Plushenko retires after Olympic withdrawal

SOCHI, Russia (AP) — Evgeni Plushenko retired from competitive figure skating Thursday just after he withdrew from the men's competition at the Sochi Olympics for medical reasons.

The 31-year-old Plushenko is the only modern-era figure skater to win medals in four Olympics. He helped Russia win the team gold over the weekend.

In warmups before the short program, he fell on a triple axel and said it felt "like a knife in my back." He skated toward his coaches while bent over, then tried to loosen up by skating around the Iceberg rink some more.

He then attempted another axel and botched it, shook his head and consulted with coach Alexei Mishin. When Plushenko's name was announced to the crowd seconds later — to loud applause — he skated to the event referee and withdrew.

Plushenko won Olympic gold in 2006 and 2014, and silver in 2002 and 2010.

His American counterpart is actually in contention for a Bronze medal. Who would have guessed that?

To be fair, like half the field is in contention for bronze :P

Men's Short Program is complete. Gold and Silver will be going to either Patrick Chan and Yuzuru Hanyu. They're just way ahead of the pack. 8 skaters are contending for Bronze.

Yeah, I just mentioned that. lol

I didn't watch, but I'm staring at the result in disbelief that our German champion is currently 5th! How did that happen...

I have no hope for him to maintain that position (or even doing better) though, would be a huge shock. But great so far!

Peter Liebers did a great job!!!

I can understand that the Russians are disappointed that Evgeni Plushenko is not able to participate in the men's competition (and that he had to withdraw from sports), but I think it is not fair to the other athletes to leave the venue....

Abbott sure likes crashing into the boards. Poor guy!

I have zero sympathy for him. This is EXACTLY what he ALWAYS delivers. Shocking success at nationals only to stink it up internationally. After his comments about the team competition I think he deserved to crash and burn in the singles competition. A truly lousy competitor. Wish he would just retire.

Jeremy Abbott is the least deserving bronze medallist I can think of.

Unless Daisuke & Javier perform really badly, the bronze battle is between the 2 of them. I hope Javier gets it. He's got more flair; more pizzazz than Daisuke.

Jason Brown has a new fan!

Wish he could medal somehow.

Well, he already has a bronze medal so there's always that.

His long program is really good, happy he is skating last because its a great way to end the competition.

Largely agree with this. Not a lot of time to post - work/life are crazy for me, but good news Athensfan... Jeremy has announced multiple times this is his last season. Let's hope he doesn't reconsider.

I rather hope he withdraws from Worlds and gives the spot to Jason. Unfortunately he'll probably go to take a hopeless last chance at redemption.
