Well, Halifax did bid for 2014 - they dropped out halfway through - political pressures about funding I seem to recall - but were serious up until they did, and were chosen as the official bidder from Canada by the Canadian Commonwealth Games Federation Edited December 14, 2016 by Sir Rols

Alexjc
England is now out of contention for 2026 (probably along with the rest of UK)...This opens the door to Asia hosting again.
yoshi
I wonder if Singapore will finally remember they're in the Commonwealth?
thatsnotmypuppy
I know we all love the idea of a Singapore CGs but there is just very little interest in hosting them. Smaller level Games (SEA Games, YOGs) appeal as the investment is minimal.
Alexjc
Now that Birmingham is confirmed 2022 host...We now have to consider a 2026 host which needs to be sorted out in 2019...Yes it has snuck up on us that quick. The only real contender is Malaysia and a half arsed hand raise from Canada. There really isn't anyone else interested.
intoronto
Canada is not going to bid for 2026. The position of CGA is they support an Olympic bid that year and would rather focus on the centenary games in 2030. Also the world cup will be in Canada in 2026 (most likely) so that would rule out 2-4 of the following cities: Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Montreal. yoshi
Laying the ground for Hamilton 2030 already hmm? Does sound like Malaysia & NZ are the real choices for 26...unless Singapore finally wake up & realise they're in the Commonwealth too. yoshi
Unsurprising, given the new stadium, plus even though it's still Australia, it'd feel like a different continent to GC. And being Australia, it'd be a great games - that's a given. Even so, 4 consecutive Games alternating between Britain & Oz isn't the look of a global event. It really is a shame Canada's ruled itself out.
JMarkSnow2012
As from 2016, we have a new possible hosting contender: Quote St Helena Airport was certified for operations by Air Safety Support International (ASSI) on 10th May 2016. This achievement was made all the more remarkable by the issuance of an aerodrome certificate at the first attempt. Following its construction, the Airport has opened-up rapid access to the rest of the world and has already proven itself following the successful completion of a number of medevac flights to take seriously ill patients to the African mainland to receive life-saving treatment. Commercial air services commenced on 14th October 2017 with a weekly flight connecting St Helena to South Africa, and a monthly flight connecting St Helena with Ascension Island. The Airport also accommodates frequent private and charter flights, as well as technical stops by aircraft using St Helena as a hop between South America and southern/western Africa. http://sthelenaairport.com

As you can see, they had to bridge a deep gully to get the length thanks to RESA requirements. The runway was going to be shorter. UK managed to find extra funds to extend it via MoD budget. It can now handle pax restricted B737-900/A320neo types.

yoshi
It is a little odd as you can normally rely on Australia to bid for any CG where they’re eligible (should be Adelaide next but I guess Perth goes first with the new stadium), & NZ have been quiet too. Do Canada still care about them or are they holding off for the centennial? And will Singapore ever remember that they’re in the Commonwealth? There is little media coverage of the Commonwealth Games in Canada. I haven't lived in Canada since I went to university in Vancouver over a decade ago, but I saw nothing about the commies in the Canadian news then and I can't imagine it's any better now. Of note, though, is that Sport Canada had a large amount of public money allocated for the 2026 winter games in Calgary that is now back in the pool for spending on something else. Edmonton isn't a sexy option but they recently did a $120 million upgrade of the Commonwealth Stadium, built a 18,000 seat arena for the NHL, and will need a small football stadium for their new Canadian Premier League team which should work for the rugby sevens venue. And they still have their aquatics center and velodrome from the 1978 games, which would only need to be renovated. It is the only Canadian city that makes sense as Montreal is a non-starter due to language issues.
