mr.bernham 384
In a book former Chinese Olympic Committee President admitted that Beijing officials cut a deal with Rogge supporters during this race. According to him the deal essentially made Rogge President and got Beijing the games. He said that had this deal not gone through Toronto would have hosted and should have hosted 2008. While Rogge would have been President regardless of this deal, I believe that many of us could agree that Toronto had the better bid. Some here would say that these were Beijing's games to win, but based on this apparently they were not. I'm interested in hearing all of your 'expert' opinions and possibly information on this debacle/scandal.
Sir Rols 1902
I think that's a lot of bullsh!t. I'm certainly in the camp that thinks Beijing didn't need to cut any deals to win. It was their's to lose.
thatsnotmypuppy 559
Sounds like absolute rubbish. There was no way the IOC wasn't going back to Asia and there is no way they were saying no to China again. Toronto made the wrong choice. If the C.O.C. wanted a summer Games they should've passed on 2008, told Vancouver to hold back and put Toronto forward for 2012. The upside is Vancouver staged a stellar Games and Canada showed the world they could stage an amazing Games.
Olympian2004 511
Sounds like a load of bull to me as well. Beijing was the clear favourite in the 2008 race right from the start, even if Toronto undoubtedly had a good bid. But history proved that Beijing were highly successful Games, even if they were tinged with the political controversies and the simple fact that they took place in a totalitarian country. So I don't know why I should agree that Toronto had the better bid. Technically, the Beijing Games were excellent.

intoronto 650
He may be right but Beijing won be a landslide. Beijing would have still likely won had "this deal" never had happened
Tony E Loves Architecture 168
Even if there was a scandal (Which I believe there wasn't), what could possibly be done? 2008 is in the past.
mr.bernham 384
I have not made this up, this is straight from someone who worked on the Beijing bid. I would like to think it's not true and that Beijing won fair an square.
ofan 696
It's true Toronto's bid was technically better, but this really came down to the IOC being ready for an Olympics in the largest country on earth. It was China's turn, and it wasn't really close from the start. Both Toronto and Paris made a bad call, and look where that's gotten the two cities.

mr.bernham 384
Beijing bid was great, and this was their time. Yet the fact that then President who was involved with the bid said they cheated.
Durban Sandshark 155
Total garbage, I say. Agree with everyone else that 2008 was Beijing's to lose. China was becoming a global power, not just in sports and (still is) a very lucrative area to tap into that couldn't be ignored up to that point. After touching down in Australia, Asia was ready again. Toronto would've been great, but it's going to get some warmup multisports practice with next year's Pan Am Games to hopefully springboard into a another Olympic bid. We wouldn't have the great 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
reindeer 58
China is the largest country on earth? Even the US is bigger or did you mean in terms of population China is usually ranked third largest and the US at fourth place in terms of area although their margin of difference has been disputed.
