Thanks brekkie

Was really impressed with hazel and robin last night. Not too talky but just enough to help understanding. Plenty of chat through the parade but that is fine by me.

Hazel has come on a lot since torino when I thought she wasn't that great. She's had the practice and it shows. Better than Hugh IMO.

BBC event scheduling on broadcast TV is still rather random today. BBC2 seems to be spending the afternoon catching up on events which were live on Red Button this morning, despite there being other live events on right now. As one of the Red Button channels is needed for normal Saturday domestic sport, this leaves just one TV Sochi live feed. Maybe the BBC is trying to encourage more people to get smart TVs and watch broadband streams.

I think we do forget that for years we watched the Olympics without really knowing certain portions weren't actually live. I think the BBC did pretty well today - when you first look at the schedule and see things like them not starting till 8am and then taking a break for over three hours it looks a bit questionable, but there were big gaps in the schedule today so the decisions they made largely made sense, though they could have started earlier this afternoon to cover the speed skating live.

And nice that the Ski Sunday theme is getting an outing at the end of the highlights show for the funny moments of the day.

I think I'm starting to understand the BBC plan now- BBC2 is heavily (over?) curated, going live only for key sections, leaving routine live coverage for the Red Button and online streams.

Aimee Fuller may be out of the Slopestyle, but she's doing a pretty impressive job as a commentator on the finals.

Yep that's the usual way they do it, as brekkie says we've just got used to having the choice of live now!!

As long as you don't mind not watching live bbc 2 will be the place to watch everything. Yesterday was just difficult because it was a Saturday and they had rugby and final score to show. It sounds like bbc2 are now on all day every day.

Agree but I'm totally confused why there is so little focus on catchup if you want to go back and look. That was there big selling point of the 2012 games, this time its just live feeds and a little bit on iplayer.

If only it were that simple!

The iPlayer coverage from Day 1 is:

the main broadcast in 3 large chunks-

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03vktc2/Winter_Olympics_Sochi_2014_Day_1_Part_1/

Hazel Irvine introduces the action on day one of the Winter Olympics. Great Britain's Billy Morgan competes in the men's snowboard slopestyle. Plus women's cross country skiing.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03vl1sc/Winter_Olympics_Sochi_2014_Day_1_Part_2/

Jonathan Edwards presents live coverage from the first weekend of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Includes the men's 5,000m speed skating final and the first gold medal in biathlon.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03vl7r6/Winter_Olympics_Sochi_2014_Day_1_Part_3/

Includes action from the team figure skating, men's luge and women's moguls final.

plus the highlights in 3 medium-sized chunks:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03vq17s/Winter_Olympics_Sochi_2014_Highlights_Day_1_Womens_Moguls/

Highlights of the final stages of the women's moguls competition from Sochi.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03vq14v/Winter_Olympics_Sochi_2014_Highlights_Day_1_Mens_Slopestyle_Final/

A replay of the men's snowboarding slopestyle final from Sochi.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03wh612/Winter_Olympics_Sochi_2014_Highlights_Day_1_Ice_Hockey/

Highlights of today's best match (Switzerland v Canada women)

plus all sorts of little videos accessible from the main Sochi website page:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/winter-olympics/2014

... but, as far as I can see, there is indeed no catch-up for anything that never made it (either live or as replay) onto the main channel, except potentially on Red Button for a few hours from 7pm

The BBC have confirmed there is no catchup of red button or events covered live on the web

Should have said you need to read comment 22 for the bbc's response

Agree the online catch up is a step back - one of the things I loved about London was how you could just click into the schedule and watch what you missed in full if you desired. The website and connected app are quick to put up a few minutes of highlights of key moments, but would be nice to be easily able to access full sessions as well.

Hazel Irvine and Clare Balding doing a great job as ever from what I've seen - but Jonathan Edwards is below par. The BBC have really suffered at the Winter Olympics from having a lack of a capable male host ever since Steve Rider left before the 2006 games, and it's very evident this year now Sue Barker has stepped down from presenting duties.

BBC said on its press release that a total of 330 hours selected from the events would be available for replay on iPlayer. Does this still hold true?

Just such entertaining commentary from the three in the commentary box. Awesome job BBC

I watched the BBC coverage of Women's Snowboard Slopestyle (from Canada). The excitement from the commentators was contagious, and when all three of them started crying, I cried too. Also liked the moment when they caught Anna Gasser and her coach slipping - the BBC folks were hilarious.

That was a great, light relief moment of the games. Destined to feature in Games blooper reels around the world now till the end of he games.

Ed Leigh has always been brilliant as the snowboard commentator for the BBC, and they've finally found someone to partner him with who matches his enthusiasm (in Vancouver they had some foreign snowboarder who was just awful and I think quickly dropped).

Unlike others the BBC have got a tiny studio in Olympic Park but are barely using it. They seem to be mainly outside for the afternoon coverage and actually taking advantage of the close proximity of the venues by nipping in to them as the schedule dictates. Clare Balding also is attending events in the mountains for inclusion in the highlights, but so far I don't think she's featured on location in the live morning coverage.

Curling starts tomorrow and that's the big test IMO. Britain has a keen interest and realistic medal chances in both events, but I think at three hours long and multiple group games it's an event best suited to live coverage on the red button with round ups or just joining live in the latter stages on the main show.

Judging from the similarity of the Day 2 pattern to Day 1, I'd say the 330 hours is based on counting twice anything which is featured in its own highlight segment on iPlayer, and three times anything which also has a mini-highlight:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03vq77x/Winter_Olympics_Sochi_2014_Highlights_Day_2_Mens_Downhill/

Highlights of the men's Downhill from Sochi.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03vq7g5/Winter_Olympics_Sochi_2014_Highlights_Day_2_Womens_Snowboard_Slopestyle/

Highlights of the women's snowboarding slopestyle final from Sochi, featuring Great Britain's Jenny Jones..

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03wh8dx/Winter_Olympics_Sochi_2014_Highlights_Day_2_Ice_Hockey_Russia_v_Germany/

Highlights of Russia v Germany in the women's ice hockey on day two of Sochi 2014.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03vq77s/Winter_Olympics_Sochi_2014_Highlights_Day_2_Ski_Jumping/

Coverage of the final rounds of the men's normal hill ski jumping event.

That said, BBC2 is adopting a fine no-nonsense approach to the women's Slopestyle final- all live action, with Aimee Fuller still augmenting the commentary team.

Actually, there was a fair amount of nonsense, but it was nonsense which established the atmosphere of cameraderie, respect for excellence, and excitement.

Unofficial I believe. Well worth the investment - loving them just strolling freely around the Olympic Park - it's working really well.

Just wish they had a presence up in the mountains too like they did in Vancouver and Torino - Clare has attended a few events which have featured in the highlights (and did an interview live at the Slopestyle today), but largely the snow events are just being thrown to from the tiny studio in the mornings by Hazel Irvine.
