Argentina’s Sergio Agüero to miss Swiss match with injury

The Argentina striker Sergio Agüero will miss the last-16 clash with Switzerland after suffering a muscle injury in his left leg and could be out of the World Cup should they progress.

Agüero’s injury in the 3-2 victory over Nigeria on Wednesday is a major blow to the South Americans’ campaign to capture a third World Cup, this time on the soil of their great rivals Brazil.

The team doctor, Daniel Martinez, told reporters the 26-year-old was undergoing magnetic resonance and other urgent treatments at the team’s camp in Belo Horizonte. “We have all the resources available to progress as quickly as possible,” he said. “He won’t be ready for the Switzerland game, and from there we’ll check his evolution day by day.”

Other sources close to the team said Agüero would almost certainly also be out for further games if Argentina progress.

First time in history that there won't be an Europe vs. Europe match in R16.

(or straight since 1986 - this because some World Cups didn't have Round of 16 phase)

Continents:

5 from South America, 3 from Concacaf (8 out of 10 from Americas qualified)

6 from Europe

2 from Africa (first time ever 2 teams qualify for R16)

What an World Cup!

World Cup Taking a Bite Out of Worker Productivity

American workplaces have been faced with a new dilemma as the World Cup heats up and the U.S. continues on in the tournament: What do you do with employees who want to get into the patriotic spirit and watch the matches?

Funny stuff. Americans are still getting used to World Cup.

Here in Brazil, when our national team is schedule to play, almost eveybody gets half-day-off from job, most of people got to work with green-yellow clothing and all my work's building is decorated with flags of Brazil, posters of players or even a huge World Cup schedule with scores in the wall of my department room...

That just seems like the worst possible bracket for Brazil. Having to potentially play two tough games against fellow South Americans is very daunting.

France-Nigeria and Germany-Algeria are the two easiest to pick. Should be a nice quarter-final.

Colombia-Uruguay and Costa Rica-Greece could go either way.

Belgium and Netherlands are favourites, but wouldn't be surprised if Mexico or USA won.

Now Brazil-Chile and Argentina-Switzerland are the interesting match-ups. If Argentina plays like it did against Nigeria, Bosnia and Iran. Switzerland could produce an upset. Chile has looked better than Brazil. Only losing to one of the best looking teams so far.

Really not worried here, unless for some Penalty Kick decisions...

Belgian PM offers Obama beer bet over World Cup clash

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo challenged U.S. President Barack Obama to a bet over Belgium's impending World Cup knock-out match against the United States, offering the prospect of some "great Belgian beers" should the U.S. team win.

On Thursday, Belgium beat South Korea 1-0 to top Group H, setting up a clash with the United States after Juergen Klinsmann's team pipped Portugal to second place in Group G on goal difference despite losing to Germany.

"Hey @BarackObama, I am betting some great Belgian beers that our @BelRedDevils will make it to the quarter final!" Di Rupo tweeted in the early hours of Friday.

As of Friday morning, the U.S. President had not replied to the challenge.

He may be well advised to abstain from such a bet, as Belgium are the bookies favourites going in to last 16 match on Tuesday.

Obama should also be warned that a large number of Belgian beers have a very high alcohol content. It was not clear precisely what beers Di Rupo was offering in the bet.

It is actually an easy bracket for Brazil, only European teams can stop Brazil.

My prediction:
