Winter Olympic sport in baseball stadium?

Recommended Posts

Perhaps this is a dumb question, but since it is very possible we will see a future bid from a city with a baseball team (IE a Japanese, Korean or American city) are there any winter sports events that could work in a baseball stadium? Hockey and skating can fit but the sight lines are horrible: the rink is too far away from the stands.

There's an annual biathlon event in one of Germany's largest soccer stadiums, but it's more like a sprint parcours, not the usual distances. If the Munich bid had gone ahead, perhaps it would have been an idea to hold the Cross-country sprint events in the Olympic stadium, though that was not part of the bid plan.

Ceremonies is an obvious one. You can use a stadium for cross country sprints (Sapporo 2007 did that), you *could* use it for hockey if you're willing to hold the tournament outside (not sure that the iihf would like that) or you could use it for medal ceremonies.

The sight lines in baseball are usually crappy for anything but baseball. But outdoor hockey could be fun. Unfortunately, the IOC isn't that fun.

If bandy every becomes an Olympic sport, I wonder if it could fit. Or some winter x-games import.

You can play hockey outside, its starting to be a popular trend in the NHL. Its probably not the ideal venue situation though. I guess they could work for bandy if that ever gets into the Winter Olympics, but if you need an association football sized area to play in then football stadiums are probably better suited and more common.
