i like that ed guy who does the xtreme snow commentary. he's such an idiot but he makes me laugh. we never get people like that in the states who go off script to make a slighly off color, funny joke. i'm starting to look forward to his events. (could this be the crush that gets me over javier?!)

Consolidated BARB ratings (i.e. including iPlayer catch-up) for the BBC TV coverage of the first few days of Sochi 2014 are now in, among the general stats for the week 3-9 February.

The Opening Ceremony was BBC2's 11th most popular programme of the week, with 2.38 million viewers (which, a little unusually, is actually down from the initial overnight estimate), just beating the Sunday afternoon coverage (2.26 mil.). Saturday early evening was at number 7 (2.74 mil.); the Sunday evening summary at 6 (2.74 mil. and a tiny bit); Saturday evening summary at 5 (2.8 mil.) and Sunday early evening at 3 (3.08 mil.). The momentous Saturday morning coverage (8am onward) was at 27, with 1.72 million viewers.

[uK viewers may well have anticipated that BBC2's top two shows of the week were Dragons' Den (3.12 mil.) and the mighty Top Gear (6.97 mil.) on Sunday evening.] Alan Davies' Après-Ski did not make the BBC2 top 30; overnight ratings had put it at 1 million, which seems to place it well behind the consolidated rating for Channel 4's number 10 show of the week, The Last Leg with Adam Hills, which had 1.5 million in the same Friday 10pm timeslot.

Overall weekly viewing stats (3-9 Feb vs 27 Jan-2 Feb):
BBC2 average daily reach 16,112,000 viewers (27.5% of UK population over 4); UP from previous week 13,720,000 (23.5%)

BBC Red Button (main) average daily reach 919,000 viewers (1.6% of pop.); UP from previous week 474,000 (0.8%)

BBC Red Button (Olympic extra) average daily reach 372,000 viewers (given in chart as 1.1% of pop. but actually 0.6%); previous week 0

The first full week of UK consolidated TV ratings for Sochi is now in.

In the first week of Vancouver 2010, when there was basically a single block of programming starting in late afternoon UK time, the Olympics made the BBC2 Top 30 programmes every day except Thursday. Making an estimate of 1.7 million viewers for Thursday, we get a daily average of 2.35 million Olympic viewers from 15-21 February 2010.
For the week of 10-16 February 2014, all the nightly "Today at the Games" highlight shows made the BBC2 Top 30, with a daily average of 2.44 million viewers. In addition, nine blocks of the live coverage also made the Top 30, with audiences ranging up to 3.02 million on Sunday afternoon (no. 4 in the BBC2 chart).

In terms of overall audience, BBC2's daily reach for this week was up to 17,709,000 viewers (30.3% of the population); Red Button (main) up to 2,024,000 (3.5%); Red Button (Olympic) 1,062,000 (1.8%).
What makes comparisons with 2010 slightly difficult is that for Vancouver, web streaming was not a realistic option for most households. Instead, satellite viewers could access eight Red Button channels- which was fine for satelllite viewers, and no doubt boosted BSkyB subscriptions for that year, but was only available to a minority. None of the satellite streams in 2010 reached more than 430,000 viewers a day. The 2014 online streams are, unfortunately, outside BARB's statistical remit.
