I know some forums even outright ban thread necromancy, but I don’t see it as a problem here. A lot of people enjoy going through old discussions and I think it’s even better sometimes to re-start an existing discussion, particularly on a broad subjects like “Looks”, than starting a whole new one on the same topic.

I do apologise if it seems I, and others, seem to be on your back all the time. To tell you the truth, I’m quite enjoying some of the discussions I’m having with you - it’s engaging to try to get my thoughts across and maybe educate you on some finer points on things like Looks. It’s made me a lot more interested to participate than I have been in a long time. It’s just some of your comments are a bit like a newbie bull blundering into the china shop, and you do tend to over-state the same opinions over and over again in odd places.

There are so many threads and sub-threads at gamesbid, a lot of them get lost in the shuffle. I just came upon your comment after this thread got pushed back by other ones. To me, it should be one of the threads always visible in the main list.

The subject of "Olympics" doesn't draw in many people and since this forum doesn't have a lot of active posters, I wish there were fewer threads. You apparently don't agree, but the subject of "Olympics" to me overlaps so many of these threads, that what can be posted in one of them makes sense in another one too. Or "Paris 2024" could easily have just one thread, "LA 2028" another one, "Brisbane 2032" another one, etc.

Since the so-called look of an Olympics is a major part of what I consider the 3 major goals of any operating committee: Budget, Attendance and Organization (transportation, housing, ceremonies and, of course, the design of a games' logo, venues, graphics, etc), this thread is one of the basic ones.

i read posts from several years ago and noticed some infighting towards the end. Sheesh, lol. When the topic of the "Look of the Games" causes almost as much anger or resentment as the subject of, say, religion or politics does, that shows various people taking things way too personally.

Back to the topic: I think one forumer said he liked the Olympic look of both London 2012 and LA 1984. Personally, I can't square the two.

All I'll say is that from the day the 2012 OOC presented its logo to the last day of the 2012 games, the tone of the 30th Olympiad never changed.

Talking points for that subject mean different things to different people.  Go over to Totallympics and it's all about sports over there.  And not just in the context of the Olympics.  Here, the word "Olympics" evokes more discussion of ceremonies and logos and other minutiae.  There's only so much there is to talk about and keep people engaged, particular where the bidding process isn't as involved and extensive as it used to be, which is what has traditionally led to much of the infighting on this site.

I'm glad there are threads like these floating around.  Not my cup of tea to focus on the look of the games, but if that keeps a few more people here active, that's a good thing.

That's why there weren't so many threads buried within other threads. Splintering the subject of "Olympics" to me is too much like a discussion on automobiles where the topic of each part of a car's engine, tires, upholstery, windshield, body paint, etc, has its own thread.

Yet, if you went to an automobile or mechanics enthusiast site, that would probably be exactly how they organise their threads.

This is a specialised site, and like all such sites digs down into specialised topics. If you want generalist, you should try something like Reddit.

That’s the purpose of discussion boards - to discuss and debate topics. And people discuss, compare and debate things they are passionate about.

Or maybe you’re referring to the posts around one particular poster. He was a poster that caused quite a lot of havoc and antagonism throughout the site by continued and extreme over-posting on his particular obsessions and quirks across multiple threads and forums. And despite plenty of people offering guidance and advice and serving out numerous suspensions, he never did seem to learn, or even want to learn, his lessons. Good thing that doesn’t happen often ;)

What Rols said.  I don't know of any car forums, but it sounds like that's probably exactly how it would be organized.  Especially if the members were interested in those topics.

You're right that "Olympics" is a pretty wide-ranging topic.  Some people might want to talk about sports.  Or the venues.  Or the ceremonies.  Or the look of the games.  And that's for each Olympics.  Is there topic drift?  Sure, but a lot of times, it's still making for interesting conversation.

Plus again, there's not a lot of Olympics to go around.  So there's a lot of downtime to try and fill with whatever discussion keeps the site active and interesting.  That's no easy task when there's so much focus on things like the look of the games.  So why not have a topic like this that consolidates it somewhat as opposed to having to look through each year's individual thread for that topic.
