Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup Coverage

Recommended Posts

Belatedly it's here. And more as a separate thread than it was when South Africa was hosting it.

With Norway to start things off, NRK and TV2, fresh off from its massive Sochi OL-2014 coverage, will share the FIFA World Cup coverage. TV2 will start the coverage showing the first game with Brazil vs. Croatia (and likely the Opening Ceremony) and up to the semifinals with NRK showing up to the 3rd place game and the Final Strange that both channels will also show the simultaneous final group games at the same time. Will Norwegian viewers be able to switch games on their TVs? TV2 Norge and NRK will air 32 games each. Sometimes, there will be doubleheaders from each on some days. Here's the Norwegian FIFA 2014 World Cup TV schedule:

http://www.vg.no/sport/fotball/fotball-vm-2014/slik-vises-fotball-vm-paa-tv-2-og-nrk/a/10137667/

SporTV in hosts Brazil, a nation we all know that loves soccer to the bone and eats, sleeps, thinks, and speaks it as part of its national identity and its global soft power, will have 56 games live on SporTV with the remaining 8 on SporTV 2, very likely the same-time final group games. This is how SporTV tackles the nothing but 24-hours of World Cup coverage, talk, promotion, interactivity, and analysis from June to July spreading itself not just inside Brazil but in several other nations, when the entire nation ultimately hopes to lift the trophy!

Yeah, SporTV's pulling out all the stops for its massive coverage to a nation that massively supports soccer. Just imagine what'll be like two years from now with the Olympics coming up!

The same people behind Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run, and Swept Away are also behind the new BBC FIFA World Cup 2014 promo! From Aardman Films, a group of excited soccer flick figurines out of the toy box, realizing the World Cup is in Brazil, managed to leave a London neighborhood and make the BBC's headquarters in Salford with the team ready to go to Brazil and ultimately Rio's iconic Maracana Stadium with some hijinks along the way. One of the figures is supposed to be Gary Lineker with another Gordon Banks. Maybe the others are supposed to be Chris and Paulo.

In France, TF1 is the official broadcaster, airing the 28 most interesting games (including the opening game, all games with the national team, half the 1/8th of finals, half the 1/4 finals, both semifinals, the bronze medal game, and the big final)

Here are two promos they've been airing these past weeks:

Teaser #1:

Teaser #2: http://medias.lenodal.com/video.php?id=15807

Pay-tv group Bein Sports is licensed broadcaster, offering 24/7 coverage of the World Cup on Bein Sports 1, with every game live, a daily breakfast show, and coverage of training sessions and press conferences every afternoon.

Promo:

And a terrible 24 parody to present the coverage:

A little odd that TF1 didn't get a FTA partner in helping to show all of the World Cup games in Brazil and just only show 28. France's games are to be expected along with the opening Brazil-Croatia, the bronze game and final. Couldn't get into an arrangement with France TV? Thank godness for BeIN Sports on the pay-TV side.

This will be the final World Cup that the CBC and Rogers Sportsnet will be involved in on the Canadian portion of broadcasting. Ditto for TVA Sports on the French language side. Starting in 2018 when it comes to Russia, CTV, TSN, and RDS will hold the Canadian FIFA 2014 World Cup media rights. Right now, there's no promos from the first three but will come very soon. With Rogers Sportsnet showing some games, I'm thinking on many of those days the Toronto Blue Jays games will be assigned over to Sportsnet ONE, if it doesn't conflict with World Cup games scheduled.

Speaking of final, ESPN will broadcast its last English-language World Cup this year in Brazil with FOX Sports taking over (with Gus Johnson being the anchor sportscaster there) in Russia four years from now.

New Indian sports channel (since 2012) Sony Six will broadcast the World Cup. This is one of its promos

More like a quickie bumper with everybody on the TVB HK staff excited about the World Cup

Apparently the other FTA channels that could have been interested (FranceTélévisions and M6) didn't want to spend that much money (Bein allegedly paid €50 millions), especially since France TV Sport's budget has been cut and they signed a new contract for the French Open around the same time.

Manchester United icon, the recently retired and well-decorated Ryan Giggs, joins SuperSport's staff of analysts and reporters as a studio analyst for the sub-Sharan African pay-TV coverage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil

Not a promo for any of the Argentinian networks/channels but a very nice and poignant one from Coca-Cola "Argentina Is My Life". But here's a couple of promos from there. To start off with, this one from TyC Sports saying how that "The World Cup is For Everyone"

One of Canal 7 TV Publica Argentina's promos with its team of soccer experts and anchors bound for Brazil lining up like a soccer team at the national anthem singing to that energetic Argentinian national anthem. Really nice and fun!

SBS' Les Murray and Craig "Fozzie" Foster lead the Australian 2014 FIFA World Cup coverage from Rio for SBS serves as the exclusive Australian media rights holder in TV, radio, online, and mobile--like an exclusive radio channel specific for the World Cup. SBS will show all the games from Brazil from start to finish, not just of course the Socceroos group games, mostly on SBS One and SBS HD with the concurrent final group games on SBS 2, the home of The FIFA World Cup Show. Even the newer SBS sister network NITV is getting involved with it in a limited capacity.

Additional SBS World Cup coverage details can be found here with news of analysts, reporters, sportscasters, and further World Cup-related programming like docs, general World Cup news, and not unexpectedly daily Socceroos news:

A$25 million possibly forthcoming for SBS' sponsor ad sales for its coverage:

ORF's soccer sportcasting team gets to call the action in Brazil for Austria. Its team of play-by-play men, reporters, and analysts literally call from a soccer team's bench in an empty Vienna Ernst-Happel Stadium when the primary ORF WM-2014 studio team including former Austrian national team player and coach Herbert Prohaska shows up in this promo. Its World Cup coverage comes on ORF1:

The Canadian World Cup 2014 TV listings on CBC and Rogers Sportsnet--the English portion. CBC will handle the live stuff including the pre- and post-game shows and the games with Rogers Sportsnet reairings, save for the Game of the Day on CBC late at night. Much of what Rogers Sportnet will show comes in the morning with no issues of interferring and spillover on Toronto Blue Jays games (Go Jays!). I'm also thinking for the concurrent final group games, CBC and Rogers Sportsnet will split the games:
