Rio 2016 Volunteers Programme to open for applications in one month

Have you dreamed of being part of the biggest sporting event on the planet? Well, now your chance is approaching… one month from today, on 28 August 2014, the application process for the Rio 2016 Volunteers Programme will open. This will fire the starting pistol for a process that will end with 70,000 people – from all over the world – being selected to help stage the first Olympic and Paralympic Games in South America.

Volunteers will perform more than 500 roles during the Games, such as interpreters, receptionists, drivers, assistants, reporters and medical professionals.

“The volunteers are indispensable for the success of the Games, they are the soul of the event,” said Flávia Fontes, head of the Rio 2016 Volunteers Programme. “A person in the city could go through the Games without seeing an athlete with their own eyes, but it would be impossible not to meet a volunteer. They play a part in everything, helping and providing information to spectators, assisting heads of state and providing operational support at the ceremonies.”

The first stage of the selection process will begin with online registration, which opens on 28 August, followed by aptitude testing and then, in 2015, interviews. The package of benefits that will be offered includes a language course, meals and local transport. Each volunteer will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the Games.

To take part, applicants must be at least 18 years old in May 2016, have completed basic education (middle/secondary school) and be available for the selection process and to work during the Games. Find out more about the Rio 2016 Volunteers Programme by clicking here.

From anyone who has volunteered before, what types of roles would be a available?

As mentioned in another post, I've worked eight years as a TV videojournalist (with a huge emphasis in sports). I've also kept a journal on three different Olympiads (2000, 2012, 2014), and will likely do the same for the YOG here in a couple of weeks.

Thanks!

Since I had time to kill at work today, I used it to fill out a reel consisting of past Olympic or Olympic-related stories that I've either written, edited or shot within recent years. There were some limitations since we're a Fox-affiliate instead of NBC.

The clip is about 5:10. I went ahead and finished it, in case if there was a place on the volunteer form asking for a potential link.

All of the national stories were written by me, and all of the local stories were shot by me. The discus-thrower pkg was the only one to not be edited by me.

The link didn't work.

Also I thought they payed for your accommodation. Wonder why I thought that.. Did London and Sochi give accommodation?

Also I think you might be able to Skype for the face to face interview.. pretty sure I read that when I was looking up volunteering for 2012. But might be different of i could be wrong.

Sorry about that!

Maybe, this will work:

Nice yeah I remember watching a youtube clip of Jay and Dan of Fox Sports Live getting their passes at Sochi and being informed they couldn't flim in the olympic park so instead they filmed outside the fence

Oh yeah!.. Again, if I worked for an-NBC affiliate, it'd be a whole different reel.

Something else is the restrictions. For instance, I never shoot sports wide and up-high (like with the Gymnastics) but due to time and space restrictions, that was the best I could do at the time.

Over 100,000 candidates for Rio 2016 Games’ Volunteer Programme

Over 100,000 people have already opted to take on the challenge of helping stage South America’s first ever Olympic and Paralympic Games. Launched just over a month ago, the Rio 2016 Volunteer Programme - designed to select the 70,000 volunteers to participate in the Games - had by this Thursday (2 October) received applications from 180 countries throughout the world. You can register anytime before 15 November by visiting the programme’s webpage.
“We are very happy that the response has been so positive. It is really good to see so many people wanting to play an active role in South America’s first Olympic and Paralympic Games, and share the thrill of this historic event,” said Henrique Gonzalez, the Rio 2016 Organising Committee’s Human Resources Director.
There are opportunities for many different candidate profiles, and applications continue to grow both in number and cultural diversity. Most of the candidates are women (58%), and competition among nations for the highest number of candidates is close.
After Brazil, Russia leads the race with 5.096 candidates inspired by the Sochi 2014 Winter Games. The leading medal-winners, China and the United States, are also in the race for a place on the volunteer podium. To date, there are 4.713 candidates from China and 4.231 from the United States.

I volunteered at Vancouver 2010: volunteer uniform distribution. But I also had a previous paid role at Vanoc in Workforce, so know the volunteer journey very well.

Not on here very often anymore. Feel free to email me: jawnbc gmail.
