Not too talky but just enough to help understanding. Plenty of chat through the parade but that is fine by me. Hazel has come on a lot since torino when I thought she wasn't that great. BBC2 seems to be spending the afternoon catching up on events which were live on Red Button this morning, despite there being other live events on right now. As one of the Red Button channels is needed for normal Saturday domestic sport, this leaves just one TV Sochi live feed. Brekkie Boy Posted February 8, 2014 Report Share Posted February 8, 2014 I think we do forget that for years we watched the Olympics without really knowing certain portions weren't actually live. I think the BBC did pretty well today - when you first look at the schedule and see things like them not starting till 8am and then taking a break for over three hours it looks a bit questionable, but there were big gaps in the schedule today so the decisions they made largely made sense, though they could have started earlier this afternoon to cover the speed skating live. Yep that's the usual way they do it, as brekkie says we've just got used to having the choice of live now!! As long as you don't mind not watching live bbc 2 will be the place to watch everything. Yesterday was just difficult because it was a Saturday and they had rugby and final score to show. It sounds like bbc2 are now on all day every day. Brekkie Boy Posted February 9, 2014 Report Share Posted February 9, 2014 Agree the online catch up is a step back - one of the things I loved about London was how you could just click into the schedule and watch what you missed in full if you desired. The website and connected app are quick to put up a few minutes of highlights of key moments, but would be nice to be easily able to access full sessions as well. Hazel Irvine and Clare Balding doing a great job as ever from what I've seen - but Jonathan Edwards is below par. The BBC have really suffered at the Winter Olympics from having a lack of a capable male host ever since Steve Rider left before the 2006 games, and it's very evident this year now Sue Barker has stepped down from presenting duties. The excitement from the commentators was contagious, and when all three of them started crying, I cried too. Also liked the moment when they caught Anna Gasser and her coach slipping - the BBC folks were hilarious. That was a great, light relief moment of the games. Brekkie Boy Posted February 9, 2014 Report Share Posted February 9, 2014 Ed Leigh has always been brilliant as the snowboard commentator for the BBC, and they've finally found someone to partner him with who matches his enthusiasm (in Vancouver they had some foreign snowboarder who was just awful and I think quickly dropped). Unlike others the BBC have got a tiny studio in Olympic Park but are barely using it. They seem to be mainly outside for the afternoon coverage and actually taking advantage of the close proximity of the venues by nipping in to them as the schedule dictates. Clare Balding also is attending events in the mountains for inclusion in the highlights, but so far I don't think she's featured on location in the live morning coverage. Curling starts tomorrow and that's the big test IMO. Britain has a keen interest and realistic medal chances in both events, but I think at three hours long and multiple group games it's an event best suited to live coverage on the red button with round ups or just joining live in the latter stages on the main show. Well worth the investment - loving them just strolling freely around the Olympic Park - it's working really well. Just wish they had a presence up in the mountains too like they did in Vancouver and Torino - Clare has attended a few events which have featured in the highlights (and did an interview live at the Slopestyle today), but largely the snow events are just being thrown to from the tiny studio in the mornings by Hazel Irvine.
