Like it apparently does to be the case with the Olympics on Bolivian TV, the World Cup at least for the one South American nation with not much of a World Cup pedigree, isn't shown much. Red Uno De Bolivia will only get involved with the Opening Ceremony followed by Brazil vs. Croatia beginning at 14:10 (2:10pm) Bolivia time and the game itself at 15:40 (3:40pm). After that, especially with the Bolivian team not in it again, making it 20 years since Marco Etcheverria and company made his name, interest wouldn't be as big on the FTA side, Red Uno will only show the semis, third place game, and the final live. Red Uno will show daily highlights shows Monday through Friday 23:30 (11:30pm), Saturdays at 22 (10pm), and Sundays at 23 (11pm).

Unitel Bolivia is doing exactly likewise in its World Cup programming with play-by-play and analysis coming from Ernesto Moreno Fermin Zabala, respectively, accompanied by guest coaches, was known in the network means straight from Santa Cruz, where Unitel is located. Meanwhile, ATB Radio is the Bolivian flagship radio carrier that will see 20 radio stations across the nation carrying its World Cup broadcasts:

Also like with Olympics, Japan has its own broadcasting consortium for World Cup with many of the same TV networks involved--NHK, Fuji TV, TBS, TV Asahi, TV Tokyo, and Nippon TV. Surely there bigger interest since A: Brazil and Japan are very close--Brazil has the largest Japanese community outside of Japan with many located in Sao Paolo B: Brazilian soccer players, like in the J-League, are treated like royalty and C: Japan's Blue Samaurai are a potential dark horse in Brazil. NHK has the bulk of the televised matches with half of them, including almost all of Japan's matches with the other half divided among the Japanese commercial TV networks. Fuji TV has the Brazil-Croatia opener and surely the Opening Ceremony, both live in Sao Paolo and ends its coverage with the third place game. NHK ends it all with the final. Reruns are shown at least for NHK BS1 and Nihon TV for 2 hours at evenings (mostly) and mornings. Following is the Japanese Brazil 2014 World Cup TV schedule:

Sheena Ringo sings NHK's official song for its 2014 World Cup-related programming down in Brazil:

Two professional teams from Honduras' TVC (Televicentro) were dispatched to Brazil including Honduras (La H Seleccion) sportscasting team of Salvador Nasralla and Juan Jose Romanga. Other members also include Copan Alvarez and Carlos Andino:

VTV3 and VTV6 will handle all 64 matches live each with pregame and postgame analysis. Deal was recently struck:

ZNBC and top African telecommunications company MTN struck a K450,000 deal for the latter to be a sponsor for ZNBC's World Cup coverage for all 64 matches live in Zambia on ZNBC-TV and TV 2:

Gama TV Ecuador certainly is more than ready for Brazil this summer

How Ecuadorian TV prepares itself for the World Cup...and it's not just the rights holders:

RTM Malaysia has been broadcasting the World Cup since 1974. And it's going to show more matches on FTA Malaysian TV than ever before: 35 matches (24 live and 11 delayed, all in HD on TV1, TV2, and TVi). It aims for at 3 million Malaysian viewers per game now with KTMB as a sponsor. Many of them will be during the late night/early morning hours:

RTM's TV1, TV2, and TVi 2014 FIFA World Cup TV schedule:

http://www.rtm.gov.my/component/content/article?layout=edit&id=1543

But Malaysians cannot watch the RTM World Cup telecasts online. The RTM broadcast deal only involves for them on the terrestrial TV side. ASTRO owns the Malaysian online/mobile realm:

Sorry Singaporeans, wanted to get RTM's coverage like from StarHub and SingTel? In the words of Mike Singletary, Can't do it. It's blocked.

Noticing the animated Google World Cup doodles lately? Today, the late, beloved Paul the Octopus from the Berlin Zoo is paid tribute as he tries to select the teams from above in the sky to win each of today's games.

Intro or promo with this for the Australia vs. Chile NOS Nederland 1 televised match Friday and all the clapping? You decide.

New York City soccer fans packed out pubs from Battery Park City to Washington Heights, and everywhere in between, for the United States' Group G opener against Ghana yesterday, and the ratings numbers prove it. Sports Business Journal media reporter John Ourand Tweeted the results early this morning, and apparently New Yorkers are more inclined to tune in to the U.S. national team than they are the Jets and the Giants.

Considering how diverse the population of NYC, not surprising at all.

It's a little surprising only in that Monday happy hour isn't exactly prime TV viewing. Worth pointing out though that's a combined number across 2 networks for the World Cup.

That said.. very impressive indeed. Wonder if there's anyone out there still trying to make the argument that Americans don't care about the World Cup.

ESPN reports the USA-Ghana game was the highest-rated soccer match it ever televised. Sure a lot of this has to do with the outright patriotism and nationalism as much as it as about the massive global appeal of the World Cup has, even in America. Once all this happens and seeing the USA succeeding--even the USWNT was watching live on TV against Ghana's Black Stars at a restaurant supporting the guys decked in those now-popular Bombsicle jerseys (for those who don't know it's apparently inspired by the bomb popsicles, hence the name)--it reignites the discussion about America maturing into a soccer nation with the sport getting traction into the mainstream sports scene with its increasingly multicultural and multiethnic population. I will say that casual fans here in this nation will get into it with the USA involved as long as it endures. If the USMNT is not deep into it, the casual fans will move onto the mainstream sports afterwards. Can see that being the case though I'm more hardcore. I would like to see them not just fully embrace, educate themselves, and be open minded on soccer but also other sports that many American don't grant attention to outside of the Olympics.

I think the World Cup can become a mainstream-ish sport every four years. I don't see the tranlating to much interest outside the World Cup. Same as many Olympic sports.

I think the World Cup has already become a mainstream event, certainly on par with the Olympics. Looking at the numbers and the news headlines for Monday's match, a lot of people took notice. Probably helped that the NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Final had just ended, not to mention the United States winning in fairly dramatic fashion. Now if it came to pass that the United States didn't qualify for the WC and/or they under-performed like in 1998 or 2006, then it would be a different story.

But yea, that said, this is little chance this does much of anything for the popularity of soccer outside of the World Cup. We've seen it several times before with hockey at the Olympics. Players come home, put on a different uniform, and it's like people instantly don't know who they are anymore. Now contrast that with the World Cup where most of these players won't be back into their league's seasons for a month after the World Cup and those on the United States team returning to MLS, is anyone going to care? Doubtful.

The United States is never (well, at least not for a long long time) going to be a soccer nation. We're a football nation (our football) first, then baseball and basketball, and everything else can get in line behind that. The best soccer can hope for here, at least in the foreseeable future, is to maybe be on the level with the NHL, and even that is a lot to ask for. It's one thing for the casual fan to get into the World Cup, like they do with the Olympics. It's another entirely for that to translate into the mainstream outside the one quadrennial event.

And 1 other thing to remember.. this is the last World Cup for now on ESPN. It moves over to Fox in 2018. That's not going to help its visibility. I'll be curious to compare and contrast when we get to 2018 what the ratings and overall scope of the World Cup will be. Also keep in mind that a lot of the numbers being reported for how many people watched Monday's game also include viewers on Univision, so it's not just ESPN that's driving this.

Horrible decision. Sports Center, all the ESPN raido shows, etc. have been giving the World Cup decent coverage since EPSN shows it. All that promotion drops to zero. Oh, wait, there's Fox Sport 1. Here's the face of FS1 talking World Cup.

You know FOX can import some of its soccer sportscasters from its sister British sports TV network in SKY Sports for the coverage and have the games obviously on FOX Sports 1 and 2--and get analysts who aren't under contract with ESPN, NBC Sports Network, and BeIN Sports by then for its coverage. And I really don't think Gus Johnson and whomever he's team up with in Moscow for Russia 2018 for the games like the final will call it from FOX Sports studios.

On a side note, I wonder how similar this all be with Canada and soccer if the Canadians finally qualify again for the World Cup for the first time since 1986 in Mexico--when the USA was still undergoing its international soccer dark ages (THAT would be a very intriguing ESPN 30 For 30 coupled with the rise and fall of the NASL). Still hoping for a return from them.

I wonder if FOX will air more matches on their primary network, and not just on the weekends like ABC is doing now...

Still too far ahead to announce but maybe it will; many FOX affiliates really like their syndication programming during the afternoon TV hours. If so, I think the USA games will be likely to do that. On the other hand by then, perhaps the American terrestrial TV structure will become more open for that. But I think many games will still be on FOX Sports 1-2, including the Opening Ceremony. A 2018 World Cup final simulcast both on FOX and FOX Sports 1 will happen, I think.

Thus far there seems to be even more buzz in the American media than in 2010. However I wonder how much of that is due to the performance of the new world teams.

North America: 3-1

South America: 5-2

Europe: 8-7

Africa: 1-3

Asia: 0-4

If the USA loses to Portugal and gets crushed by Germany, and if our Mexican friends don't advance, I wonder if apathy will set in again.
