You know, Detroit has seen plenty of large-scale redevelopment projects attempting to rejuvenate the city. None of them have worked (largely because large-scale redevelopment projects tend to have problems of their own). Detroit is not lacking for housing stock. Its not lacking for stadiums and athletic facilities. Its not lacking for shiny prestige projects. Its lacking for people and economy.

Hosting the Olympics, in my opinion, would result in a month where Detroit would be a safe place to live and work, and then everything would be back to normal. The one advantage to Detroit is that there would be nobody to complain about where you decide to put any given Olympic facility.

It would be interesting if they took some of the beautiful abandoned buildings and restored and repurposed them, however. Could be a very unique aesthetic.

The Olympics rejuvinating a totally runned-down major city into something reminiscing it's former glory. But it's dire fiscal realities of today is what would make such a huge endeavor nearly impossible.

The even sadder thing is that no developers are interested in Detroit because it's so dangerous.

Detroit once had real hope of hosting an Olympic summer games but that was fifty or more years ago.  It has fallen on harder times than any other city in US history and it lost half of its population over forty years, but the worst may be over for Detroit.  There is hope for the Motor City.  But for Detroit to squander its precious resources on an Olympic games is ludicrous.  The city leaders must focus on the immediate needs of the city's residents.  An Olympic bid is pie in the sky.  That city is on life support but helpful change takes time and Detroit has that once last, the one with the dancing women who pretended to understand or refused to discuss the play.

Interesting. I've never seen that video clip before. Even back then, the plead of the President of the United States still wasn't enough to land an Olympics.

If there was ever a U.S. city to benefit from the big urban infrastructure projects that the Olympics can bring on, it's Detroit. But back then, Detroit was an up & coming city, the "Motor City". I have often wondered before if Detroit had hosted the 1968 Summer Olympics, would the city be any different today, or would it still have fallen into a state of despair decades later. The city is doing better nowadays, but still has quite a bit of work to do in order to bring it up to a level of other U.S. cities it's size.

Forgot Detroit's other main nick name at the time, "Motown" after the record label that was founded there decades ago. Between that & the U.S. automotive industry headquatered there, hence 'Motor City', Detroit was a happening place back then. IIRC, the proposed Detroit Olympic stadium, was suppose to be the biggest of any other Olympics up to that time.
