Team USA
It was announced today the 2016 Copa America Cup will be held in the United States! It will be during Euro 2016. This possibly could lead to a single Super American Soccer Confederation combining North and South America. What are your Thoughts
gotosy
additional info The Centennial Cup America will be held in cities across the United States in the summer of 2016, kicking off on June 3 and culminating with the Final on Sunday, June 26. In the 16-team field, CONMEBOL’s ten Member Associations – Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela – will be joined by six competitors from CONCACAF, including host and 2013 Gold Cup champion United States, and six-time Gold Cup champion Mexico.Additional CONCACAF representatives will include the 2014 champion of the Caribbean Football Union -- victor in November’s Caribbean Cup -- and the champion of UNCAF, winner of the Central American Cup scheduled to be staged in the fall of 2014.The final two CONCACAF teams to earn a ticket to the Centennial Cup America 2016 will be determined by a four-team playoff. The four national teams advancing furthest in the 2015 edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup that are not the ones already qualified to the Centennial Cup America via the above mentioned criteria (Mexico, the United States, CFU winner and UNCAF winner), will dispute playoff matches to determine the final two CONCACAF qualifiers to the Centennial America Cup.The teams advancing to the playoff round will be seeded one through four according to their performance in the 2015 Gold Cup. The highest seed will then face the fourth seed, and the second seed will face the third seed in a playoff doubleheader, with the winners of each of those two matches advancing to the Centennial Cup America. The Centennial Cup America falls between the 2015 and 2017 editions of the biennial CONCACAF Gold Cup, which decides the regional champion of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. BTHarner
Unfortunate scheduling with this running almost concurrent with Euro 2016. People are saying you can watch the Euros during the day and the CAC at night. Well, some of us work for a living. They could have kicked this off the Friday before the Euro final and wrapped it up the weekend prior to the start of Rio.
reindeer
Not much new compared to Copa America where Mexico is a usual guest although often with a B-team. If this leads to a permanent change the only advantage 16 teams will offer is a better tournament format.

yoshi
The confederations really should merge - it's crazy having a whole confederation with only 10 teams in it, same principle as Oceania. Would also improve North American football, higher quality regular opposition. There should be 4 - UEFA, CAF, AFC with Oceania, & both Americas. reindeer
I would rather see the Asian federation split in two or at least somehow make two separate qualifying zones geographically. The distances can be huge like from Tehran to Sydney and I wouldn't want something similar in Americas. At the moment the Conmebol qualifiers are very straightforward and simple. Fox334
A bit annoyed at Canada getting the shaft as far as qualifying for this puppy is concerned, but oh well. Seriously, we had to be the only team in all of the Americas to only get one shot at it.
Faster
Well if Canada did manage to qualify it would have likely been a 3 and out, so not a big deal. I would rather see the Asian federation split in two or at least somehow make two separate qualifying zones geographically. The distances can be huge like from Tehran to Sydney and I wouldn't want something similar in Americas. At the moment the Conmebol qualifiers are very straightforward and simple. It could be worked around. Say a group was Canada, Jamaica, Colombia and Chile you could have one qualifying set of match days were Colombia and Chile hosted both Canada and Jamaica and than the next set of match days the same thing. Match Day 1 Canada at Colombia Jamaica at Chile Match Day 2 Canada at Chile Jamaica at Colombia Match Day 3 Canada at Jamaica Chile at Colombia Match Day 4 Jamaica at Canada Colombia at Chile Match Day 5 Chile at Canada Colombia at Jamaica Match Day 6 Colombia at Canada Chile at Jamaica. Means only one trip north and one trip south.
gotosy
Centennial Cup America Logo Unveiled MIAMI, FL (Tuesday, May 13, 2014) - The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) unveiled today the logo for the historic Centennial Cup America, to be played in the United States in the summer of 2016. ... The artwork for the newly launched logo represents the extensive American continent the tournament will bring together, as well as the two Confederations cooperating to stage this monumental sporting occasion. A soccer ball at the center of the design forms the heart of the logo, emblematic of the game at the focal point of this sporting and cultural event. Three distinct shapes coalescing around that central point are meant to represent the fans and players of the game, in addition to the multiple American cultures to be united through sport in the United States in two years’ time. The design, created by England-based firm The Works, Ltd., is rounded out by a modern interpretation of the historic Copa America trophy, reflecting a full century of heritage of an event which now looks ahead towards a new, bright frontier. Completing the logo are two enclosing rings representing the historic cooperation of the two Confederations: blue for CONCACAF and green for CONMEBOL. Finally, the Centenario USA moniker – inscribed in a specially-created font underneath the golden Copa America name -- is accented by a definitive color flash adopted from the host nation’s flag. gotosy
2016 Centennial Copa America added to FIFA's international calendar, making top players available FIFA announced on Friday that its executive committee voted in favor of adding the tournament to its international calender. Th decision means that all clubs will be required to release players called up for the competition that runs from June 3-26 in the United States, allowing national teams to field their best squads. “With its addition to the FIFA Calendar, the historic Centennial Cup America in 2016 is now set to be the most important full national team tournament hosted in the Americas since this year’s FIFA World Cup,” said CONCACAF president Jeffrey Webb in a statement. “We want to thank FIFA, all Confederations and all others involved for their unconditional support in this process, making sure that this once in a lifetime celebration was treated with the respect that the players, football fans around the world and participating countries deserve.” Added CONMEBOL president Juan Angel Napout: “Knowing that Copa America is the oldest national team tournament in the history of football, it is an honor for us to have the event officially included in the international calendar and be able to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this event and the foundation of CONMEBOL." The tournament, which will mark the 100 year anniversary of the Copa America, will consist of 16 teams. The 10 nations from the South American region will be joined by the United States and Mexico, both automatic qualifiers, and 2014 Copa Centroamericana winners Costa Rica. The final three teams to partake in in the event will be determined in November's Caribbean Cup and next year's Gold Cup. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2014/09/26/2016-centennial-copa-america-added-fifas-international-calendar-making-top-p
baron-pierreIV
Copa America 2016 to be staged in the US. reindeer
Complete waste of time. I hope the South American teams send B-teams to this tournament. Can't even think what this causes to the 2015 Copa America winners' World Cup aspirations. By 2018 they may be playing a tournament for the fifth consecutive year, or even sixth if it's Brazil or Uruguay.

After all, the young ones will be going to the O's with only 3 of the over-23 players. So, if Europe has their Euros, why shouldn't the Americas have their own parallel tournament. You don't have to watch it ya know.
BTHarner
I would not like a recurring tournament with all CONMEBOL but only six CONCACAF teams. An eight team event with four from each confederation would be nice. A quick two week tournament every four years that is small enough to be hosted by a variety of nations. You don't have to watch it ya know. It seems artificial and runs the risk of being eclipsed by the Euros. Besides, the more international tournaments there are, the more they are devalued. This is ok maybe as a one-off event but I hope it won't become a recurring tournament every four years. The top players won't participate in an international tournament every year in order to avoid fatigue nor will the clubs accept it.

The cities are planning to submit a proposal to the Local Organizing Committee, U.S. Soccer, to host matches during the historic centennial edition of the South American championship. The 2016 edition of tournament, which will take place in June, will mark the first time this world class event has been staged outside of South America. "We are looking forward to taking the first step in the organization of this historic event that will unite the Americas and the world in 2016," said CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb. "The unique opportunities that we have with the Centennial Cup America, flanked by the 2015 and 2017 Gold Cups will help set the stage to demonstrate how our region is ready to welcome back another FIFA World Cup in 2026." "This historic event is the best way to honor our football founders,” said CONMEBOL President Juan Angel Napout. “It is also a unique opportunity to widen the football landscape across the three Americas and to that matter I would like to thank President Webb for his vision to embark in this joint CONMEBOL and CONCACAF project.” The deadline for venues to submit their proposal is March 16, 2015, and the winning cities will be announced in May. It is anticipated that between eight and 13 stadiums will be selected. A minimum seating capacity of 50,000 is required for tournament venues. cslopes54
I wonder if Boston (Gillette, Foxborough) will be heavily considered as a host city since it just became an Olympic Bid and would hold soccer matches. So lame Miami didn't make it.
baron-pierreIV
I wonder if Boston (Gillette, Foxborough) will be heavily considered as a host city since it just became an Olympic Bid and would hold soccer matches. So lame Miami didn't make it. It will be the same major metropolitan areas as always -- due to population, facilities, infrastructure, the lodgiing for the teams, airports, what those cities have offered in terms of security and perks -- and most important of all, the cities with active MLS teams because those operations will pretty much provide the foundation of the actual hands-on running of the tournament. And if anything, this again will probably the rehearsal for putting together the 2026 World Cup bid. baron-pierreIV
So frustrating to see Miami get passed up. Hopefully I will have moved away by 2016 anyways. Most probably Miami did NOT present a good enuf bid and because Cuba isn't a power in the tournament, then what support would other teams get there. Of course, geo-politics can change by next year...and non-Cuban fans can easily travel to Orlando to catch some games.

LatinXTC
Hahahahaha screw you Dallas!!! Houston got selected! But damn, Glendale/Phoenix as one of the host cities??? Sure the stadium is an indoor stadium, but the city still reaches over 100F degrees during June, with records going as high as over 120F. Well the good thing is the light rail is in the middle of an expansion and will have 3 stops in Glendale that will be opened by early of next year, one of those stops being near the stadium. I rode the light rail on there and I like it, although it could stand to pass by more frequently, and move a bit faster. Took forever to go from downtown PHX to Tempe.
