GamesBids' Sochi 2014 Opening Ceremony Live Chat

This is all over the web right now. The lady who lit the the cauldron is in hot water for posting a racist picture of the Obamas on twitter last year.

I wasn't impressed with Isinbeyeva also being one of the final torchbearers. One of the few negatives for me.

Also I think people are getting annoying with the whole ring fail. In fact the whole media war towards Sochi is getting annoying. I mean, yeah Putin is homophobic and the games were expensive but jeez a failure can happen any time. What about Vancouver and Sydney?

From skynews.com.au:

"Five stars on cables drifted together above the stadium, and four of them turned into Olympic rings - but the fifth did not unfurled and they all failed to erupt into white flames as planned, marring what's traditionally a key moment in the ceremony."

According to this story, the 5 rings were meant to ignite into white flames once they transformed from snow flakes

Not really, the Fisht Stadium as they have completed now is just PLAIN UGLY! It looks good in the renders and I understand why they couldn't have an open roof but surely the was a nicer way to cover the top and especially cover the ends. Especially with all the money they seem to have.

The opening was gorgeous. The ring malfunction was very sad. Such a beautiful idea. The men's choir was FABULOUS.

Just FYI, I'm watching NBC on the west coast now....

The projections on the floor look awesome. Live the maps for parade of nations.

HOORAY!!!

They abbreviated the route of the march!!!! Yeah!!! Each country only travels around half the stadium. LOVE IT.

It's called a "kokoshnik" and I'm sure the resemblance was intentional. Very cool.

So far so good! Really enjoying it. It was good to hear Canada and the US get good loud cheers when they came in, but Jamaica got a louder one. Way to go Jamaica! Cool Runnings II!

it's the homophobia solidarity connection.

Digging the kooky onion domes too.

The onion domes looked like giant condoms when they lifted in the air - to represent the giant stash of prophylactics in the athletes' village no doubt. ;):P:rolleyes:

So brilliant. Much more the caliber I expected from London. George Tsypin nailed it. Superb lighting design too.

Ok. The 50s and 60s are WAY idealized, which is annoying , but still brilliantly directed, designed and executed.

Every moment is visually magnificent.

An old thread, I think it might have been Annecy 2018, one of the "supporters" there made this silly remark against one of my comments. I just had to save it. Looks like through my modifying, I lost whoever made the quote.

Lol I remember nature making that comment. I could've told you that :P

Have now. Exasperating. Obviously Putin regards that period as Russian Utopia and wants to go back to it.

Actually, that was probably my favourite section. Didn't mind the fact that it celebrated some of the utopianism of what was probably the Soviet Union's golden age.
