South Africa To Bid For 2024 Summer Olympics

I've explained this before, but Cape Town didn't win 2004 bcuz the "pull" of bringing the Olympics "back home" to Greece was stronger back then than bringing the Olympics to Africa. Not to mention that Rome was initially considered the favorite for those Games. Plus, South Aftica was a newly democratic nation back then. And even with those hurdles that the South Africans had to tackle, they still made it to the final vote & did quite well in it.

And while Rio did try twice before, they faced more compelling competition. Again, the pull of Olympics back in Greece was stronger than any other appeal at the time for 2004. And for 2012, the field was already so strong with the worlds greatest capitals already knocking on the IOC's door was enough to put Rio aside for another round. Plus, the IOC still didn't feel as confident with the Brazilians to deliver. That only happened once they hosted the 2007 Pan Ams, which gave the IOC the incentive to include them on the 2016 short-list, & well, the rest is history. Something that they're now seeing in South Africa (with all the international events that they've already hosted) & seeing that the next time they're more ready than they were back in 1997 when the 2004 took place.

Instead of basing things through merely black-&-white lenses, take the time to dissect & study all the intangibles & variables from previous races that go along with these geopolitical bidding circuses. Which sorry to say, mainly seems to come from the newbies here from the range of 15-25 y.o's.

You summed up perfectly what i was going to say.

I'm just a lurker, but I don't see why South Africa is this front runner just because they haven't hosted before. Cape Town bid in '04 but they didn't win automatically because they were in a new place, and same goes for Rio. They bid twice before they won, once in '04 and again in 2012, both times not becoming a candidate city. In my opinion, the location of a city in a nation or even a continent really shouldn't matter when it comes to it. The quality of the actual bid and all that other cheese that the IOC looks for in a bid should decide.

Most of the feeling here that South Africa would be hard to beat in the race is on the assumption that they'll be able to present a technically viable bid that is passed by the IOC and makes the short list. No reason to expect they shouldn't be able to do that, but if they don't, well, I'm sure most here would accept that and hope they go on to improve their plans to present in hoped-for future bids. Otherwise, all final contenders having met a technical benchmark, lots of other emotive factors come into play, and SA has some pretty powerful emotive appeal in that department if they can make it to that stage.

That said, It would be naive to think that a lot of discussion about social priorities and the responsibility of giving developing nations the games wouldn't be a major area of debate here and throughout the media and Olympic world if SA proceed. How smoothly and successfully Rio comes off in its preparations and in the end will probably feed into that as well.

In the current climate of scepticism about the cost and benefits of the games in many part of the world, if the IOC really want to give it to South Africa, they could spin it very nicely to their benefit IMO. If Bach can back his rhetoric with some concrete gestures and actions of "flexibility and new thinking" that shows some willingness to help the likes of a South Africa to host responsibly if not over-lavishly, it could be sold as them listening to people's concerns and prepared to act on them.

If I were leading the USOC, I would stay out of the race for 2024, but put in LA for a warm bid for 2028 to show that we still care, and then come out swinging for 2032.

2024 is likely to go to South Africa, unless they screw up big time.

A Euro city is odds on favorite for 2028 then, since it would have been 16 years since the last time a Euro city hosted.

Next best chance is USA or Canada for 2032.

Hold back, and hang tight USOC!!!!

Unamed US city, Paris, Unnamed South African City, Rome.

Jeez that would be one hell of a bidding race. An amazing result if South Africa got it and massive angst for the US and Paris not winning again.

The romantic in me wants it to be Paris 2024 but with South Africa in there, it would surely go to the wire.

I don't think it would be "amazing" at all. It would be the result of emotion and geopolitics, not the quality of the bid. In fact, I think it's downright predictable that SA would win.

I think both the US and France have so much at stake and so little stomach for another loss that they would be reticent to take on each other. Add such an obvious emotional favorite into the mix and it's pointless. Not worth the risk.

I didn't know the full extent, but I could talk, and because my parents are interested in the Olympics, I remember them looking up the Bidding Process, and I didn't know the details at the time, but I just said Beijing. It shouldn't really count as I didn't know the full details, like at the age of 3 or 4, I didn't know the political side etc. And no, you are not being trolled. I am 16. Not going into that subject again.

OH MY GOD. Most pathetic thing I have ever read. Definitely troll or one of the dumbest people i have ever come across.

Durban is there best bet. Cape Town for Commonwealth Games. Durban for Summer Olympics.

Why have a developing nation waste money on 2 different events in 2 different cities? I get the idea of using a Commonwealth Games to get experience for an Olympics, or even be the test event for the Olympics. Durban could easily bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, win and use such an event as an assurance that any Olympic development for 2024 will be done on time due to the previous event to be hosted.

Personally, I'd go for Rustenburg. Nothing says first African Olympics like Rustenburg! ;)

Hakuna-maStockholm. Too early to predict anything and you all know that. Learn your history, lest you repeat it.

I don't think so. I think this is a very calculated move for its timing. RSA has been sitting on it for what? 3 years now; and I believe they have crunched their numbers and assessed all factors to go full steam ahead. And if they are the only bidder...or they know they have it in the bag; then they don't have to spend the $50 mil or so that scared them off 3 years ago; so might as well intimidate everybody now. Why delay it?

They won't have 3 Non-European Summer Olympic Games in a row.

I heard these type of dead on arguments, but where? Oh yes, from the Madrid supporters last year:

The IOC NEVER choose a back-to-back Olympics (Summer-Winter) in Asia

It will be 8 years since London and the IOC needs to return to Europe

Come on, two consecutive Olympics in Asia? That won't happen in my lifetime

Just because it didn't happen before doesn't mean it won't happen. I repeat that again, the world in 2014 is far different to the 70s-80s world and we have more players in the game. This time is unique and different. In these type of situations there won't be rules

And please Tony, we know you're a Rome supporter, but please, at least pretend to be neutral in your arguments because taking Rome as a CLEAR EUROPEAN winner without any evidence of that, it's tiresome.

I've been into Sport and Computers since an early age. I started researching about Politics at the age of 6 or 7 believe it or not.

If you're research a lot of Politics, why do you make such poor and vicious arguments over these subjects?

Anyway, around these news, South Africa has the edge. While I think an European city -Paris, Rome- or USA can make a run for their money, I believe those contenders will sit down in this circle -Especially USA and Paris-. If that happens, Durban has a free way, like Seoul had in 1982. So at the end, the Dohas and Bakus can make the shortlist for the first time, just to make a "race" with a clear winner :P

Ain't been on here in awhile, but damn it looks like someone underage had too many drinks and puked all over the thread.

As I said a few weeks back, this doesn't surprise me. All the current technical work around Durban seems to be very focused on being ready when the call from government comes.

Over 10 new Olympic length pools going up around the city - with the backing of our ex swimmer and now princess of Monaco.

$5bn commited to citywide transit infrastructure over phases with the bulk complete in 2023...

Redevelopment plans to sink the railway lines next to the Moses Mabhida Stadium... Ie more space around it for development.

The city ruling that any expansion to the Suncoast Casino (on the beach a few hundred metres from the stadium) include a multipurpose indoor arena.

The new youth sporting academy within the sports precinct which will house a mix of facilities.

I won't get into all the non sporting related development to transform the city, you can Google if you want.

For me the crux is this is all happening regardless, as any forward looking city should be doing. Will it win us the event? No. But its better than just showing pretty plans. For me I don't care if its 2024 or 2028, but should come to us around then, I can't see the IOC sitting around forever. Mist of us know that.

I have a tough time believing that he started studying politics at the age of 6 considering how little knowledge he has of anything at 16. I'm also convinced that Tony has money on Rome or something. Idk why he's so obsessed over them winning.

Moving on, if South Africa is in a position where they are incapable of wasting away billions like Sochi did, Durban makes the most sense. A Olympic Park complex is already mostly in place, and several universities in the city that could benefit from state of the art sports complexes.

I'm going to ignore that first sentence. Also, I don't have money on Rome, I just feel it is their time to Host.

OH MY GOD. Most pathetic thing I have ever read. Definitely troll or one of the dumbest people i have ever come across.

I'm not a troll or dumb. Not saying anymore off topic now.

Also, Geopolitics will be a huge factor for the 2028 race.

I'm gonna make the staement again.

It would be an amazing race.

2 old school hosts with a number of failed bids behind them vs the new kid on the block. Actually it wouldn't be an amazing race it would be an AMMMMMAAAAAAAZZZZZIIIIINNNNNG Race

Now that the principal defender of Rome bid resigns as PM -Enrico Letta- and potentially the oppositors of the previous 2020 bids came to the government, I wonder if Tony is still predicting that Rome WILL win at any cost.

Like I said in the other thread, I won't be naive about the situation, and I was wrong in saying Rome WILL win. I should of said they COULD win. Also, I admit, this creates a higher risk of Rome not Bidding, but IF they Bid, I stick by my view that they COULD win.

Tony, you change your views more often than Bill Clinton does - "no. I did not have sexual relations with that woman. Oh, wait..".

I haven't exactly changed my views, I still believe Rome COULD win if they Bid, but with this new piece of information, it looks unlikely Rome will Bid now. Like I said, I worded things wrong with WOULD instead of COULD. I'm taking some responsibility here and trying to clean my reputation, as it will take some time.

I misunderstood you to say that Durban's victory over such a high-powered field would be amazing.

The race would be interesting even if it's conclusion is predictable.

The race will surely come down to Geopolitics.
