munichfan Posted October 12, 2015 Report Posted October 12, 2015 I can't access the link. Is that really the final design, though? If you get the chance to build a venue especially for the ceremonies, why just take a normal stadium? They could have built something more theatre-like, perhaps roofed in order to support bigger props. Quote
Ikarus360 Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 First published `2018 Pyeongchang Olympics' opening ceremony Stadium http://hgc.bestiz.net/zboard/view.php?id=ghm2&page=8&sn1=&divpage=33&category=1&sn=off&ss=on&sc=off&select_arrange=headnum&desc=asc&no=207647 ◇ 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Plaza bird's eye view of the basic design that symbolizes the Olympic one days Dong-A Ilbo has obtained exclusive. Yiseonghyeon reporter The link i posted pretty much has the same content the Naver link had (and which many of us can't access). It seems its the real thing, and the temporary arena will also have LED screens through its exterior. The design seems very utilitarian and rustic though (kind of reminds me of Rice Eccles Stadium for SLC 2002 ceremonies). And i think elements of this design can still change depending of how the final plan for the shows come out Quote

Olympic Plaza, including the dog, I'm guessing that "gae" (개) should here be translated not as "dog" but as "unit" (in the sense of the structure standing within the Plaza). Quote

They'll likely make the field itself really nice and fit for the ceremonies and rely a lot less on huge stuff. I think Sochi gave us too high expectations for Pyeongchang, prop wise. Sochi had in general greater means (legitimate or not) to work with, so they could do whatever they wanted. I think these ceremonies will be a turn back to fiscal reality... or they might go all out and try to one up Tokyo or something who knows. Quote

A massive chunk of Sochi's budget went on the temporary roof (complete with computer-controlled railway lines) and the temporary hangers at the ends of the stadium. As Brazilians could probably testify from Carnival experience, "huge" can be relatively cheap with a little imagination. Skimping on the size of entrances would be awkward though. Quote
