Didn't mind the fact that it celebrated some of the utopianism of what was probably the Soviet Union's golden age. It was very well done. Just didn't like the implications. Black - ancient Russia Blue - Medieval Russia with those dancing domes Yellow (with grey) - Peter the Great and War and Peace Red - 60's Communist Russia Green - fall of Communism, Eastern Bloc, breakup of USSR and modern "green" Russia These being only prominent colours of course. And where was the orchestra? Baron notes how bad acoustics are in most stadiums, but surely they could have presented one, or faked it. Only have two things with the event I'm not over the moon about was that there were too many summer athletes in the flame relay and they should have built the cauldron closer to or adjacent to the stadium. A time machine would've been weird. Outdoor cauldron lighting must've been a downer in the stadium, but I guess they can see it when they leave. I think a *time machine* would have been clunky. I think the way the ceremony was introduced with the girl was done to perfection. I liked hearing Daft Punk's "The Game Has Changed" from TRON Legacy during the sports constellation segment. The only thing on the CBC broadcast that seemed odd, Ron McLean and Peter Mansbridge looked concerned and seemed to want to get out of there quick. Peter brought up a few times the number of empty seats in the stadium. It's too bad these games probably won't have the same level of street atmosphere as Vancouver did. The Sochi camera angles were 10x better than the London ones. London's cinematography was not that good. London only had good bits and pieces camera wise, while Sochi pretty much had great camera angles the whole time. The only thing about Sochi was that it was too much of the same thing when it came to props coming in. I wish their was more variety. Like more coming up from the floor and some from the ceiling. The empty seats were for the athletes but it was a band camera angle that gave the impression of a half empty stadium - until the seats were taken up after the athletes parade. The whole trip was another dream by (I think her name was) Lubya (i.e., Love). So, it started out with the floating islands, then the Coney Island-esque/circus St. Basil's sequence. For a while I thought the Natasha in the W&P ballet was little Lubya all grown-up...but I think that would've made a nice connection and still keep the narrative thread strong (but again...they didn't ask me on that point!!) And it's too bad it didn't close with Lubya's ending her dream w/ the final 5 rings!! The stadium's capacity is only 40,000 so it's on the smaller side. I thought about that. I think they only sold some 35,000. So, take out 1,100 for the working press area; set aside 3,000 for the athletes; take away another 500 for all the IOC, VIP and sponsors' comps; and say, another 80 for the camera placements. According to local reports the body of T. Borris Avdeyev was found his hotel room early this morning with multiple stab wounds. Avdeyev was a technical specialist responsible for the Olympic Ring spectacle, which embarrassingly malfunctioned last night. Five animatronic snowflakes were supposed to transform into Olympic Rings. The first four functioned properly but the fifth snowflake failed to change shape. Although his body was badly mangled and the wounds were consistent with a struggle, so far officials say they don't suspect foul play. “Sure there were stab wounds and bruises all over the body,” admits the lead investigator on the case, “But who knows what caused them. Maybe he tripped and fell on a set of knives. Right now we’re ruling this an accidental death. “It’s terrible when accidents like this happen. But then again, maybe Mr. Avdeyev should have thought twice before he screwed up the Olympics. Accidents tend to happen to people who betray Russia.” Despite the government’s story, fellow hotel guests reported hearing a struggle in Avdeyev’s room around 3am local time. “There was a very loud noise last night,” Canadian bobsled member Guy Lafleur, who was staying two hotel rooms down, “I called the front desk but the phone didn't work so I went to the room where the sound was coming from and saw three big men leave the room.
