world atlas
Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games Flame lit at Cape Dezhnev 26.02.2014 01:37 The Paralympic Torch Relay began today in the Far Eastern Federal District. The Flame of the Paralympic Games was lit for the first time ever at Cape Dezhneva – the easternmost point of the continent and the first part of Russia to greet the dawn. The Presenting Partners of the Paralympic Torch Relay are the Coca-Cola Company, OSAO "Ingosstrakh" and OAO "Russian Railways" and "VOLKSWAGEN Group Rus." The first spark of the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games was ignited as part of a special project of the Paralympic Torch Relay at Cape Dezhnev, a remote point on the Chukchi Peninsula. The Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games Flame was lit with the first rays of the rising sun over the Russian Federation during a projection show at 5:10 a.m. local time. The time in Moscow was 9:10 p.m., February 25. The first torchbearers in Chukotka were Andrei Gladkov, a 17-year-old athlete with a musculoskeletal disability, winner of the London Paralympic Games in swimming, winner of the Order "For Merits to the Fatherland" II class; and Valentina Etton, winner of numerous prizes, competitions and championships in Chukotka in northern decathlon and the daughter of a maritime hunter. They exchanged the Flame of the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games, thus kicking off the most unusual and innovative Torch Relay in the history of the Paralympics. A video of the lighting of the Flame at Cape Dezhneva will be made available later in a special dispatch. Also on February 26, the lighting of the Paralympic Flame will kick off the Relay in cities of Russia's Far Eastern Federal District: Vladivostok, Yakutsk, Magadan, Anadyr and Khabarovsk. Brekkie Boy
Nothing. Doubt I'll watch anything, even if it does get broadcasted here (which I doubt). ABC1 are airing the opening ceremony live (which is overnight) and 30 minute highlights at 10.30am and 6pm, which are also on iView from 6am. Not sure how that compares with previously but considering how there has been a real effort from the IPC to expand live hours in many countries around the world it is a bit underwhelming. runningrings
If London 2012 Paras is anything to go by, the quality of the commentary and coverage should be good. Just not enough quantity - but even the Winter Olympics themselves struggle in Australia, its only since 2002 that its become bigger, with gold medals and in the afterglow of Sydney 2000. ABC are good - wish they did the Olympics.

BTHarner
I'm looking forward to these Games and it looks like they are a lot easier to understand than the summer version as far as the disability categories (no T34s or 15 different 100m finals). I'm intrigued by the biathlon events for the visually impaired.
JMarkSnow2012
I'm looking forward to these Games and it looks like they are a lot easier to understand than the summer version as far as the disability categories (no T34s or 15 different 100m finals). I'm intrigued by the biathlon events for the visually impaired. I agree that the category system is a heck of a lot easier to manage, though there are, for example, several different Cross Country classes. I think, however, that it reflects a conscious avoidance of the sports which would need most categorisation (notably skating) which may change as the Paralympics become more accepted in terms of TV sporting entertainment. gotosy
Italian ice sledge hockey player first to test positive at Sochi 2014 ParalympicsMarch 8 - Italian ice sledge hockey player Igor Stella has been sent home from the Winter Paralympics in Sochi after testing positive for an anabolic steroid. In a statement the Italian Paralympic Association (CIP) claimed traces of the steroid clobetasol came from a cream used by Stella for the treatment of bedsores. The 32-year-old started using it a month prior to the Games, but did not notify the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). "He is suspended from the Games and in two days there will be proceedings against him where he can explain his reasons," said Italian sledge hockey spokesman Daniela Quargnali. "He didn't know that it was anabolic steroids in the cream - he got it in a hospital in Milan a month ago, they didn't tell him what it contained."The 32-year-old has been removed from the Italian Sochi 2014 squad and suspended pending the results of a test on a B-sample. ... http://www.insidethegames.biz/paralympics/winter-paralympics/2014/1018779-italian-ice-sledge-hockey-player-first-to-test-positive-at-sochi-2014-paralympics
