Games.

The competition for work at Maracanã has the backdrop of access to the lawn, either for the parade of almost 12,000 athletes or the orderly flow of allegories. The main gate, used for incoming football players, is narrow. It is possible that the entry of athletes is made for more than a tunnel as an alternative to circumvent the absence of a running track, allowing the flow of thousands of athletes who will participate in the show. But the use of a suspended stage like material shift feature and people may make the use of grass for the Games football matches.

YAY FINALLY- Olympic ceremonies have got way too big and way too expensive. Sochi (although I loved them) had 4 ridiculously hugely expensive ceremonies. It had to come back to some sort of reality, and I am glad RIO is doing it.

For half the price of London, Rio should still be able to have amazing, passionate, colourful and meaningful ceremonies (especially as costs should be less in Brazil than the UK). Creativity does not need to be so expensive.

 Do you really think those reports, so crudely translated, are credible? Do you really think the very expressive and extrovert Brazilians are going to stage trimmed-down ceremonies, considering planning started like 4 years ago??? Boy, have I got a cascade in Iguazu Falls to sell you!! ;)

Agreed. Given that they are already recruiting for the ceremonies, months earlier than London did, we're likely to see some epic choreography, for a start- and the entrance tunnels problem can be overcome with ingenuity.

PS Looking at the original version of the article about the cost-cutting, I see that "party of enlightenment" is "iluminação da festa" (i.e. lighting of the celebration).

PPS: Gamesbids at teabreak feels weird.

In fact this article is very dramatic. When I finished reading it I thought the ceremonies would be worse than the Pan Am in 2007.

"The cost of opening ceremonies in Rio, as far as I know, will be 10 times less than the cost of Beijing and a third of London (which was about US $ 127 million) - said the filmmaker Fernando Meirelles ... "

Fernando Meireles is a very skillful guy with the words, it really speaks what people want to hear. Of course if he say that Brazil will spend 100 million on ceremonies (budget foreseen in 2013) is not the best thing to say at a time of economic crisis in Brazil.

And Odebrecht, the company would perform the works is one of the most corrupt and manipulative companies in the world. It is very likely that it is creating this climate of tension over the works in the Maracana in order to make more profit at the end of the works.

Boy, just wait till the Carnaval costume-designers get into the Olympic act -- it will be the costumes to end ALL theatrical costumes! As I told Danny elBrazil 4 years ago, the RIo 2016 ceremony planners and the samba schools have to be at it everyday. 24/7, stringing those beads, shaking their booties to make sure they jiggle right in front of the global cameras, practicing and perfecting their act UNTIL Opening Night!!

I betcha even the wild parrot schools in Brazil, and the llama-alpaca communities in Peru and Bolivia are getting excited to have their herds audition for parts in ANY of the Ceremonies!?!

Well, Fernando Meirelles said same thing Danny Boyle said about the London-2012 cerimonies.

"The "Slumdog Millionaire" director said it was impossible to do anything bigger than the show in Beijing, which stunned the world with its sheer scale.

"Beijing, in a way, was something that was great to follow," he said. "Up to Beijing you could look back and there's clearly an escalation. The shows get bigger and bigger and bigger, and you can't get bigger than Beijing." - Source.

"Boyle established a new paradigm in Olympic openings. I wonder here what Brazilians will learn from this for 2016. Who could be the national Boyle, someone able to identify the Brazilians who made the country be what it is? Rio me even to think about Jabor. If he received the order given to Boyle, it would, on the contrary, praise the 1% - starting probably by our partner, the journalist Roberto Marinho." - Source.

Is interessing see the word "paradigm" in the actual article and the article about the London cerimonies.

Don't use Boyle as the yardstick for great ceremonies-makers. He's only done one Ceremonies and it did NOT receive universal acclaim. THe Brits liked it, of course, because it was their show; just as Brazilians will probably find 2016 to be the "best" as Aussies thought 2000 was the "best, etc., etc. But Rio is in good hands because of the team overseeing Rio - Birch and Ballich.

Between them, they probably have at least 8 Olympic, Olympic-sized shows under their belt -- and their lieutenants will also be those have worked several Olympics. So I wouldn't worry about the calibre and credentials of the producers. It all depends on the creative vision that their local counterparts can offer; and whether the locals will listen to the int'l partners who will advise them on what works and what doesn't.

If Ceremonias Cariocas don't get the additional money to widen the tunnels...which really just means they want to move bigger props and move teams, performers in and out faster, they will probably just have to cut down on the # of performers per segment. So instead of using 1,000 performers for say, the Carnavale segment, and getting them all on the field and out in like 4 minutes. Maybe they'll cut down the performers to 800 or 750 so then can enter and clear the field for the next group in under 2 minutes. And that's the same for marching in the nations. But that's essentially what they want the additional refinements to the stadium's tunnels for -- quicker access and egress for the performers, props and athletes. And since the infield of Maracana is smaller than a T&F infield, the producers can adapt their revised logistics easily enough.

Also, the space around Maracana where to store the props and be the holding tanks for the performers and athletes, is a lot more confined than London and Sochi.
