eowym
This is the thread for Inverness 2026, my bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. Over the next few months I will be posting my plans and submitting my bid book. I do hope to show you all that Inverness in 2026 will be able to welcome the world and share the sporting achievements of the world's greatest winter sport athletes. I present you... Inverness 2026. Tony E Loves Architecture
Are you serious? If Glasgow lost it's Bid to host the 2018 Summer YOUTH Olympics, then what chance does Inverness have for the 2026 Winter Olympics? With all due respect. StefanMUC
Great idea! Nessie is the perfect mascot, Urquhart Castle as backdrop for cross country/biathlon, I can see a wonderful plan coming together. Will make Sochi look like a complete dump. Inverness? I hope you're not actually hoping to be taken seriously. If you want to do this for fun and for fantasy, go right ahead, but let's start with the fact that the NOC which Inverness belongs to just hosted an Olympics. They're not getting another one in 2026. Hello, I think you need to keep up with current events. Scotland will (hopefully) be independent soon, and Inverness would be a great boost from the Commonwealths in Glasgow in July. Inverness has the infastructure, money and the venues to host the Winter Olympics.
Faster
Canada just hosted in 2010 and if they bid for 2026 could easy win. Also Scotland doesn't have the mountains to host. The only ski resort I can find that is close to Inverness only has a vertical drop of 700m. A 100m short.

If Glasgow lost it's Bid to host the 2018 Summer YOUTH Olympics, then what chance does Inverness have for the 2026 Winter Olympics? With all due respect. I'm sorry, but Inverness has the winter venues that Glasgow simply can't seem to have. Great idea! Nessie is the perfect mascot, Urquhart Castle as backdrop for cross country/biathlon, I can see a wonderful plan coming together. Will make Sochi look like a complete dump. Thank you, nice to see someone seeing the compliments. With the Cairngorm Mountains and Aviemore just to the south, Scotland has just the perfect backdrop and facillities to host the Winter Olympics. Okay, so let's say that's all true (which I'm guessing it isn't, although if I'm wrong on that, feel free to disprove me)... Has Inverness or anyone in Scotland actually expressed any interest in hosting a Winter Olympics? Or is this just something you hope it you start talking about it will come to fruition in reality? The only ski resort I can find that is close to Inverness only has a vertical drop of 700m. A 100m short. The Cairngorm Mountains have the facilities to host most of the snow events. Has Inverness or anyone in Scotland actually expressed any interest in hosting a Winter Olympics? Or is this just something you hope it you start talking about it will come to fruition in reality? I do hope to start interest of hosting major events in Scotland, yes, and a lad posted a forum aiming for Aviemore to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, which recieved a lot of support, and just missed out on becoming a contender. Has Inverness or anyone in Scotland actually expressed any interest in hosting a Winter Olympics? Or is this just something you hope it you start talking about it will come to fruition in reality? Its true. Scotland is likely going to be independent (I believe the referendum is this year?) If they have a mountain (which they don't; so its dead before even starting) then I don't really see any serious detriments to them hosting. Thank you, nice to see someone seeing the compliments. The Cairngorm Mountains are fantastic mountains which are slightly smaller than average Winter Olympic ski mountains. Please name me the floors of Scotland hosting a Winter Olympics. How about anti-gay laws? Oh wait...

A lad posted on a forum.. and that means anything? Would that be this lad and this forum?.. http://www.gamesbids.com/forums/topic/10073-aviemore-2018/ So they received a lot of support from who.. other people in this forum? Whose opinions count for nothing in the eyes of the IOC? Just missed out on becoming a contender for what.. the GamesBids "let me present my city as an Olympic candidate so I can create a really cool logo" contest? I've said this before, I have no problem with folks here playing games and having contests like that. It's the fabric of these boards and a lot of fun for people. But let's draw a line between fantasy and reality and acknowledge which side of the line this one is on. If you can show me where actual people in Inverness are expressing (or have expressed) interest in hosting the Olympics, by all means please share. But don't tell us they're a contender for the 2026 Olympics just because you would like them to be. Its true. Scotland is likely going to be independent (I believe the referendum is this year?) If they have a mountain (which they don't; so its dead before even starting) then I don't really see any serious detriments to them hosting. Wait, what? They have a mountain?! STOP THE PRESSES! Scotland has a mountain! Yes, surely that single solitary fact makes them a candidate to host a Winter Olympics. No other detriments to speak of here. No sir.. not now that we know that they have a mountain. THAT, my friend, is sarcasm.

Tony E Loves Architecture
I hope as an Englishman, that Scotland decides to go independent. I want it to be 4 separate countries, and also, England is the powerhouse of the UK whether you like it or not.

intoronto
At Cairngorm Mountain, the total vertical drop is 1,837 feet, which is 361 feet higher than the average for all Ski Resorts. 1837 = 560 meters. Not good enough.

Can't do much worse than Sochi. So.. your first selling point for Inverness is that Sochi sucked and therefore your Scottish town with 1/5 the population and probably slightly less than $50 billion to spend could do better? You did tell us you hope to show us that Inverness would be able to welcome the world and then told us how another Scottish city "just missed out on being a contender" because of some forum posts. Again, if you want to continue this exercise for your own personal amusement, go right ahead. But since you're new here, I should warn you now.. be prepared to have your efforts pretty harshly criticized if they don't actually meet IOC standards. And for reference, an Olympics doesn't require a mountain 800 meters tall. It requires a mountain that can produce a downhill ski course with a vertical drop of at least 800 meters. They are more stable with us. But, I still want them independent. Like I said, I want England independent.

Not good enough. How about a twisty Downhill course? Scots are strong enough to stand up to angry Slovenians right? (Ben Macdui is 1309m elevation, not sure about vertical drop) So.. your first selling point for Inverness is that Sochi sucked and therefore your Scottish town with 1/5 the population and probably slightly less than $50 billion to spend could do better? Thanks for the tip. Russia is a homophobic country and therefore should never host an Olympic Games. Inverness is a beautiful city, Annecy had a bid to host the Winter Olympics recently, and Annecy does not have an airport nor a bigger population. eowym
I would like to say that Scotland has the Highlands, one of the most respected pieces of land in the world. No reason would suggest that it can't rock the world with a great Olympics.
