Maybe all of should do like a Habitat Humanity project and offer your services to help build a velodrome in Durban?? Then get credits for tickets to CWG 2022 or a future SOGs? How could Durban lose on such an offer??

If people are going to go to Durban for a Habitat for Humanity project, it will be to build homes for the homeless and needy and not something useless like a velodrome!

You're such a fucking tool.

Also, seeing as the Commies are not an Olympic sponsored event, couldn't they get away without the UCI?

We don't use that sentence here in England, whatever it means.

You just wasted a precious post on replying to that Tony...

Anyhooo

:) $80million would get you three international class velodromes...Outside the USA that is, no need to worry about all the payoffs to politicians, contractors, sub and sub sub contractors, union bosses, etc.

Also a Commies don't need the full International standard, and a regional standard would surfice. Could be upgraded for the big one in future.

There will be some very hard core negotiating going on to keep cycling in...and could include having the track program in London...A convenient place as it's same timezone more or less.

. No reason why the nation shouldn't have 1 world class facility.

Because sanitation and potable water for all is a higher priority??

Now we've found something Tony really is an expert on. I figure if Tony has never heard the phrase "You're a fucking tool" it must not exist in England.

But if it's only $25 million or so, then why would Durban balk at the cost? A first-class velodrome would I think, cost at least $45 million -- don't forget the land and all the design services, if it's done right. But the point is, the would-be host does not see fit to spend money on it. SO who are we to 2nd guess them?

Good point...

Did mention a solution, and that would be to host cycling in London?

Why would the durban committee agree for an event they do not want to be included and hosted in London? Makes zero sense. As I said before if UCI so badly want their precious cycling that no one here Will go to watch then incentivise us to include it. Simple

It's about time the federations and the IOC/FIFA pay for the facilities if indeed they want the sports so badly.

Uh oh...

Victoria considers being backup host for 2022 Commonwealth Games

Victoria Commonwealth Games — the sequel?

Victoria, host to the Commonwealth Games in 1994, is being asked to backstop Durban’s bid for the 2022 Games.

Durban, South Africa, is the only bidder for the 2022 Games. Victoria businessman David Black is suggesting the city consider throwing its hat in the ring as an alternative host should “if by some quirk of fate” Durban end up “unable or unwilling” to proceed.

Victoria Coun. Chris Coleman called the prospect a long shot. The idea is not to request to host the games but to offer to be a fallback host using existing facilities.

“We are saying if there is an issue, the region would be prepared to host that event with no form of capital escalation,” Coleman said.

In a letter to various officials including Victoria councillors, B.C. Minister of Community, Sport, and Cultural Development Coralee Oakes, federal Minister of State (sport) Bal Gosal, the University of Victoria, Camosun College and the Pacific Institute for Sports Excellence, Black said there are three principal reasons to host the Games:

  • A beneficial effect on Victoria’s and B.C.’s tourism industry.
  • A wonderful effect on morale. “Remember the celebration, the spirit, the pride and the new friendships developed during and after the Victoria 1994 Games. Remember the same emotions generated during Vancouver’s Expo and Olympics,” Black said.
  • And most important, he said, is the next generation. “The chance to participate in these worldwide Games and perhaps even win a medal will galvanize our young athletes. All sport in Canada benefits when we host major games,” the letter says.

Victoria councillors have asked for more information on costs and logistics before deciding whether to lend support.

Coleman said a major issue likely would be security. “The cost of security has profoundly changed from when we were doing it last time in 1994,” he said.

“I am reminded that in early 1994 there were even people locally who were suggesting that we couldn’t pull off the Commonwealth Games and that it should be given back to Auckland [New Zealand],” Coleman said.

He said there likely would be capital costs such as upgrading Centennial Stadium — but not for new facilities.

Coun. Ben Isitt said there are bound to be significant costs. “Sure, we already have the venues, but those will be 28-year-old venues. There’s going to have to be major upgrades to Saanich’s pool, the [university of Victoria] stadium in Saanich, the training track in Oak Bay, the velodrome in Colwood. … What is the enduring benefit in terms of recreational and sporting infrastructure for our residents?”

Victoria councillors have asked staff to report back on financial implications. Mayor Lisa Helps will consult with counterparts in neighbouring municipalities to check on the state of infrastructure and explore the practicality of putting in a formal expression of interest.

I think what the Victoria boster is saying they are offering up themselves if Durban decides not to follow through on the 2022 bid.

So basically they are too late to officially bid but are giving the CGF an option if no-one bids.

Or if Durban bails out even after signing the Host City contract -- like Hanoi did after initially committing to staging Asian Games 2019.

Rather mischievous and misleading line from the article.

In any case, I'm sure there are far better equipped cities in the Commonwealth that could be persuaded to host the Com Games in some form if Durban decided not to go through with bidding (and I don't see that happening).

Does lead the idea of what to do if a city topples over...like Denver did for instance.

To me it would be London to jury rig an event?

Boris Johnson was quite explicit in ruling out a bid not because we didn't have the facilities but because he believed the security costs were too high for the benefit's gained.

I'm not sure how that changes even with a "jury-rigged" event.

Anyway, Durban seems to be serious now. The CGF are in a mess if Durban changes its mind, but it has a solid candidate otherwise.

Seems that the pushing to get track cycling in continues.

Also from the comments it appears the city will need to redo the Rachel Finlayson pool at the beach because it is currently noted to not be deep enough for the event requirements, I am sure mostly to incorporate diving as it is not currently a pool that allows diving.

What is good to see is the way the CG committee and city are talking and working so collaboratively. It bodes well.

Pools need a certain depth for safety on the dive in at the beginning of the swim races, and for turns.
